Announcement   Announcement : Bounty to port DTP software Scribus to AmigaOS 4
   posted by DiscreetFX on 25-Jul-2013 0:36:47 (8759 reads)
An ongoing issue with the mass acceptance of AmigaOS 4 is the lack of high end modern professional software applications. The Amiga's software library is impressively large, but most of the applications have not been updated or modernized. Some end users have paid for updates to software that have never come or have incomplete versions.

A wealth of software exists in the open source world that uses the Qt framework. Qt is a cross-platform complete development framework with tools designed to streamline the creation of stunning native applications and amazing user interfaces for desktop, embedded and mobile platforms. Industry-Leading Application Development with One Framework Qt's cross-platform full framework and tools enables developers to target various desktop, embedded, mobile and real-time operating systems with one code base. Qt brings freedom to the developer saving development time, adding efficiency and ultimately shortening time to market.

DiscreetFX has setup a bounty to get the professional package Scibus ported to AmigaOS 4.

http://discreetfx.com/Scribus.html

This modern powerful and easy to use Desktop Publishing software will help fill a needed gap in AmigaOS 4 software suite. DiscreetFX has placed $1000 in the bounty to get it started and will add $100 per month for the next 12 months to keep development interest going.

This is a pay for performance bounty meaning bounty payouts can be given before bounty is complete in four installments. If you can prove you have completed 25% of the work then 25% of the bounty will be paid to you. Completed 50% of the work get 50% of the bounty, and so on. After 12 months if no coder has contributed code to the Scribus Bounty it will self destruct.

We are impressed with Qt and envision it bringing many modern powerful productivity titles to AmigaOS 4. Scribus can be one of the first, but certainly not the last. This bounty is also available to MorphOS coders, but more work would be required since MorphOS does not have a port of the QT framework.

He's back. And he needs some money !

Sorry, I won't give anything since I do not trust you at all (remember AmiZilla ?).

I'd rather give to this bounty if it was on AmigaBounty for example.

@K-L

And no one asked you to contribute to it. You make a great point though, it should be hosted on AmigaBounty. We have no interest in being the keeper of the bounty and would rather it was done elsewhere. AmigaBounty.net is probably the best place for it. We only want the bounty to succeed and prefer not to be the administrator of it.

@DiscreetFX

So you are not asking for others to donate to this bounty then?

I can sympathise with K-L as someone who made a donation (albeit small) to the AmiZilla bounty which was never returned after the bounty was wound up.

@gtmooya

Correct, I'm bummed to hear that K-L may have not received his bounty back. He should contact me ASAP so he can get it. I hired a part time accountant to sort out AmiZilla refunds in 2009 and thought everyone had been taken care of.

No, you're not. You never properly informed the donors that the bounty would be cancelled, you're perfectly aware that most donors never got their money back.

At what mail address? I'd like to hand that out to others aswell.

Here goes cgutjahr again on his one man hate DFX campaign. It gets old after a while. Kind of a strange crusade you have there but whatever. K-L can send me a PM or contact via the link below.

http://www.discreetfx.com/contact.html

Not a very hard link to find now was it?

I just pointed out that you never informed the Amizilla donors properly that the bounty was cancelled. Are you denying that?

I was asking for an e-mail address, I'd prefer that to a Flash based contact form.

@cgutjahr

All AmiZilla donors were informed when the bounty ended so you were spreading misinformation. I just PMed you an e-mail address. You do realize the AmiZilla bounty ended several years ago right? I went out of my way to help people with this and refunds were given with interest. Paypal fees were not deducted on refunds which means DFX lost money on each transaction. We went above and beyond to do the right thing so don't spread misinformation please.

@DiscreetFX

Good idea about the bounty.

@Everyone

Lets keep things positive there have been a number of failed bounties in the past as well as a number of successful ones.

My suggestion would be to get http://www.power2people.org to handle the bounty as they have handled a good number of successful bounties in the past and if the source code is kept open if would also allow for porting to other Amiga platform if and when they also get QT support.

Why not a bounty to convince Deron to put more time on PageStream5 and release it for AmigaOS4.x
Instead of beginning a new construction site, lets focus on what we already have.

Aren`t they obliged to do OS4 version since they do kind of pre-sell it even today?

Oh, but you did. The very nature of your submission is asking anyone and everyone to donate. You don't have to hand out personal engraved invitations for folks to feel they have been asked.

I'd like for it to succeed too. What steps have you taken to move it to AmigaBounty?

When you are finished moving it, please let me know so we can remove this announcement or edit it to reflect reality.

Thanks,

Great! When it is accepted (I assume it will be) just PM me your edit of this announcement so we can reflect the change and move the announcement to the top of the page.

Thanks,

Coz Deron doesn't give a damn for years? Yes Scribus won't be 100 % Amiga application but it is open source software developed outside the small Amiga world so the development will be faster and more steady (unlike Deron's)

@DiscreetFX

nice initiative, but please move it to Amiga bounty ASAP and remove the "This is a pay for performance bounty meaning bounty payouts can be given before bounty is complete in four installments." part, so it is more transparent and not discourage others to donor...

Whe I refer to Amizilla, I only wanted to explain that my refunding was complicated (and it was given to TimberWolf bounty anyway).

All in all, I got my donation back.
