Software News   Software News : A sign of life: InsanePlaya
   posted by Insane-Software on 20-Nov-2011 3:38:32 (6041 reads)
Hello Amigans!

We like to inform you that we just uploaded InsanePlaya to os4depot. Its a CD player with GUI and AHI output. Its free of charge, and free for non-commercial use.

Its GUI is somewhat simple, but complex enough to make up a useable CD player program

The plan is to use its code base for a much more complex version, featuring external GUI modules and maybe more, so that even the most serious designer could make a wonderful GUI.

As we need some more experience with its usage, we decided to give it away for free, so that AmigaOS users could test it and tell us their opinion and/or suggestions.

Have fun with InsanePlaya!

Wolfgang Hosemann

P.S.: If there should be any problem with the os4depot special license, please contact us via email.

The link needs editing as the colon is only a full stop in the ip address.
Otherwise the player works nicely on my A1xe G4 1ghz thanks.

Were glad that it works for you, we hope you like it

@moderators:

Could you edit the broken link, please? Obviously I was a bit tired

Works fine here and the quiet mode is great, a much needed feature although it's for my modern drive (less than 3 months old) I've never had a 'noisy' drive before.

Excellent work!

A few suggestions for later releases before you get to the all singing and dancing version...

Use AISS for the buttons if installed.
Make the window resizable.
Use CDDB or similar to get cd/track titles.

@Severin:

Thank you very much for your suggestions, transferred to the ToDo list

We have a MicroA1 here, with an older LG DVD-RW drive built in. This one spins up to maximum and is therefore very noisy. So we implemented the quiet option and were glad that its of use

Plays fine on my system..............

But!!

If while playing a CD, I open the readme.txt file (it opens in Multiview} and I resize the Multiview window it locks my workbench completely. CD continues playing, but total GUI freeze.

I tried the same thing with PlayCD, and no freeze, so it must be something connected to Insaneplaya.
Possibly AHI/ Multiview conflict etc. I don't know if PlayCD uses AHI, but it doesn't ock-up.

(Sorry I didn't know where to post this)

Of course before comment i tryed with a couple of CD and works perfectly, i try also this "quiet" mode but i don't see any difference here, for now i test it on my Sam Flex 800 + AmigaOS 4.1 Update 3 and a DVD-RW

Looks pretty already altrough GUI need to be finished

@swoop:

Hm, thats not nice... I cant say yet if its an InsanePlaya problem or a stability issue of your machine... which one do you use? A1SE, do I remember correctly?

I tried here with MicroA1 and SAM440ep the way you did, and I got no lockups. I noticed a quite sluggish refresh behaviour of Multiview, that is. I (Wolfgang) will investigate further, plain coding errors within InsanePlaya are not excluded Thank you very much for your report!

@samo79:

Your drive is already quiet then? Or is it one of the drives ignoring any speed related commands? I hope its a quiet one, then its normal that the "Quiet" option has no recognizable effect.

For a series of Sony laptop drives it has the opposite effect, the drive spins up for a few seconds and spins down again itself... I fear we have to introduce an abstraction layer for the handling of optical drives then.

Thanks! This is working well for me on my Sam440ep, and I'm about to use addmenu to make a ToolsDaemon-style Workbench menu item for the InsanePlaya. Insane!

@sicky:

Grrrr, Im still asleep... I knew I forgot something, but didnt remember the screenshots! I uploaded two screenshots of InsanePlaya to os4depot a minute before, after admin review (which might take a while) you will see, how it looks.

Yes, we (Niels and me, Wolfgang) hope that the site is fully up again in short term. Were very sorry for this!

Edit: typos. I get tired, again, it seems. Time for an extra strong coffee

Well to be honest i really don't know )
The DVD i use was in bundle with my Sam440, i buy all my system into a single package, DVD-RW included, what is the reason of this "quiet" option and how it works ?

@toaks:

Well, actually only me (Wolfgang) is involved Later on you might see the GUI made by Niels. I really hope we get it done soon. Well, and some new games, too...

@samo79:

Well, if you cant say, it is indeed a quiet one We used the "set speed" command of SCSI3 standard.

The reason for this option is, that there are drives out there which spin at maximum speed all the time. As a CD isnt perfectly round, there is a "wobble", which is transferred to the drive case and the computer case. This causes noise, the more bad the higher the spindle speed is.

The Quiet option tries to convince the drive to use minimum rotation speed. This minimum speed is defined by the drives manufacturer, but most of the time its 2-fold CDDA speed (300Kb/sec). If the drive obeys the "set speed" command, it will be much more quiet in operation. This way the user really can enjoy the music
