software OS4   software OS4 : AmiCygnix V1.1 released
posted by CygnusEd on 21-Jun-2012 9:16:42 (5438 reads)
A new version of the AmiCygnix packages AmiCygnix-Base and AmiCygnix-Tools are now available on OS4-Depot. An existing installation of AmiCygnx 1.0 can be updated - older software package can still be used.
Upcoming AmiCygnix software will depend on this new version.

AmiCygnix is a Unix environment, which makes it easy to port Unix software with or without a GUI.

The main enhancements in the base package:
  • Support of programs compiled with GTK+ 2.24 and GTK+ 3.x.

  • A new (experimental) display driver, which opens the X11 display in a normal intuition window on the workbench.

  • The X server can now be launched several times without problems. So you can now - for example - launch several applications separately on the workbench.

  • Upcoming software and included programs in the "Software" drawer provides a new script for a standalone start in an own window or screen. A special version of myX11Setup is included for this.

  • A new icon theme for AmiCygnix programs in AmigaOS 4.1 style.

  • All workbench icons in these packages are now in AmigaOS 4.1 style.

  • The previous version of AmiCygnix could not be installed on partitions formatted with JXFS. This bug is now solved.

  • The optional tools package contains newer versions of the so far included software and a new settings editor for the desktop background (all compiled with GTK+ 2.24):

  • The file manager "ROX-Filer 2.10"

  • The web browser "NetSurf 2.8"

  • The text editor "Leafpad 0.8.18.1" with UTF-8 support

  • The image viewer "GPicView 0.2.2"

  • The PDF viewer "Xpdf 3.03"

  • The settings editor for GTK+ 2 and 3 "LXAppearance 0.5.1"

  • The settings editor for the Openbox window manager "ObConf 2.0.3"

  • The settings editor for the desktop background "Gsetroot 1.1"

I see that it's pretty easy to create a standalone script using an old one.
I just started Gimp on its own WB window. It opens new possibilities.

Now that you probably rewrote a big part of the X11 server, I hope that you can optimise it.

    Thanks for your continued work.

    Brilliant update!

AmiCygnix on Workbench feature works well here on a 440flex with Radeon9250 - nice that the AmiCygnix window can also be iconified.

So far seems to run a bit quicker and resizing/moving windows seems a bit smoother.

    Thanks for the update!

Abiword now works here. Thank you!

I would request the Installer script to use FONTS: not SYS:Fonts when accessing fonts. I think it's safe to assume that assign is here to stay.

Where do we report problems with AmiCygnix? I have noticed some problem with the new prefs program like these:

myX11Setup starts in German if I move it to SYS:Prefs. Snoopy shows that it is looking in PROGDIR: and LOCALE: for it's catalogs. It probably should look in Cygnix: too.

When myX11Setup opens in English the gadgets hang over the right border by a lot. The default window size should be larger for English. Can the window size be saved?

Snoopy shows myX11Setup trying to open a port continuously when the window is active. I have thousands of lines in Snoopy reading:
    myX11Setup : o.k. = [exec] FindPort("XGeekPort.0") [15uS]

    @hotrod

Did you install the tools package too or only the base package? Without the tools package, the default browser is "Sys:Utilities/OWB/OWB".
If you've installed the tools package, please try to launch NetSurf by calling "nsgtk" in an Amiga shell. Maybe you get an error message.

Basically it's not a good idea to move parts of the AmiCygnix installation to other places. This was never planned. But if you want to do so, please copy the catalogs to "LOCALE:".

Please report problems to the author of the program "Michael Christoph" (http://meicky-soft.de).

    @all

I hope you don't have too much problems with the new version . It was tested intensively, but AmiCygnix is a complex thing.

Will we see Gimp 2.8 in near future or is it hard to port to amiCygnix ?

installed and working fine here, thanks Edgar

it's great to drag screens when I'm working with GNumeric & need something off my WB. Though i did notice that with this new update dragging screens within AmiCygnix is quit a bit less smooth?

The AmiCygnix-based programs are some of the best available for Amiga NG. I'm looking forward to installing it as soon as I get a chance.
