Software News   Software News : Colem 1.0 ColecoVision Emulator on OS4Depot
   posted by BobW on 27-Aug-2005 16:57:10 (5808 reads)
An OS4 native port of Marat Fayzullin's ColEm Colecovision emulator has been uploaded to OS4Depot.

This version is based on the classic Amiga port by Paul Hill.

The OS4 version is currently being maintained by Bob Wicksall

This archive contains no game roms and please don't ask me where to get them from. I have original carts for all games shown in demo screen shots.

To run the emulator:

colem yourgame.rom

Very nice! Years before owning a Commodore 64, I owned a Colecovision as a kid. A great (IMO the best) games console for its time!

I uploaded a new version this morning with a couple of minor bug fixes. The new version now displays the Coleco "Turn Game Off" screen if no Cart is inserted.

Right now it's waiting in the uploads section of OS4Depot.

I've also made some progress on sound but I need to do a major rewrite of the code before I can release anything. The original UNIX source uses fork() in the sound code.

I was a pretty good Mouse Trap player (must have been 7 around the time), the cats didn't stand a chance. I told a friend at the time that the score would simply reset to "0" at a certain point. He couldn't believe I was this good. So, I showed him in one go.

Zaxxon was my favourite game. I liked the ColecoVision's version of Donkey Kong and Zaxxon much better than the c64 versions released respectively 1 and 2 years later.

I was 12 at the time and I spent many hours playing Mouse Trap, Looping, Pepper II and Donkey Kong Jr. I also had the super action controllers for Baseball and the steering wheel.

This was a great consol when it was released.

LOL, nostalgia. My nephew had one.

Also the ColecoVision's controller was quite interesting, with its removable 12 button membrane keypad which accepted overlays for certain games, including for Mouse Trap. WoofWoof

BTW, I also owned a Vectrex around the time, also a nice interesting system with its vector graphics, screen overlays (for color), first analog jostick, light pen, etc.

Brilliant! Now, only FMSX is missing! Oh well, there is still the Linux version.

@MikeB
I had one of those controllers. Though I don't know why, if it was only for the ColecoVision. I was an Atari kid. I think I still have it in the basement somewhere. The controller not the Atari. The Atari got sold and my parents bought us an Commodore 64.

@ BobW
Nice Job! Now if I only had something to run it on and some roms.

@mwoof

MSX is next on my list when I finish Colem. From what I understand the Coleco may be a stripped down MSX system or is very similar.

This may be a little while though

The cool part about the Coleco Vision and Atari 2600 games was you could swap them on both systems, making compatibility a non issue.

Man those were the days

I don't think you could play Coleco Vision games on the Atari 2600, but with a Atari 2600 converter you could indeed play Atari 2600 games on the Coleco Vision:

Time for some meditation...

No, you could swap games (I don't really remember the add-on module). The Atari 2600 was my first game console (as a kid) and I had various friends who owned either a Coleco Vision or an Atari 2600 and we swapped games all the time. I actually owned Donkey Kong, which had Coleco stamped right on the front of it as well as other games.

@ AmigaMac

The Coleco Vision was technically superior to the Atari 2600. So you swapped the Atari 2600 version developed by Coleco. Donkey Kong on the Coleco Vision was so much better.

Atari 2600 version (1982 by Coleco)

VS

Coleco Vision version (1982 by Coleco)

VS

Intellivision version (1982 by Coleco)

@MikeB

Here was the exact game (including the color of the cartridge, etc...) I owned...

Donkey Kong by Coleco

And YES, that is what it looked like.

Anyways, it doesn't matter now, I was a young kid and really the only game console I wish I had back was my TurboGrafix 16 with Turbo CD. That was the best game console during the 8-bit/16-bit era.

I had a ColecoVision as a kid.
It was way c00l back then!

My fave games were Ladybug and Cosmic Avenger! YEAH!!!!

After playing Ladybug on my ColecoVision I accidentally
found the actual arcade machine in a Chuckie Cheese Pizza Parlour!

The arcade game was just like the ColecoVision version!
I put my quarter in the machine and played for over an hour!
And I got the high score of course.

Ladybug RuLeZ 4eVeR!!!!!

It is, at least according to the the Amiga FMSX docs. Amiga FMSX incuded Coleco emulation!

Ah! Now there's an idea! Why not include the Coleco emulation in FMSX?? Maybe the original author of FMSX (Marat) could do this first!
