hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : SAM460Lite & AmigaOS4.1 for DjNick bounty
   posted by kas1e on 6-Jan-2012 11:22:26 (18141 reads)
Most of DjNick's music and graphics was done on Amiga back in the days, and now, he want to help AmigaOS4 to get some better design by making improved skins, icons and graphics. But its pretty hard to be working effectively on gfx design of OS and OS components, when you don't own the actual machine. So, this bountys aim is to get Nikola a sam460EX Lite motherboard & AmigaOS4.1 licence. The Sam460 is EUR 610,- excl. shipping and vat. So we should end at around EUR 850,- which is what we are trying to collect.

Do you remember the days when Amiga was popular because of our skilled artists, who contributed stunning tunes and graphics for amiga games, demos and apps? Sure you remember those days. Many of us was attracted to Amiga because of that.

One of the old-known graphic artist and musicians is DjNick (Nikola Tomic, from Serbia). He contributed for Amiga community back in the past with f.ex. non-commercial music video for a goa-trance song with the name "Warp", which features 3D animations made in LightWave. You can check that video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nD_AltKxwwo
DjNick also Composed music and sound effects for Amiga game "Capital Punishment" for Canadian Publishers "ClickBoom". It was the top Seller "beat’em-up" game in 1996, with music and SFX scores as high as 97% in some computer magazines.

Some recent work of DjNick can be seen on the freshly done AmigaOS4 site http://amigaos.net, which was done to help Hyperion to have a good looking and professional site. Just check all the links below, where you can find most of DjNick's work (music, graphics etc.).

http://www.behance.net/djnick
http://www.coroflot.com/djnick

http://www.graphicriver.net/user/djnick/portfolio?ref=djnick

The work Nikola will do as compensation for the motherboard+OS is outlined belov. Keep in mind that this will be not be official work managed by Hyperion, but 3rd party contributions from a skilled graphic artist.

1. New AOS4 themes (At least one new stylish theme).

2. New Frames for MUI (version of MUI, which will be released in AmigaOS4.2). Those frames can also be used on Morphos's MUI4, so MOS-users can contribute as well;)

3. New MUI themes (At least one new stylish theme). As we soon will have an updated MUI(4?), themes can also be used for MorphOS MUI4 as well.

4. New AOS4 backdrops (1, 2 or more).

5. New AOS4 icons for different kind of projects/games/demos/mags/apps (1, 2 or more, depends).

6. Workbench loading audio samples with female voice.

7. AmigaOS video presentations and animations on Youtube with examples what Amiga can do today.

Understand that this is the minimum work that will be done as compensation for the bounty, much more will hopefully come in the future.

With this bounty we can attract a good designer that loves Amiga computers and it's OS, please make a donation today.

Generous, but wouldn't a copy of Adobe Illustrator be a better tool for the job? Actually, color pencils and paper would be a good start.

@Trev
He need machine for aos4 not because of painting tools, but because he want to test his work in realtime. Without sending to someone his new images, then waiting why that someone will set them as he want into the gui (but you know, that gui on aos4 are not just background image). How he should check his work (when its not backdrops, but themes, frames for mui), if he will not have an os, where that mui and workbench works ?

Hi guys

Just to write few words - I will let you know when machine arrives - how it goes and will post very often various creations, graphics, videos, skins...

One of them will be reviewing lots of software fast and short, without let Youtube video watcher to feel bored. Some people who watched "What Amiga can do todays" videos on Youtube found that those videos are not very attractive and can not make non Amiga users think "Oh man, I wish Icould afford that machine".

I believe I will create several cool videos that I will upload to Youtube about what Amiga can do in 2012. (After I create some good skins first, of course, and install user-friendly surroundings with some good old programs [like Art Effect, Page Stream, MAME, WinUAE, music programs, trackers, video & audio players, browsers... this comes to my mind first].

I believe Amiga needs more informative videos. I will try to capture realtime videos via PC video card [or I hope there is some good program that works like PC's "FRAPS", that records video and audio from screen, while you work). This has to be recorded in HD resolution [720p] so people can play it full screen and see what I do.

Also I have to check all good and usable programs for music... I know there is no programs for video, but I will try to install and demo as much as possible - Blender.

Many people outside can`t imagine Blender works on Amiga! I was stunned to see it too. My brother is Blender maniac, he works great 3D models in Blender and I will let him create something quickly using Amiga version and will record that video too.

Actually, I will create something like I did for quick iPad video games for 2011 where I recorded 15 [in my opinion] best games of last year. Take a look:

Top 15 iPad Games of 2011
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rdzHEfe9gE

[Don`t ask why I put 2 my games in list] ;)

Promotion is very important ;) so people will know.

Also - I am announcing it here: I am in the making [in free time] some kind of 3D world destrucion video I am fully creating in After Effects... And in some scenes during ruining my town [I recorded with camera] - you will see few billboards in the background showing AmigaOS commercial :)

You will see it when it is finished. I think it will be cool music video with drum and bass in the background...

All best
Nick

djnick,

Your gonna find recording the screen a problem. Its a real issue atm, I think we need Gallium/Mesa or something before we can screen record without bringing the CPU to its knees.

I have however been looking online at alternatives. And frankly the only alternative I have found is expensive, but this is really simple and effect. Seems this company has NO competitors in the market place. Aside from VGA2USB recording devices they sell DVI2USB.... but check out the prices... day-light robbery!

VGA2USB LR:

Video of the more expensive model: (Lower screen solutions, but faster frame rates)

The specs on the 'cheaper' model are available here. (High screen resolutions, mixed frame rates).

@ djrikki - I have just seen those video capture hardware - but to be honest I am not impressed at all. It has low frame rate... Anything below 25fps I consider slow. Fraps on Win works amazing fast and good. I will try to connect it with PC somehow and record it this way...

Djnick

Cool! But to be specific a Tuturial style vid on Octamed ss, HD rec and other os4 tools with MIDI would get some nice attention. Even here in the States there are many guys using Atari Sts and Amigas for midi sequencing and things..

@djnick

Just downloaded FRAPS and taken a look, no options to select video input source - aka its just captures whatever is displayed on the Windows desktop.

Edit: My Dad has one of these Easycap devices, I have downloaded an application called Debut for Windows 7. Will report back results if it works lol

Meh my TV doesn't have Video out.. besides the resolutions this Easycap supports are crap.

@Vox

Wrong way around. I've already tried AmVNC Server and JollyGoodVNC on the Mac. It works, but the VNC Server is not quick enough at transmission.

Started bounty on AmigaBounty.

I hope someone wants to support it.

Have you ever thought about using a VGA to Video converter to record the Sam's output? I used to do this with my Peg2 and morphos.. I have a vga to video converter box with composite and svideo as well as overscan adjustments! Then you just record that output on a pic with a vid capture card.
