Software News   Software News : Timberwolf Alpha 1 released
   posted by RuDeE on 9-Jun-2010 15:29:19 (16249 reads)
From Amigabounty.net:

Quote:

We have to apologize for the long absence. Workload, personal issues and other things slowed down development considerably.

However, we're finally able to make the first binary release of Timberwolf. This is going to be an Alpha version, meaning it will be prone to crashing and misbehavior, it will be slow, and not all functionality is implemented yet.

Future plans include an update to the latest baseline source code of Firefox (3.7 beta), an Amiga-specific theme, as well as a major rewrite of the rendering code. The current version of the rendering code (Did we mention it's an alpha release ?) has some conceptual problems that will lead to misrenderings, and massive overdraw (some webpages might be rendered 2 to 8 times, you may notice the window will turn black several times during page buildup).

Feedback is welcome; please point your browsers at http://amigans.net and visit the Timberwolf support forum.

Have fun with the first release.

@Nibunnoichi

Sure, I downloaded it adjusted it to be able to compile, tested it and deleted it as I did 5 years ago ;)

@developers or someone in the know

AFAICR Firefox got javascript with JIT compiler which OWB lacks. Is it true that the amiga version of firefox got that as well and that it might be a reason for the speed-up on some sites?

@Nibunnoichi

I didnt miss that news either. I checked it and changes were tiny if not even regression. But it is ok, the developer is obviously new Amigan and still learning.

@hotrod

Only x86, x86-64 and ARM are supported.

@hotrod

OWB is based on WebKit, and WebKit has a JIT javascriptcore... for X86 and ARM...
The same applies to FireFox, though its JIT is less performant.

@Dax

Please, please inform us all what qualifies you to argue with an actual devloper that uses webkit development tools all the time. Please tell us how you can possibly argue with FAB about this issue. Its quite amusing..

I don't see Firefox performing better on AmigaOS vs. Whatever/X86 assuming same CPU power.

Makes sense, but sam-wise that's not what i've been hearing, many are reporting that on Sam AmigaOS is way faster than Debian so this might extend to Native FF as well (and who knows? ...."

@ DAX

I can confirm that TimberWolf in Alpha stage runs much quicker than IceWeasel under Debian on my Samflex@800....I too was concerned about all the hype that people were saying that it would be slow like on the PC but am very happy to report that we don't have to worry about that now

@ realize

I think DAX is just commenting on his own personal testing observations and I can confirm his findings on my own system as well, just wondering, but are you making these statements because you have personally tested both OWB and TimberWolf on your Sam and have different results

@Realize
I know about Fab don't worry, and as klx300r already said above, I'm just describing the behavior of both browsers on 4.1+Sam.

As for the issue at hand, my comparison (as I said many times) is made with A)My experience with IGN.com before they added the (in)famous shadow, and a buggy Alpha of TW that renders the site (as is right now), way faster than OWB did when there was no shadow at all.

My assumption is that if IGN takes the shadow out again, OWB will be back to normal (which was slower than TW anyway) while TW will certainly not be slowed down by the fact that it now has one less thing to render (it will probably render faster still).

Finally my bottom line is that if we add to all of the above a final version that works right, it is only logical that the present performance gap would be enlarged even further.

All this in a AmigaOS4.1 talk, not involving other OSs.

I dont think its fair to compare firefox on os4 vs other systems before timberwolf gets completed (non alpha, non beta). When everything works its worth comparing and saying its slower/faster blabla. :)

Makes sense. But still, if someone with lesser technical knowledge gets over enthusiastic, its a good opportunity to jump on the dirty OS4.1 user and beat him down for his own good.

@kicko
you know, if you asked me a week ago i would have said not to do it at all, I mean, everyone was saying (based on how it performed on other OSs/computers) that on weak HW would crawl "while here we better use OWB" and blah blah blah (and I was actually a believer of that) and then all of a sudden this thing comes out, in pre-alpha, full of bugs, redrawing everything several times, and yet it is not any slower (and seem faster in certain regards).

What a U turn!

Don't blame me if I'm happy about that

@All,

I drafted a wonderful comment and previewed it using Timberwolf. There were a few snags like menu highlights being several item below the mouse pointer and no bookmark panel, yet. Still, it is way better than an Alpha 1. Thanks very much, Rogue.

And then.

I tried the pulldown menu to change from preview to 'Post Comment' and just got a grey box! So, this comment comes to you from iBrowse.

I still find it hard to believe that Timberwolf works as well as it does. I suppose there is a lot more work to be done, but it is already usable. The rendering engine doesn't seem at all bad, to me. Perhaps I visited the wrong sort of sites.

What I gained from the experience is the patience to wait 'until it's done'. Should we be reporting bugs, or is it too early?

Regards
Roy Leith

@royleith
In order to change that state, you need to click it with the L-mouse button and while holding it down press the "down" arrow key on the keyboard once, then release the L-Mouse button.
Notice that when you press the down arrow key the state of the grey box won't change but as soon as you release, you will see the change in the small dialog box (I know, not exactly "elegant" but they'll fix it )

Well done to the developers... I hope this means other OS's (AROS/MOS) will be able to get a port too.

Don't hold your breath for either a port to other Amiga platforms or an open source version. The Friedens are not known for doing or being fans of either of these things, this even though they have in this and many other instances reaped the benefits from open source projects and code hat others have started or made available for this and other platforms. Anyway, I'm not being critical, just realistic. I am however very enthusiastic about their accomplishments in getting such an important piece of software to AmigaOS4.

Well,they will release sources required by the licenses.

So if people don't agree with what they release. You should complain to the firefox guys who made the rules.
