Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Playstation 3 launch delayed 6 months
   posted by DaveyD on 15-Mar-2006 8:51:46 (5018 reads)
Japanese electronics group Sony has delayed the release of its Playstation 3 video game console.

Technical hitches related to the console's Blu-ray movie disc drive had forced the delay, Sony said.

Sony video games chief Ken Kutaragi said the group was still trying to finalise agreements on developing copy protection technology.

As a result the PS3's launch has been put back to November from its original Spring launch date.

The news came at a hastily-called press conference hours ahead of a Tokyo meeting where the firm is expected to unveil further details about the PS3.

Press rumours

Earlier, reports in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan's main financial daily newspaper, said the delay had been prompted by the fact that consumer electronics makers and film firms have been unable to reach a deal on developing copy protection technology.

PS3 users are expected to be able to download and view high quality video from the internet on the console, as well as play games.

Reports of the delay had triggered a 1.8% drop in Sony's shares to 5,470 yen ($46.56; £26.67) on the Tokyo market.

A problem with the launch of the console could be a major setback for the company which is struggling to revive the performance of its consumer electronics division.

In an effort to revive its fortunes the firm has undergone a major restructuring drive involving 10,000 job cuts and 11 factory closures.

Sony's performance in the $25bn games industry is set to be one of the key factors determining the success of the firm's turnaround this year.

Just got the press release from Egmont Denmark who handles all Sony Playstation in Denmark...

They confirm the delay but also says that the november 2006 launch will be worldwide. So Japan, North America and Europe will launch at the same date.

@Tonton_Pascal

It's MISC news...
...and i'm happy that ALL kind of tech news are (somewhat) covered at AW.net.
I don't have the time to dig through various news site (put away the fact that
on my Amiga-only machines most of the browser aren't capable of displaying those
sites correctly).

plus this is worth reading, because i believe many Amiga users are waiting for
this great console to play games (I won't ever get a PeeCee to do so)

Sad, sad... I hope they will finally find the market and it won't be late. I am really looking forward the Cell processor, this console is the best candidate for Cell to show its real power.

It was obvious this was gonna happen, whilst it's annoying for all those gagging to get hold of a PS3, at least it gives Sony time to ensure everything is perfect for the launch, rather than rushing.

@WOSPUPOS4

There's been discussions that the Cell CPU would be a great next gen platform for Amiga OS4. The release of the PS3 would give the masses a chance to get a look at what a system based on the Cell could really do. Who knows... maybe an awesome premier of the PS3 could influence the next generations of Amiga based systems. Still, others may say this is not a factor at all.

This news does not belong here. I want to read Amiga news. If I want to read this I go to slashdot or digg or some console news site. I think moderators should not allow such news to be posted.

Cheers

The November 2006 launch the PS3 will be worldwide. With a production of 6 millions units per month!
It will be delivered without HD, but for online gaming with video and chat and TV movie recording options a HD is required. LINUX is the TV software that will be available on these 60 Gb 2,5 HDs.

But there are also good news:
from March 2006 on PSP (Portable PS) will be available for 200 EUR.
In summer TV and GPS modules will be available too.

Wow, there are truly days you simply can't win.

Cell and even the PS3 are discussed as a possible/hopeful platform for OS4 by a good number of members, and it is indeed a PPC derived chip.

If you don't want to read news about what could potentially be a new OS4 platform at some future date, then don't click on the 'read more' link, simple as that.

@wegster,

Hmmm... What color should we give PS3 trolls ?

blue is for Peg/Mos
red for A1/AOS4
Black (or purple?) for Aros..

Green for PS3 ?
