Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Playstation 3 launch delayed 6 months
   posted by DaveyD on 15-Mar-2006 8:51:46 (5038 reads)
Japanese electronics group Sony has delayed the release of its Playstation 3 video game console.

Technical hitches related to the console's Blu-ray movie disc drive had forced the delay, Sony said.

Sony video games chief Ken Kutaragi said the group was still trying to finalise agreements on developing copy protection technology.

As a result the PS3's launch has been put back to November from its original Spring launch date.

The news came at a hastily-called press conference hours ahead of a Tokyo meeting where the firm is expected to unveil further details about the PS3.

Press rumours

Earlier, reports in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan's main financial daily newspaper, said the delay had been prompted by the fact that consumer electronics makers and film firms have been unable to reach a deal on developing copy protection technology.

PS3 users are expected to be able to download and view high quality video from the internet on the console, as well as play games.

Reports of the delay had triggered a 1.8% drop in Sony's shares to 5,470 yen ($46.56; £26.67) on the Tokyo market.

A problem with the launch of the console could be a major setback for the company which is struggling to revive the performance of its consumer electronics division.

In an effort to revive its fortunes the firm has undergone a major restructuring drive involving 10,000 job cuts and 11 factory closures.

Sony's performance in the $25bn games industry is set to be one of the key factors determining the success of the firm's turnaround this year.

Yay Wegster :)

Possible ... not likely unfortunately... For many in the gaming world, the original Playstation was seen as the sucessor to the A1200, and the diversity of the games resulted in that being accepted all the more. Two generations on we have a machine thats at the cutting edge even MORE so that the A500 was at a potentially similar price point... Hell the hardware architecture screams Amiga... all thats missing is the Amiga OS!

(for reference the Amiga comparison was used to describe the Amiga around sept 1995... Wipeout, GTA, etc etc all from Amiga developers who had to move on.. hell the original GTA was originally suppose to be an Amiga game... Sony ate up Amiga games companies in the form of Psygnosis and Millenium as they could no longer afford to support the AGA Amigas... It time for things to turn full circle and give the games industry a shot in the arm with a bedroom development platform with a mainstream teen userbase to develop talent for the industry in the old way to avoid the formulaic teaching that the current generation are relying on.

Ahem... I will get off my soapbox now..

I think the new IS relevant. If Hyperion and the powers that be see it as a possibility then that is an amazing opportunity. Just think of the millions of people who would get to use a real usable OS sitting down in front of their TV screens.

....lets just hope that there are some killer apps to deliver with the OS too. Lets face it; it doesn't matter how good the OS is if you can't do anything cool on it.

@Philips

Yes there will be a port of OS4 to the PS3. No doubt about it. Once the cell support has been added to the OS which IS on the way, it wont take long for some nutcase to get it running on the PS3... Wether it happens officially however is another thing entirely and I hope for the Amiga platforms sake that it does as its our last hope (and best hope for a long time) to get the Amiga OS and way of doing things back into the mainstream.

All it takes is a little imagination from Sony, and SCEE is made up of a lot of people from companies like Psygnosis. Plus I know people at SCEE were after A1s, when they were available.

A guy can hope...

Well, I'm interested in this kind of news. For both the Cell & the PS3.

I have no problem with this being on here as news. Besides, it IS in the Misc News section.

@SvenHarvey

I think the Playstation1 was more a sucessor to the CD32 then to the A1200.

Sony DID do the CD interface for the CD32 after all... not that Sony got too many ideas from that project *looks at the expansion bay at the back of his PS2 next to the one on the CD32...*

To be fair though, while the CD32 sort of got people used to the idea over here (along with the Mega CD, CDTV and CDi) of a CD based console, the mass migration of Amiga gamers was from the A500/1200 to the Playstation. Hell Amiga technologies didnt choose the right release date for the Magic Pack either... it launched in the UK the same day as the Playstation... Now which shall I choose... Pinball Mania or Wipeout....

(BTW I was working for EB at the time :) back in the days when I had Playstation games and Amiga games next to each other in my store :))

I wonder if you will have to stand this console vertically or upside down to get the machine to read these newfangled discs after three months of use lol. Frightening that this is first generation blue ray stuff too.

They must have gone back to the original plan with Japan first, North America second, and Europe a distant third...
