the program crashes an awful lot of time

you see, the issue is that myself i am unable to check every possible configuration, and the only places where i can learn about issues are hundreds of forums (if i am lucky, as in this case - i can tell bad things happen heh, but there had to be 60 posts so far, until the very one appeared - right?)

so, it crashes. ok. any chance you can guide me so i can get it crashing here on any of my machines..? now i know that fp / coffe has some os3.9 issues. that is so much for now, thus i am looking forward to picking up some os3.9 distribution to verify the issue (in fact i am downloading AmiKit, that features os3.9 as i write it). i discovered that there is a problem with one mcp patch when it comes to coffe (but i wouldnt have known that if i hadn't asked for something more specific about system config, or at least snoop dos log).

all i ask you guys to do is to write me a short email describing: what you observe, how to reproduce it (when it happens) and what patches you are using.

and here we split the users in two (three) groups:
- the ones that use the program and it works for them, they are making lots of contributions etc.,
- the others, for whom the program crashes, and don't tell a word on what is wrong (so i could assume that everything is fine, because almost nobody informs me), and
(- the very few that tell me there is something wrong).

so... i know you have a problem with fp... and that is all i can tell from what you have said.

ps. i am really looking forward to haring from you. any information about bugs that i could locate are priceless...

Well IMO FP is quite stable since OS4 update 4. Yes it's possible to make it crash.
I can even do it repeatedly with the same sequence of button pressing. I will try
to email you about this. But I thought you where working on a native OS4 version
so I didn't think rare bugs in FP 0.4 was really worth bugging you about.

Btw you removed the MP3 output module from the archive? Why?

What I really want though is some error messages when I press a button that
does "nothing", i.e. when I did something I shouldn't. Also a "Do you really want
to burn to the disc in drive ?" message. Not just start silently.

honestly every bug is worth fixing. maybe except for those from older releases . if you want a stable software (at least to some point) - i do really need your help. if a given issue is no longer to be considered - i will tell you about it.

since i moved the development to other platform, this module no longer compiles and makes really lots of trouble (basically due to unixish nature of lame). it was actually causing more failures than it was worth..

ok sounds like a good point. I will put it on my list of "todo"s

guys!

I will appreciate every constructive form of bug report (that is, anything that specifies three features of every bug):
- when do you observe it / what happens,
- how do you reproduce it,
- what are the other patches & apps running

if it is possible - Optical logs and snoopdos (in some cases) really do help :)

and - trust me or not - virtually any software can get rid of 80-90% of its problems in short time when you simply report these. it gives you some form of active participation in development (really!, and you can feel it when you get back updated version an hour later, doesn't it!) and a look on how the work progresses.

i admit it, i need to get my masters work done. but if i am to be honest.. i'd rather stay by fryingpan & coffe. way better than heuristic / genetic mechanisms that do not invent anything nor give any useful results...

you know my mail.. eventually you can always drop me a private message or get in touch on icq / jabber / whatever :)

Cheers!
Tom

Ok. I will try to collect together my problems/crashes with FP and email you about it.

Will you be making a new mp3 decoder?

uhm.. sorry my previous response concerned out_mp3 (thus 'lame', 'unixish nature', etc) haven't really noticed that in_mp3 is missing (!!). I will attach it as soon as i receive the french localisation to fp

cheers

First of all, sorry if I sounded too harsh. I usually give a program a fair chance of "convincing" me, but if it crashes too many times, I give up.
I may have been selfish, but my position was this:
-I tried FP and it didn't work (100%)
-I tried when I switched systems and with every update and it didn't work (failing in many different situations)
-I didn't like the registration system,so I never thought too much about it, I wouldn't buy it anyway.
-I regularly give it another try from time to time(it's been a while now), see if it improved, because it really looked good.

The crashings are in different situations and most lock up the machine, without any feedback, so I can't really place a bug or bugs.

And I try out almost every new program that appears on OSDepot/Aminet,etc. I can't give bug reports about all of them, so I restrict myself to the ones I really want/need.
Frying Pan is not a major necessity(I don't even have a DVD writer), so I hope you understand why I didn't do anything about it, so to speak.

Anyway, I'll be glad to be of service now. Feel free to ask any question about my system, etc. May be better through PM's, but I'm ok regardless.
I will try out Frying Pan more extensively later today, see if I can fetch some feedback (which wasn't possible in the past).

I am not here to convince you to register. I am not counting on it. All I want / wish for is to - at least - learn about the configuration that causes problems, especially if these are so heavy that cause deadlocks.

I admit, there are bugs, and anyone who claims their software is free of bugs simply lies. the problem is: i virtually have no way of finding them unless you help me in any way.

I am looking forward to hearing from you, I really do. just tell me the system you are running ("morphos", "os4", whatever), patches you use and other software you run commonly.

that would be just fine with me. i believe it would help me a lot.

thanks a lot,
tom.

My system is G4 OS4 with update 4. I have a Radeon 7000, a SB Live! and 512MB of RAM.
WBstartup: ASyncWB, DefIcons, RAWBInfo, OS4Reboot, AutoUpdateWB,PrintManagerOS4, Mixer, USBStart and ClickToFront.
I also have PowerIcons and Turboprint.

Downloaded and installed Frying Pan. It went ok, but the installer left an unclosable window behind.

Tried to add some files. It took a few minutes to create, if memory serves me right, "the directory tree". While at it, WB was practically useless and the FP window refused to update (I have picture of it, if you need). After a few minutes, everything got back to normal.

Creating an image brings a requester saying that there is no available space in RAM. I only selected a few MB worth of files, so there should be plenty of RAM out of 512MB, unless FP is making a full image instead of only the files selected.

Tried the Media menu option. Again, it took a couple of minutes "thinking". This time, WB was totally unusable, even the AmigaWorld window I was writing this very message was unvailable. Then the AW window stooped working, refusing to either minimize or be sent to the back. After a while, the whole system froze up, I waited about 5 minutes to see if it went back to normal, then rebooted.

This is VERY weird and doesn't happen with any of the hundreds of programs I've tried with my A1.

I'm sure the satisfied users of FP don't have this behavior, it's too irritating. My system may be guilty, but I have a pretty simple system,I guess.
I may have a GR, a lock up, but these symptoms put together is new to me.

@BrandonLee

Have you checked that you have the latest versions of the required MUI modules?

@Samwel

And those are...? The three links in the site are dead. :(

Can't say for sure, but I doubt that the wrong MUI modules could cause such extensive havoc.

Yet, here's what I have:

NList.mcc-20.116
NListView.mcc-19.71
NListTree.mcc-18.23
NListTree.mcp-18.11
