I can't see how a game like BOH can help you relax, but, well, also I can't be but glad of it _________________ RETREAM - retro dreams for Amiga, Commodore 64 and PC

You need to install all the previous updates in the correct order.

In short, sidestepping has been removed because that feature wasn't necessary at all and made controls more complicated than they were meant to be. This is the detailed explanation I put in the website FAQ:
Quote:
Q8: Is there strafing? Is it possible to strafe and turn at the same time? A: [short answer]
The full version of the game included strafing until update12, although turning simultaneously has never been possible. Strafing has been removed by update13.
[long answer]
Initially, the game did not have strafing, because I wanted basic controls. Not much before the initial release, a friend asked me to add it. I did, albeit reluctantly because that inevitably required more buttons. Therefore, I decided to add just a button that would change the action of the turning buttons to strafing. After a while, another friend told me he would find more comfortable to have a dedicated button to strafe in each direction, instead of having to press the strafing activation button in conjunction with the turning ones. Despite I liked the idea of adding two more buttons even less, I found that request more than reasonable, and so I granted it. However, I have never been happy with the fact that controls got so much more complicated than I originally wanted. That thought has been haunting me more and more also because strafing: * is completely unnecessary: all missions can be finished and fighting enemies is absolutely very possible even without it (by the way, I never use it and I have designed and deeply tested all the missions without considering/using strafing); * makes creating themes more demanding, as additional sprites have to be created (and they are even among the hardest ones) - this is not bad just for me, but for whoever decides to have a go at creating an own theme; * calls for the possibility of turning at the same time (as the question this is an answer to does), which would require an even more refined control method (exactly the opposite of my original idea). Now I have come to the conclusion that adding strafing was a mistake in first place and that is why, as said above, at some point it has been fixed for good.

Well, compared to the original version, you can consider the current version a BOH 2 (or 3)... and you got it for free!

Oh, and the update-scripts are not fail-safe. There's always the final note: "Errors occure". I finally installed BOA from scratch again and aplied all 13 updates, just to find out, that there's no error (because the error log is empty) but that message is there even with the very first update. |
First of all, thanks for the kind test. And sorry for the inconvenience. I thouroughly (actually, obsessively) test all the update packages on all systems and such a thing never happened to me, so let me ask: on which OS? after the execution, do things work as expected?

Unfortunately, I lost all may save games in this way .. sigh .. but that was my own fault |
Ouch, that's very sad! Whenever you have to fiddle with mission files, don't hesitate to ask for support.

Oh, sorry. I forgot that BOA is available for quite a number of operating systems. Of course , I use AmigaOS4
If you start an update script (which, by the way, lack the "s" flag and "IconX" in Icon Information (instead Multiview is set)) for the first 5 or so update-lha-archives, a console window opens which waits for your confirmation that you have read the README file. Then, after a requester opened and after selecting the BOA-Drawer, you see in that window that some patches are applied and at the end the message "Error occurs" appears and a remark to sent in the error logfile found in T: (which is empty).
As I didn't knew if i really applied all updates to my BOA installation on my Sam440ep's AOS4, I tried a fresh install. This "Error occurs" is displayed for each update, even for the very first one. Apparently, there's no error and the game works very well.

Never really bothered with the straffe mode so not unhappy to see it go. Just had a quick play and all is looking good.

The problems you've encountered sounded so strange that I installed a copy from scratch, downloaded all the update packages and applied them. This is what I can report: * 's' bit: you're right, it was missing until update10 (included)! I'm surprised that escaped me; I have now re-uploaded all the packages with the permission bits fixed; * IconX/MultiView: all icons had IconX as default tool; in the past, a couple of times, I updated all the packages, but IIRC MultiView was never specified there (I wonder if I've just forgotten that problem); * the updaters worked flawlessly: the final report for all of them was always "no error occurred".
It sounds like it might be a filesystem issue: * what filesystem does the partition where BOH resides use? * where do you have T:, and what is its filesystem?
Or an issue with the List command - can you please execute this little script and report its output, please?
Echo >T:thisfileisempty List T:thisfileisempty LFORMAT=§%L§ Delete T:thisfileisempty

Thanks!! Downloaded and tested. Nice new theme!
Also I was curious about some of the translations, so I found that "récord" is actually an accepted spanish word for best result, so you would like to correct that (the missing accent)
And I was wondering, is there a way to reset the missions. There was a text file where you can delete the missions completed, but that seems not to be the case now. Last edited by emeck on 19-Aug-2010 at 05:06 PM.
