Software News   Software News : U-Boot 1.3.1c for Sam440ep released
   posted by m3x on 6-Dec-2010 19:16:54 (8019 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, Italy - 6 December 2010

ACube Systems is pleased to announce yet another new release of the U-Boot firmware for its line of motherboards Sam440ep and Sam440ep-flex.

What's new in this version:

* Fixed wrong setting for the MMUCR register
* Introduced a new Video Option: Console. Setting it to “Silent” will produce a more nice looking boot screen (see picture below)
* On Sam440ep-flex: if a SiliconMotion 502 is present, and it's not set as primary video card, the SM502 I/O and MEM access are disabled in PCI_COMMAND register after initialization. This prevent some problems when booting AOS4.1 in a dual gfx card setup.
* On Sam440ep-mini: if a Radeon PCI card is present, and the onboard video card is not set as primary video card, the onboard video card I/O and MEM access are disabled in PCI_COMMAND register after initialization. This prevent some problems when booting AOS4.1 in a dual gfx card setup.
* Solved a problem when assigning IRQ to a video card behind a PCI to PCI Express bridge (RadeonHD)
* Video unit and Sprite unit are switched off on SM502
* Solved a problem with the Blitter unit registers not reset to default values at powerup on SM502
* Now it's possible to set baudrate to 230400 and 307200 bps (for faster debug output)
* Changed boot logo
* Reduced font size

The updated installation guide describes in detail the usual installation method (ISO image) and alternative methods (TFTP).

You can download installation archives from:

* Sam440ep: http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=1
* Sam440ep-flex: http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=2

Additional information:

Please note: UBoot and UBoot updater makes use of GPL code and thus are both published under GPL.

The sources can be downloaded from:

* http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=2

or, using a direct link, from:

Nice, all we need now is for SLB (Second Level Booter) to be re-written to allow it's text output to be switched off and just show the loading progress bar. Then it would look like a more professional boot.

The fact that it prints out it's info at the bottom of the screen and has to scroll the screen seems to slow it down, if it cleared the screen first, there would be no need to scroll.

@m3x
It appears that we no-longer need the "Sam440ep_setup" program with this firmware update.

But do I still need to use the "Sam440_pci-mini-update" ISO image? (Not used it yet, as I want to benchmark the difference)

You still need it, for the PCI registers setting which speedup reading performance from gfx card.

Yes you need it, the PCI update change a hardware setting on your board, it has nothing to do with U-Boot or any OS you load.

There's an independent project intending to do that.

I'm pressing ''enter'' after the cd boots, it looks like it loads the image but after that, Sam reboots and loading the cd again. I have burn the iso with UltraISO on pc at 8x.

-edit-
I have try to update the pci bus first just in case... using CDBurnerXP this time at 16x, but i have the same problem. After i press ''enter'' cd looks like it loads the image and Sam reboots...

I will try to load the last os update just to check if i have any problem with the dvd-rw.

-edit2-

Not even the os cds (beta and update1) was booting (they were hanging after kickstart loads)
and i change ide_xfer from GGGG to 0000. problem solved! both pci and u-boot updates are now in my Sam

And still wondering where the years old promised update for the AmigaOne XE is?

Don't get me wrong, It's nice that this is out. Just not feeling the love anymore.

Installed both the firmware and pci update. So far it looks good and improved graphics performance a bit as well.

Maybe if we are are lucky OS 4.1x port to classics may cause a revist of the Uboot code for AmigaOne models . Remember there was talk about doing the X86 emulator for starting the graphics cards on the classics.

@m3x

This is great news ! What speedups are included if any ?

Will we finally see a reset to default factory settings option ?

Will we see option to save/restore from boot or from Workbench for backup ?

Can firmware be remote updated ?

@Amije

Could be a boot priority issue.
Lower the priority of the bootvolume to below 5. IIRC CD-ROM has a boot priority of 5.
