Hardware News   Hardware News : New Scan Doubler tests look good!
posted by IOWASURFER on 7-Dec-2007 16:19:32 (40066 reads)
A Scan doubler for the little man!

Please let it be known if you would like a scan doubler and if its worth making
a bunch of them for the community...

I have been working with a engineer who has been creating
a scan doubler which i just tested the prototype last night.

The 2.0 Screen...Mmmm Purple..

I asked him to please make a scan doubler for the
AMIGA community like he has done for the ATARI community...

The 1.3 screen classic Amiga all the way..

An Amiga 1200 and the scan doubler... Running Work bench 3.1

This Scan doubler has the potential of working with almost all of the classic
Amiga's 500/600/1000/1200/2000/3000/4000 etc and it's way affordable.
If things work out with this unit I am testing then the units will be
available for AMIGANS soon after all testing and a few very minor bugs are squashed.

The scan doubler on a Amiga 1000 for size comparison.

The Scan doubler inside guts...

Please support this new product by posting here if you could use one.
Initial costs are to be determined but I see them way under $100$ and
as you can see by the 3 AMIGA systems I already tested this new scan
doubler on look great with a VGA flat screen monitor initial reactions are
good this will be a awesome add on to any serious
Amiga collector/hobbyist who wants to run vga...

Amiga 500 Running Wings...

Amiga 500 Running Wings...Looks great on a Lcd flat screen

Amiga 500 Running Wings... Love this game..
And heck who doesn't want to run on a regular monitor?

Here is Desert Strike screen shots... running

two questions,
1 - how does it interface with the amiga ? anything less than RGB is not very meaningful (I read about this scandoubler before and I remember it being RGB but you didn't specify in the news post, which is very important)

2 - does it handle AGA modes properly ? (24 bit color ?) my hopes are not high for this, cause it's based on atari video, which was never 24 bit AFAIK. most probably this only does 16 bit.

Yes, the most important question is which signal is used?
RGB or composit?

Hey Everyone,

It hooks to the back of each Amiga RGB 24 pin connector and it spits out
a signal to any ((( VGA )) monitor !!

As far as 24 bit colors etc etc I am afraid thats why we have the High end systems that use those expensive cards features in the 4000 etc and are serious hardware solutions
this is exactly what it is a classic

AMIGA scan doubler fix to go from (( RGB 24 pins to VGA 15 pins.. )))

Roy the designer and engineer of this scan converter
has put a lot of electronics's into this box...

Please keep the questions coming!!

Joe..

I would definitely take one if it was under $100 US.

Cool!
The monitor for my old A500 (with 68EC020@40MHz and X-surf network card) broke down a year ago. Since then I was trying to find a cheap replacement. Count me in!

I will take it for my Amiga 1300 that is on configuration but I don't like
that it can't handle 24 bit images.
Anyway I am thinking to get a new scandoubler/flickerfixer and this seems to be good.

I have a scandoubler for my A1200 that I bought a few years ago, but it gets extremely hot, and it doesn't work too well with some LCD screens.

I'd like to know:

1. How hot does this one get during normal operation?
2. Does it deinterlace as well as scandouble (flicker fixer)?
3. Has it been tested with more than a couple of LCD screens?
4. How much would it cost?

I am interested, since my current scandoubler gets so hot that I've stopped using it.

Yeah wait, a flicker fixer would even be better! I used NTSC HighRes Interlaced for the Workbench on my A500.

A cheap scan doubler is long overdue.

This is a 16 bit unit so its a step in the right direction for now..

Joe...
Well I cut the resolution on the prototype down to 12 bits to test it there first.

I also added noise filters on the input of the prototype
which may contribute to test.

Tell everybody that the resolution will be 16 bit in the future.

Roy

Yes, I'd like one also.

My wish list for this device, if it were to evolve some more, would be to have the following additional features, all in a single unit:

1. flicker fixer
2. PC mouse => Amiga mouse
3. PC keyboard => Amiga keyboard

With 2 & 3, you could use a regular KVM to switch between PC and Amiga, using the same monitor, keyboard and mouse. That would be awesome!

Or would it be really hard to add features 2 & 3?

I'd pay $150 for a version that did all that.

Jingof

Okay. What happens with an AGA 1280x512 or even 1440x576 PAL interlaced screen?

This is great news!

I am really impressed.

I might buy 3 or 4 units but I would love the following:

1) Flickerfixer

2) Reduced in size, maybe as big as the external Power Scandoubler? Is that possible?

3) How does it work with an Amiga 1200 with a BVision, is there a switch somewhere to switch from gfx card mode to Amiga modes?

4) What price?

Great job!
