@scabit

Nothing prevents you from getting a PowerMac - people give these away for free or you can get one off ebay for a price of a couple beers.

I'll have to look into that too. I've been wanting to try out MorphOS for a long time.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Congratulations!

but

"There are also new, faster 3D drivers for Radeon cards"

is this true? I can't see any mention of that in MOS3.0 release notes page, can someone confirm that this is indeed the case?

Yes, new drivers are substantially faster, but Quake 3 and RTCW need "/r_primitives 2" in the game console to get the full advantage of them. For example on old slow PowerMac 500 MHz with Radeon 9000 I have sustained 35 fps (60 fps in closed locations) in 1024 x 768 while playing RTCW. Old drivers on the same machine delivered 15 fps sustained in 640 x 480...

Excellent news, and it's really really nice to hear about the reduced price, too!

I'll try it as soon as possible, maybe it's time to finally buy the license (I've always played with the demo because of very little spare time, but the new price it's quite tempting...)

judging by comments on shalsdot mos could take off a little better if it had wlan support , complete 3d support on powerbooks and was free of charge or at least testversion running longer than a half on hour, which is much too obvious a handicap. two or three hours would have much higher addiction factor, as a user could actually test and use his computer much more extensively before forced or rather motivated to buy a copy.

For those slashdot nerds it would be the best if MorphOS was just another Linux distribution.

I agree on wlan support but I dont see point in extending 30 minute limit for unregistered users. The biggest handicap for MorphOS is that most slashdot users dont have PowerPC hardware.

exceeding limit was just a suggestion, i think it might psychologically contribute. half an hour is really hell of short, and sounds greedy.
as for slasdot, i sense a fair amount of a prejudice as well. but similar applies to os4 or even aros to certain extent. if mos team is taking its approach seriously it has to think of how to attract such linux nerds with onlx x86 hardware, as this is the only potential audience beyond former and present amiga users. calling them stupid doesnt make a thing better.

No chance they are going to buy yet another computer only to run MorphOS.

@itix

I'm not sure that 30 minutes is enough to set up Morphos in a way it looks good and is usable (compared to modern standard) for someone who don't know Morphos. 30 minutes is enough if at the end of the install you've something ready to use a bit like OSX for example, a Dock with all applications you need, is the bare minimum with a find function in it too. The menu is hard to display using only the trackpad, keystrokes are too fast, mouse pointer too slow. Quite frankly I wanted to buy it but now I need to dive into the system and see in the end if I'll jump. I never used OS4 either, I'm wondering if you need to tweak it to make usable I hope not.
I know that all the Morphos users will scream but new users just want something usable right from the start.

I know that Papiosaur is working on a version for MOS 3, is the actual one compatible?
Thanks

@kamelit0
I don't know what is your main OS. I use also Debian Wheezy Testing with KDE4 (new Gnome is a complete fail), Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.5, all of them are pretty unusable from start, look bad, in case of Mac OS X - customization in every area is very limited.

MorphOS offers a freedom of choice, MUI is highly configurable, Ambient is a really good file manager, it has a very good mimetype system, default actions for files are configured from start for almost every essential program in MorphOS. When it comes to default skin and mui config, i don't like it, should be more toned and more clear.

There are a lot of people who use a default setting and the only thing they change is a wallpaper, are they MorphOS target? No, MorphOS is for enthusiasts.
