Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : New MorphOS release for Classic Amiga
posted by tokai on 23-Feb-2006 13:31:23 (6433 reads)
The MorphOS Development Team released a new free version of MorphOS 1.4.5 for Classic Amigas with a PowerUP/PPC card. Following the original press statement as it was posted on morphzone.org:

"The MorphOS Development Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of an updated MorphOS version for computers equipped with PowerUP accelerator cards. The included changes are as follows:

- Vastly improved graphics hardware compatability: MorphOS now includes 68K drivers for popular graphics cards such as the Cybervision64, Cybervision 64/3D and the Picasso IV.

- Problems on machines with more than 128MB of memory were fixed.

- hal.com1 was updated in order to allow proper support of CV3D.

- The RegTool (registration application) was updated as well.

- An experimental version of 4IDE support was added. (Please read the IDE splitter section in the "morphos.readme" text file.)

- The update also includes new Hungarian locale settings.

The MorphOS Free Edition for PowerUP can be downloaded from http://powerup.morphos-team.net. We suggest to carefully read the instructions on the website as well as in the included "readme" text to make the installation process as effortless as possible.

We hope you enjoy the update and would like to thank Csaba "Chip" Simon and Péter "Ratman" Földesi for supplying test hardware."

Nice to see some development still happening on the classic Amiga front. Hopefully these changes will finally get this working on my A4000 so I can test it properly.

Cool! I wish I had a 1200/PPC to try this out.

And excuse my ignorance, but is it free or is there a registration fee?

Thanks and much good luck to MorphOS,
Firbodi

It's only natural that the same/similar driver development team of BVision and Grex drivers would choose support for these devices in MorphOS. That's basically why Grex is included. The same people are behind all of these products.

Grex PCI busboard was direct competition to Mediator at one time. A poorly supported product that was superior in capabilities by far.

AGA was hot in 1989 but in 2006 lack of 16/32bit display modes and inexistant hardware acceleration renders it unsupportable.

Hehe, it would have been burning hot in 1989. AGA wasn't released until the A4000 in 1992.

I had one.

It was faster than the Mediator, but lost ground when Phase5 went bust.

Phase 5 had long been bust by the time DCE released the G-Rex. The G-Rex connected to the B-Vision slot on Blizzard PPC cards allowing DMA between PCI cards and your processors memory. This requirement is both the reason why it performed better and sold fewer than the Mediator.

@ROB

The GREX sold fewer becuase it was more limited than the Mediator. It was faster but was only good for a graphics card. Networking speeds was slower than the mediator. Sound options were poor compared to the mediator. Tv cards never work or worked well and NO USB card.

GREX 1200
Graphics card.
limited sound (better cards would not work because of a bug )
slow Ethernet
TV CARDS (only certain GREXs )
NO USB

Mediator 1200
Graphics Cards More choices than GREX
Big choice of better sound cards
Fast Ethernet More choices
TV Cards lots of choices
USB 2.0

I programmed a chip that allowed you to use ATX PSU's with the GREX since that was never supplied by DCE or Eyetech. Still have some.

GREX had promise but early GREX purchasers had to send back cards to DCE for updating some never returned. Bugs in the A1200 version were never fixed so was very limited in use.

Got a Full GREX 1200 suite for sale if anyone wants.
GREX A1200
Video Card
Sound card
Ethernet Card
CGV4
ATX PSU Chip
Complete set for $100

And you still wonder why the A1200 has sold so badly (compared to the A500) ? Or why C= went bust ?....
