Software News   Software News : AMIGIFT 2.0 Has Been Released!
   posted by diegocr on 1-Jun-2009 19:10:09 (7255 reads)
The AMIGIFT Project Team is proud to announce the immediate availability of the Final 2.0 Release. AMIGIFT is a peer-to-peer filesharing application which connect to several networks at once by using plug-ins. Furthermore, it isn't another simple port but a 100% AmigaOS Native Application, and thanks to its dynamically loadable system to plugins it's not limited to the current know network plugins, being new plug-ins easly created. And, of course, it includes a full-featured Graphical User Interface, made using MUI.

Read More...

Yeah, it has happened... after a very long period of development, the Final 2.0 Version see the light, no more pre-releases! The list of changes since the previous public release are quite considerable, we encourage you to take the time to read through the ChangeLog if you're interested on using the program.

Most important changes to mention are the following:

1) The daemon no longer uses ixemul, we have now a totally native application!
2) Each of the libs and plug-ins are now compiled and loaded individually, rather than linked with the daemon executable.
3) GiFTMui (The MUI front-end) uses now MUI Custom Classes for everything.
4) LOTS of code have been either rewritten from scratch or optimized.
5) There's now a dopus-like file manager embed into GiFTMui.
6) ...and much, MUCH, more!

AMIGIFT 2.0 is designed on a portable fashion, hence you can test it quite easly, Here's a Quick-Start Guide:

1) Remove any signal of existance of any previous amigift version. ¹
2) Download the main archive (AMIGIFT-2.0.lha, link below)
3) Extract it somewhere, eg RAM:, and launch GiFTMui.
4) On this step, at your first run, you need to configure it, please read the documentation for further info on this (link below).

Please take a few minutes to read through the Getting Started documentation chapter for full details on how to start using AMiGiFT, the link is:

http://amigift.sourceforge.net/index.php?starting

¹ You should be able to use your previous Incoming drawer, though.

All of the available downloads can be found from the following URL:

Thanks a lot to everybody supporting us, and specially for your understanding with the slow development, we hope the delay worth the trouble and you'll enjoy the best ever amigift release

Sincerely,
Diego Casorran.

had you submited your Amigift GUI screenshots to the official site of GiFt so that they include in the GUIs page? it would be a good advertising for AmigaOS :)

Hmm, well... considering i didn't learn English in a school, and therefore my words (vocabulary) are quite limited on this language, i wonder if you may have right... hmm, but No, i don't think so... well... at least it was not my intention at all.

Thanks for this much awaited update! I have tried to run it on my Os4.1 machine, I have installed openurl and MCC_TextInput 68k from Jabberwocky's site, unfortunately it crashes during initialization, here's the crashlog:

@diego: huh, it makes an impression of a solid app. i do not know how much i really need it but the community sure deserves more programs like that. very nice. hope will be able to try it out.

edit: here on 3.9 it seems to work. havnt configured it yet though.

Are there any reasons for requesting openurl.library 7? Version 6 would be not enough?

@Varthall

Thanks for the report/crashlog. but to be honest i have no idea why the kernel did a Trap there...

At the 'Initializing' step, third part libs/classes are checked to ensure minimum required are installed, could you please check with Snoopy at which step/component the crash occur?

Someone reported already a similar crash under sam, but he did not had installed textinput.. and he is an os4-betatester with newer components than the ones supplied with the last OS4.1 distro (There are OS4.1 users do not having this problem)

btw, the "dependencies" archive includes all third part resources used by amigift.

To handle "mailto:" links from within GiFTMui, IIRC (implemented it quite long time ago) there i've noticed certain problems by using 6.x here under OS3.9 and found that using 7.x the problems was solved, so i just changed the requirement to be from 7.0.

anyhow, mailto: links isn't something crucial and the program can live without it, but what problem is there from using openurl 7.x? (I have been informed you MOS users only uses 6.3 as supplied with release 2.2, and refuses to install latest 7.3 version(?))

Edit: the one included on the deps archive for MOS users is this one, irrc: http://aminet.net/package/comm/www/OpenURLMOS

@diegocr

I have checked with Snoopy and I have found out that I was missing the vapor_#?.library files in LIBS:, I believe they are required by TextInput.mcc (or anyway by another MUI library). I don't know if it's possible to check if they're missing from within AmiGift, or if it's the MUI library itself that crashed.

I have read the dependencies list on the homepage and have installed all the required libraries (I was missing quite a few), now the program correctly runs. I have first tried using it without reading the documentation, and tried pressing "Connect" without having configured the client, from that moment the "Incomplete setup" error window appears every x seconds, and there seem to be no way to stop it appearing, although it seems that if you leave the error window open and wait for some minutes, the "Disconnect" button is unghosted, pressing it make the error window not to appear anymore. IMHO it would be better to just make the window appear once if no settings have been done.

The crash happens either at a call to:

MUI_NewObjectA("Textinputscroll.mcc", NULL);

or (if that call returns NULL):

MyOpenLibrary("MUI/Textinputscroll.mcc",0);

(...)

My OpenLibrary()-replacement checks for dependencies at the following locations:

CurrentDir
CurrentDir/LIBS
CurrentDir/PlugIns
ParentDir
ParentDir/LIBS
ParentDir/Plugins

(i wonder if there could be some problem related to the ParentFH's lock..)

That interval is defined from Preferences->GiFTMui->sockopt (auto-connect interval)

When you get this behavior, just keep the requester open and go to the prefs to configure the program..

but you're right... this should have designed on a better way, probably.

@Varthall

Well, we can be sure if the crash happens into Textinput or into GiFTMui itself, if the crash happens as well by a missing component other that Textinput (?)

have you tryed with "MorphOS" like keyword? this new version is very sensible and it usually prefers a more precise bug report

Searching for Amiga, or Amiga-copyrighted titles, causes a window to come up with the "Against Piracy Campaign" logo, and the search is disallowed.

I am not bothered at all that you (or someone else) get a crash at this point.

(however.. i'll try to check the code related to this (which is here as-is since amigift 1.x))
