Software News   Software News : Status Report: Digibooster Professional 3
   posted by AndreasM on 2-May-2009 13:23:39 (5365 reads)
APC&TCP respondible for the distribution and development of the music software Digibooster Professional 3 wants to give you an overview of the development of the new version as stated on 19th January 2009 in the news.

First of all we have to say that the program is being rewritten from scratch opening new opportunities which haven't been possible with the old sources of Version 2.xx or at least without an unacceptable amount of work. The program structure can be enhanced now and designed with more efficiency in mind.

playback routine

The implementation of the playback routine on the basis of Digibooster Professional version 2.xx in the new version 3 is nearly finished. Smaller effect commands like Sxx (Pitch up/down) or Lxx (setting of envelope position) and the DSP echo effects parameters (Vxx, Wxx, Xxx, Yxx, Zxx) must be implemented yet. Once we have done that the new playback routine will equal to 100% the one of version 2.xx on the new basis.
Moreover the new playback routine will be very portable having a positive effect on the portability to non AmigaOS compatible platforms.
Furthermore the new playback routine will be 100% independent of AHI.

Digibooster Professional 3 GUI

The basic GUI functions like
* trackerraster
* instrument list
* edit options (new, delete, change, ...)
are already implemented.

In addition the programm will run with several tasks (tracker, player, ...).
Visual customization using different skins will be possible too.

DigiRoller

This external program will enable you to render music files to complete AIFF or WAV files. It will be made available to the community for open testing shortly. Please note that this isn't the final version.

At this point we would like to advise you of the support forum of Digibooster Professional. Everyone interested in the development and integration of new ideas is welcome to take part at the discussions.

Good to hear the thing is progressing well!

Frankly speaking, the gadtools-based GUI is a bit of a let-down but I understand that choosing a specific GUI toolkit like RA or MUI would complicate porting to other platforms.

How will using gadtools help to port to non-Amiga platforms ? When compared with MUI or anything else ?

I meant MorphOS and AROS, which I believe will be their primary targets after AmigaOS. Gadtools means a common denominator of the three systems.

Well, by being AHI independant, it seems they are targetting non Amiga platforms. And MUI is available in all three Amiga platforms. So I don't see the problem in using it...

i'd remove the term "professional" from it, i don't see it used in any professional environment, it's already too much outdated, even for a tracker, and such a GUI would give headache to the bravest of producers...
as for non-amiga platforms, how would it compete with such a gem like Renoise ?

so it should better stick to the amigas, the third world.

I hope they keep the old school Amiga looking interface. I hated the skins they had on the old version. It made it seem to busy and complicated. Go the Octamed route and keep the interface simple.

There is no GadTools GUI. It is Magic User Interface in its basic config on AmigaOS 3.x. DigiBooster 3 and DigiRoller are both MUI applications with all benefits of this fact.

If it does not use AHI then how does it output sound?

If it does not use AHI then how does it output sound?

It may use AHI (and it uses AHI in fact), but it does not depend on it. DigiBooster 2.x replayer relied on AHI resampling, mixing and effects (like echo). The new routine does all these things internally, just producing a ready downmix. It means AHI is only used as a backend for directing sound to a soundcard, but plays no role in module synthesising. This approach opens some new possibilities. The synthesis engine is portable, so having sample-by-sample precise replayer on non-Amiga systems is not a big work. On classic Amigas it is possible to bypass AHI completely, saving considerable amount of CPU power. Rendering a module to file does not require AHI to be installed at all...

I don't think that is the fault of Gadtools, I'd blame it in Topaz 8. It always makes things look old fashioned. Not as good as it used to look in '93 on my A1200.

What if you used the Paula hardware mode for this? Would it still be slower with the hardware doing the mixing? (As it should.)

Paula hardware mode is limited to 8 bits and 4 channels with no stereo panorama.
