Software News   Software News : iODBC - Independent Open DataBase Connectivity for AmigaOS4
   posted by afxgroup on 11-Feb-2010 15:45:16 (9139 reads)

iODBC for AmigaOS4 Package is available to download.

What is ODBC?

ODBC is the acronym for Open DataBase Connectivity, a Microsoft Universal Data Access standard that started life as the Windows implementation of the X/Open SQL Call Level Interface specification. Since its inception in 1992 it has rapidly become the industry standard interface for developing database independent applications. Is is also the emerging standard interface for SQL based database engines replacing many of the first generation Embedded SQL and proprietary call level interfaces provided by database engine and database connectivity middleware vendors alike.
What is the ODBC Value Proposition?

The ability to develop applications independent of back-end database engine.
What is iODBC?

iODBC is the acronym for Independent Open DataBase Connectivity, an Open Source platform independent implementation of both the ODBC and X/Open specifications. It is rapidly emerging as the industry standard for developing solutions that are language, platform and database independent.
What is the iODBC Value Proposition?

The ability to develop applications independent of back-end database engine, operating system, and for the most part programming language. Although ODBC and iODBC are both 'C' based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) there are numerous cross language hooks and bridges from languages such as: C++, Java, Perl, Python, TCL etc.

iODBC has been ported to numerous platforms, including Linux (x86, Itanium, Alpha, Mips, and StrongArm), Solaris (Sparc & x86), AIX, HP-UX (PA-RISC & Itanium), Digital UNIX, Dynix, Generic UNIX 5.4, FreeBSD, MacOS 9, MacOS X, DG-UX, and OpenVMS and now on AmigaOS4.
Which drivers are supported?

Actually most of common Open Source database are supported. Drivers for MySQL, PostgreSQL and SQLite are present into the package and has been tested connecting AmigaOS4 to a Windows machine. Also SQL Server is supported. Other drivers are in working. Check the Driver page for all news about driver pages.

This version is a Beta version and contains a lot of Debug informations.
These informations are useful for me to understand if something is wrong.
If you have problems please send me a mail and i'll take a look at it.

This is an epic achievement and will now make it possible to put Amigas in the business place as client workstations.

just some things...

1) Unpack iODBC package somewhere and copy its content into:

SYS:Libs/ODBC

2) i'm writing a manual and (maybe also) and installer but actually i want to remove all problems first
3) the sql manager can be used from any location in your hard disk
4) refer to the iODBC web site for all useful informations

http://www.iodbc.org/dataspace/iodbc/wiki/iODBC/

@DiskDoctor

Yep, that would be nice - a python module or an ARexx library (i.e. porting the RexxSQL lib for Regina...).

I feel stupid, but what exactly does it do ? And what kind of programs use this ?

Sorry for being so ignorant

ODBC provides a standard interface so that applications can interact with repositories of data using industry conventions. Prior to ODBC, drivers would be proprietary and calling conventions would be specific to each database.

Applications that use ODBC cover a wide spectrum -- anything that stores to or retrieves data from a repository. That covers a lot of territory. :)

@afxgroup

Congratulations on finishing this. I don't have an immediate use for it right now, but it's only going to be a matter of time before I write something that needs a database.

In your opinion, is it worth using iODBC for something that 99% of people are only going to need sqlite for? One major factor would be that, with Sqlite, you can automatically create a new database without having to ask the user what type, where the server is, etc. Is that possible with iODBC? Basically, I'd like to know if you could use this for programs of any size, or if it's more suitable for programs that require heavy duty database servers.

Hans

If AmigaOS 4.1 becomes a more serious OS like Windows, Linux or Mac before I die, I am going to make it officially one hundred percent AmigaOS 4.1 as my only OS till the day I day and will be only using it 100% as my main PC for all daily life. We need A GOOD DEVELOPING tool like Visual Studio with .NET technology support, if there is away we can have a developing tool like Visual Studio or at least supports .NET technology with similarity like Visual Studio, a browser that is as equally functioning as a PC browser, more of these DATABASE programs ported to AmigaOS, etc, etc, etc....I will migrate permanently to AmigaOS 4.1 until I become completely senile, and need someone to change my urine pocket! That is a promise for myself. So keep it up guys, this iODBC have brought a big smile to my face and I see AmigaOS 4.1 in a whole new face...please...more....I BEG YOU MORE!
