I DID read it, and this is what it says:

Where in the heck does that tell me the answer to what I asked? A simple Yes or No would have taken much less effort than posting a smart ass answer!

I agree, but the problem with a simple "Yes" or "No" is that people can easily get nailed down on such a statement. Once burnt ("2 production runs in 2005"), twice shy.
Let's see it just as a continuation of the fuzziness of Troika's "news" releases. Some examples:

"allowed us to begin due diligence procedures"
"Acquiring the rights to this motherboard will allow us"
"by forming new alliances we will be able"
"Provided we are able to do this"
"we plan on offering"
"we shall post"

They never said what they really did and at what point they arrived, they just kept posting woolly intentions for the future.

@ Herewegoagain

Amy will be there, a representative of Troika will be there. With regards to if the board will be running anything - we await the official statement from Troika regarding that.

They have stated that they will give us further information before the show.

So this is not a case of FUD - but a case of we honestly do not know.

But - Amy'05 and Troika represenative will be there... so who knows.. they may surprise us. They have to as their credibility rests on this show.

Incidentally - when I said:

"They have stated that they will give us further information before the show."

I meant us in the collective us, and not just people working on BB4, but the Amiga community. Troika said in the thread that Jurassic reffered you to, that they would be releasing a public statement before the event.

I expect a fluffy statement as to why OS4 doesn't yet run on the Amy or as to why they haven't yet managed to acquire a license from Amiga Inc.
But, we'll see...

I notice Hyperion will not be at big bash, but will be at AmiWest a few weeks later. What could this mean? Idea: New hardware is introduced at Big Bash. OS4.0 is tested with new hardware for a few weeks and the kinks are worked out. Completed OS4.0 and new hardware are shown at AmiWest. Then "Merry Christmas" for lots of people.

We are also pleased to share with you that Dennis Vanweeren of "Minimig" fame will be exhibiting minimig at Big Bash and Retro. I would like to say a big thankyou to Dennis for making this journey to England.

I take the full blame on this one. Ian who is scheduled for BB4 wanted to demo working Amy's. I pulled the plug ....so to speak.

First off we have "working Amy's".

Second, my statement made regarding Os4 still stands.

We are bringing our Project "Prometheus"/ Amy'05 to (Show & Tell) at BB4. We want as many interested in Amy to see her, and get your questions answered.

Also, It's still very possible for us to make very small changes to Amy, so we also ask for your "feedback" at BB4, and after.

Looking forward to a great BB4 & Amiwest.

You are *completely* mad: Having a (mostly?) working OS4 mobo, and then just showing an inert PCB at the BB4, is not only ridiculous, it is asking far more faith than most Amigans have in you (after your non-appearance at the last Big Bash). Frankly, the response you are likely to get is "I don't believe you. I'm not going to wait another 6-12 months. B*gger this, I'm going to buy a Mac/Peg/etc." ((((((

I understand your feelings Chris, now understand mine.

We got burned last year by a contractor, and it cost us our reputation.

Chris, we both want the same thing. Our time, money, and reputation are on the line so you just have to let us do it our way.

I hope you can visit BB4, have a wonderful time and come away impressed with our Amy.

Any explanation to why you did that? I mean, what's the reason for "pulling the plug" when you tell us in the next sentence that you have *cough* "working Amy's"?

@hatschi:
I suspekt the Amy's are not working as expected: only with Linux or only upto the BIOS.

Yes, that could be right. But even seeing Linux running would show us that the hardware was "almost there", and that the OS4 port should not be far behind.

It sounds like a lame excuse to say they got burned by contractors last time, so no-show this time: Last time they were rushing to get a prototype built for the BB - whereas this time they already have "working" mobos, so it surely can't be too hard to bring a couple along?

I really wish that Troika & ACK would just be more honest about the current state of their hardware (rather than make wild predictions, get burned, and then refuse to say or show a bloody thing.) If the Troika mobo runs Linux, but without DMA & some drivers are missing, that would still be better news than "Here's what a (seemingly) non-functioning mobo looks like, we won't tell you anything, but please get wildly excited about it".

The AmigaOne (SE/XE) was initially demonstrated running Linux at shows, OS4 didn't run on it untill a year later.

Oh boy. I thought that Amy's design was already nailed down long ago. I gotta agree with others. If it runs anything at all that you can show, people will understand that it is still in the development stage. I'm not confident that people will be wow'd or excited by seeing a non functional mobo. Anyway, best of luck with it.

Obviously you will do it "your" way. I just think that you are shooting yourself in the foot, and was trying to suggest that this wasn't the best thing to do.

As Herewegoagain said - best of luck. I hope that the public (both at the event & afterwards when on-line) reacts to this better than I think. At least you told us that it won't be shown working, so expectations won't be smashed at the BB4.

Hi,

Sorry if you were expecting a live demo, due to some technical issues it has been delayed. No doubt that statement will be debated ad nauseam, but I will be at the show with a developer prototype to answer your questions.

I should point out that the board you will see is the V1.4 design which has had numerous updates from the last publically released design and is locked. These boards will only be available to developers. There will be a few bugs in the hardware I have yet to find. Once the design is more mature, V1.4a will be created, this will be the general release version, there may be an opportunity to make some changes, hence why we ask for some feedback.

I have invested over 600 hours of my spare time in this project so far, it has not been easy to find the time over the last year but I have done it. How much have I been paid for this?
Zero, zip, nada, nought, nothing.
Why do it?
Because it is fun. It is an engineering design project, my requirements were simple, design and develop a low cost PowerPC based motherboard capable of running AmigaOS4 (and other OS). There have been some 'political' issues along the way which have delayed things but I have yet to work on a project (personally or professionally) where this does not happen. Unfortunately we lost many months of progress due to such issues.

Preparing for a show like BB4 has taken a reasonable amount of time over the last week, which has slowed down progress on Prometheus. It is inevitable when you goto a show or other meeting, you have to prepare and that stops the fun engineering tasks. Of course I am looking forward to the show and meeting those of you there.

I would also like to set the record straight on a few issues:

1) I was not at BB3 as I was out of the country on holiday.
2) I am no longer involved with the classic Amiga scene, I have sold most of my stuff, I had to clear the storage space for other projects.
3) There are some unfinished hardware projects on my website, so what! Other Amiga websites have unfinished designs too, I had to fit in! :)
I have transferred some of the designs to two parties who are developing them further.
4) In the past I was involved with the Phoenix Developer Consortium, it had great ideals, but issues with Genesi's involvement were my reason for leaving.
5) Yes, I worked on the RealityStation PPC set top box design, lack of funding killed that.
6) I have 26 NDAs to bear in mind when answering questions. If I am a little non-descript that is one of the reasons!

Finally, in the next few days you will see pictures of the assembled prototype PCBs and there will be full technical details published shortly. I should be on IRC Friday night and of course at the show on Saturday to answer your questions.

Have fun,

Ian
