Software News   Software News : U-Boot 1.3.1 for Sam440ep released
   posted by ChrisH on 9-Dec-2008 18:35:55 (4857 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, 08 Dec 2008

ACube Systems is pleased to announce the release of a new version of U-Boot firmware for its line of motherboards Sam440ep. With this new release a number of problems have been fixed together with the adding of Dual Graphic Cards support.

What's new in this version:
  • U-Boot can enable at the same time the onboard M9 and an external PCI gfx board. This allows the use of an additional gfx card under OS4.1 for example (tested with a 9250 and 7000 PCI cards)
  • implemented the "reset" command
  • fixed the "ide reset" command
  • introduced a new uboot var "scan_usb_storage" to scan for USB mass storage devices (disabled by default)
  • reworked menu and removed unused items

For additional information, please read the press release.

Great news. I hope that I can use my Radeon 9250 card now. How we can update the new firmware though?

Hmm... I posted the same news a couple of hours ago.

Good news.

Now all we need is our own SAM440 boards to run the updates on

As the SAM uses the same FD040 eeprom chip as the AmigaOne, I'd just like tomention that I have Flash writing equipment and a stock of spare chips, just in case anyone runs into trouble flashing UBoot on their machine.

@amigadad
Looks like ACube have just failed to bump the version number for some reason.

1.3.1 July 23, 2008 is the previous version of uboot released for the SAM440

Well, someone valiant that wants to do the installtion of this patch and after speak us about the process and other things?

I read the pdf document, and this patch only is to use in dual mode of PCI graphic card join the mother board, well, I don't install, I think that it was more important, comparate with the risk, but where you can to find now a PCI graphic card new? only solution the Efika adapter for AGP cards.

Downloaded, flashed and re-booted OK. Phew! I don't know why but I'm always nervous when I have to re-flash a device. I suppose it dates back to previous experience with Phase 5 Cyberstorm accelerators?

@Templario

It also add USB boot support and some sort of IDE reset fix which sounds like some sort of reset issue with the SATA drives being fixed on reboot.

So an update dose sound worthwhile to me as it should allow you to but off an external USB harddisk or CD/DVD drive. It hopefully also fixes the issues people have reported with having to unplug USB CD/DVD drivers until OS4.1 boots, but as I dont yet have a board I cant test any of this myself.

I ran the update as soon as it was available. The process is basically what's described in the doc: download the archive, unarchive it and burn the ISO to a CD using something like AmiDVD. Put the CD in the Sam and do a cold boot. The CD will automatically boot and run the updater. When it says to do so press the space bar and the updater will erase the flash rom and then write the update to the rom.

As others have said the update does more than just allow the use of dual graphics cards. It is also necessary if you want to set up a dual boot system for OS4.1 and Linux once the new SLB is available.

WARNING
DO NOT INSTALL THE "Dual Graphics Card" support files (PCIGraphics), because it will cause OS4.1 Workbench to crash on boot, due to the PCIGraphics file is missing the "executable" flag (ACube messed-up). Fixing it at this point required fiddling with the Shell without booting the Startup-sequence (let me know if anyone needs help!).

Luckily, you can fix this: Before installing the PCIGraphics file in the Devs:Monitor drawer, ensure that Executable flag is ticked (left click on it & choose Icon/Information...).

@ChrisH

Sorry for the trouble, I've fixed the archive so it should be safe to download and use the files.

In the meantime if someone already installed it, booting with the installation CD and setting the Executable flag on :Devs/Monitors/PCIGraphics file should fix the problem.

Regards
