@COBRA

Indeed these guys send out far better vibes than ACK and Troika (especially Troika was always a joke in comparison).

can deliver new hardware relatively fast

I don't want to be picky, but no hardware has actually been delivered as of yet. At least not to consumers. It's still a giant step to go from a ready design to a production batch of a few hundred units for end-users.

And there is no mention of how they will solve the OS4 situation either, which could be another major obstacle.

I just wanted to say that although I think ACube's efforts this far has been very impressive, they are still too far away from the finish line for me to jump of joy. When/if they manage to go all the way, and have SAM boards physically at dealers, and an OS4 announcement/acknowledgment from Amiga Inc, then I will not only cheer, I will also buy it.

But we are not there now...

This is really great! Hope OS4 will be on it soon also!

My biggest problem now seems to be how to get a low-power LCD screen made for 12 volt *and* SVGA in about 14-17" for my suitcase Amiga project

Anyone knows where to get one such?

Getting a low-res 10-12" LCD made for postable DVD-players for 12V is easy, but a normal SVGA LCD for 12V not designed (and priced) for industrial purposes seems harder. Is it easy to convert a normal flat screen from 230V to 12V?

A completely different thing: I noticed the SAM only has one PS/2 connector. Does that mean the mouse or keyboard has to be connected to USB?

@Deniil715

If I'm not mistaken it's not a PS/2 but an S-Video connector. You have to use USB for both keyboard and mouse I think.

@ACube

Well done on getting the SAM to market. Now I'm looking forward to an OS4 announcement!

How about a LCD screen from an old laptop, should possible to hook up somehow?

What are the measurements of the board? A really old laptop is quite big and might be able to house the board and a 2.5" HD? Usually really cheap at flee markets.

The board is Mini-ITX which means 17x17 cm and I think
around 40 mm high with the backside connectors.

Thats a little too high for a newer laptop cabinet but I guess something portable could be done from it anyway. That is, if it ever will run OS4..

Its highlights are a very small footprint (the board height is about 2cm)

On the board there's a certain number of connectors, too: 4 Serial ATA connectors, 2 supplemental USB2.0 connectors, another USB1.1 connector, 1 VGA and 1 LVDS connector, CD/DVD in, audio in, audio out, mic in, line in, 2 I2C connectors, 1 34 pins GPIO expansion connector, 1 JTAG connector (used for CPU debugging).

@COBRA, @Swoop

How on earth did you think I suggested there was any connection between Troika & Acube?!? Really, that's kind of bizarre.

My point (if I actually had one) was that we've been waiting a hell of a long time, before (hopefully) getting OS4 h/w. And that Troika still have not delivered. 2 years is a long time.

@Troels

I have no idea about how screens in old laptops are connected. They may use something similar as the keyboard in the A1200, not possible to convert to a VGA connection in any useful way. If they are somewhat normal I could take one out and use though!

I also think that an old laptop is too small for any non-laptop motherboard (which needs power adaption to work with the laptop batteries, which btw probably are dead) + everything else. I think a small suitcase of some kind would be nicer. Then I could fit a normal slimline keyboard, a normal PSU + a lot of batteries, CD-player, all cables needed for stationary power and network, and some other stuff in there. A lot cooler than some overcrammed old laptop case which would need extenal power and which wouldn't have room for any batteries or CD anymore.

Better to do something different instead of turning the Amiga-laptop dream into some embarrasing nightmare

Think about it: A laptop is just as big as a small suitcase when you take it woth you, since its net-adapter and cables are external. With my build everything would be inside. No extra case or anything

Even if one were to make a custom laptop case for the Mini-ITX standard, it'd still be bulky. You need to ensure that any CPU heatsinks fit. You need to deal with the standard rear connectors for PS2, USB, etc. It'd be thick. It wouldn't be confused for a "new" PC laptop.

Building something into a briefcase is doable. You could probably do without the standard AC power supply and do something to run off batteries more directly through a couple voltage converters. I wouldn't be happy with such a thing myself, but it is one way to go portable, and probably easier/more practical than a custom laptop motherboard to replace a PC laptop board.

Hi Everyone,

this is what is need and this will happen within less than 4months.

1) We need Amiga OS4 on SAM - Even my dad Sam sends his blessings.

2) A Playstation running OS4 can happen in 1 year and would be a new revolution
I'm more likely to buy SAM + OS4 and then a PS3 so if i can get a discounted version of
OS4 for PS3 install CD then I would do that also.

Options: If anything I thing some smart cookies should talk with Sony and get details on how to create a PS3 compatible PCI card for the SAM or any other PPC board for that matter and get OS4 drivers to enhance games programmers options.

All the best this year is it for me, I'm buying hardware and software left right and center.
Give me Give me now.... OS4 on new PPC boards what a year.

Thanks
