Announcement   Announcement : DiscreetFX Sponsers a Retro Amiga Game Creation Contest starring "Hottie™

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DiscreetFX Sponsers a Retro Amiga Game Creation Contest starring "Hottie™"

Chicago, Illinois – March 23rd, 2007 -- Visual FX company DiscreetFX LLC Inc., offers $1000 to the developer or team that can create a three level demo of a platform game starring Hottie, in the classic gaming style of Arabian Nights, Shadow of the Beast, Nicky Boom, Zool, etc.

"I have noticed game development for Amiga has seemed to stagnant and want to help change that, stated DiscreetFX's CEO. So begins a fun contest to sharpen your Amiga game creation coding skills. The three level demo you create will need to run on classic Amiga's and WinUAE/E-UAE/PSPUAE. We don't care so much if it is AGA or Amiga 500 specific. We care more of the quality and polish that will go into the demo. The game will need to star "Hottie", DiscreetFX's leading virtual character. Links to her image can be found here. Link to image
Runner up prizes will also be offered and the winner will get a chance to complete the game and release it on Amiga OS 4.0, MorphOS, AROS, and other gaming systems.
More information will be available on the following site in the next week.

Hmmm... a platformer about a character that wears a split skirt. That could be a little... um... revealing?

It seems a bit odd to talk about making an OCS/AGA game, and then "get a chance to complete the game and release it on Amiga OS 4.0, MorphOS, AROS". Actually, it seems a bit odd to talk about making an OCS/AGA game at all, these days....

For 3 level demo version? That's quite enough mate. Or if you think you can get more from some other Amiga company, please tell us!

I wonder if it would possible to enter a game that requires a graphics card? UAE support 24/32 bit and many people still using classics often have a graphics card of some sort. Also I would like to know if it would be allowed to use SDL?
hmmm questions, questions

@ChrisH

Game will not run on PSPUAE if it does not support classic Amiga's.,

@Desler

Game demo could have an option to use a 24bit display card if available.

@Samurai_Crow

Hey, this looks like a job for Mattathias! Or maybe Amos?

BTW, Hottie is cool, but a guest appearance by this old favorite would be nice too. Agnes. I don't think her agent would be interested in negotiating a deal though.

Whey aye, because it's as simple as that

I was interested myself until I saw the OS3.x bit and being able to run on A500's from 1887.

Your best bet is for a MorphOS or OS4 game, not for some ancient hard3ware that can't be bought anymore.

Just my 2p worth.

@Slash

My understanding is that an AGA only game would be fine. That would run on AGA classic Amigas and WinUAE.

@DiscreetFX:

You perhaps know that AGA and RTG programming needed for a high quality game are very different approaches?

It would double the work effectively (perhaps triple it, if one chooses to implement good scrolling. I say "good" because it´s nearly impossible to do "very good" scrolling with graphics cards because of the lack of some very important techniques like WaitTOF() and such within RTG on classic machines).

Sry, I really don´t see the point in this action which would give Amiga game development a boost if classic machines respectively chipsets are priorized over the most used systems (classic with RTG and WinUAE machines).

Spend the $1000 for game-centric RTG documentation and some patches for classic RTG systems and WinUAE to implement proper ChangeScreenBuffers(), WaitBOVP(), WaitTOF() etc.

It´s very hard to find out all the neat tricks for a good in-game graphics by experimenting over months or years because there is no sufficient documentation about this topic and nobody willing to do it.

Just to clarify: Would a demo that ONLY works in 24 bit display modes (or higher) qualify for this contest or does it need to be compatible with an unexpanded a1200 (or similar) How about requirements for CPU?

This is purely a guess on my part, but I suspect the game needs to written to run on a fairly low end classic amiga, due to the fact it needs to run on pspuae, which at the moment isnt hugely fast. As for the competition itself, sounds fun, and time permitting I might attempt an entry While I understand some peoples resistance to some of the specified terms, please bear in mind that it is a "retro" games competition, and as such having it need to run on the humble ol' amigas shouldnt hurt things too much,.. its what they excel at Keep it OS friendly if u want to have it work on os4/mos/aros/amithlon/etc and use a little imagination and there's nothing stopping it still being fun
Kudos to you DiscreetFX for your continued support of our beloved platform.

@Plaz

I'm afraid that Mattathias isn't that far along yet. Amos would work though.

Sidewinder was interested in entering the contest but I think all I can offer at this time are a couple of tips to him so I'll have to sit this one out.

I've got to finish up my Music Compiler and do the write-up in order to present at the Undergraduate Research Conference at the university I attend.

@DiscreetFX

THanks! many many thanks!
I think if we look at LIONHEART and Brian THe Lion and Ruff N Tumble and Elf Mania..............we can see what can be done with an ECS Amiga.........My only request is that it require 2 MB chip and 1 MB fast. They should use these games as reference to make the ECS game look as good as possible, yet work on every Amiga. as far as Emulation........we need not be concerned if it runs smooth on PSPUAE or other emulators as long as its fully compatible..........reason being is because if it doesnt run smooth on PSPUAE or other UAE's is because there is upgrading that needs to be done on those UAE's and not necessarily the game itself. PSPUAE needs work. I would be extremely happy to see PSPUAE run AGA smoothly. Gosh! what a great thing that would be. Imagine running SCALA MM400 on that!

@anybody
anyone else know of anyone offering any money at all for a game for the Amiga??? I think not! and those who are currently creating any games....are doing it FREE! so lets be positive here...after all.it is a 3 level demo!

Hey Hondo, it's funny that you should say that about Amy, since Hottie was drawn by Eric Schwartz as well.

And I think this is one of the best ideas ever! According to my recent survey, the most popular game with Amiga gamers (at least the ones who filled in the survey) are cartoon style platform games for AGA Amigas. So I think this game, once it's made, could meet those desires perfectly. I was just thinking the other day that the Amiga needs another game featuring a sexy female character. I'm in for it, if there are any coders out there willing to attempt the programming, I'll help out with some sprites and background blocks.

One thing I'd like to know, what kind of competition are we expecting? Surely, back in the day, having several entries and choosing the best one would have been easy, but there may not be too many people willing to completely make a game by themselves. Perhaps a team effort would bring about better results, and share the prize? Then again, there are runners up prizes offered too, so I'm not sure.

In any case, it seems like Hottie has the ability to throw blue flames at people, and perhaps blow flaming kisses at them, so this could be her weapon in the game. I'm not sure what kind of setting or enemies to use though. Does anyone else have any ideas for the game?
