Announcement   Announcement : Bounty to port DTP software Scribus to AmigaOS 4
   posted by DiscreetFX on 25-Jul-2013 1:36:47 (8787 reads)
An ongoing issue with the mass acceptance of AmigaOS 4 is the lack of high end modern professional software applications. The Amiga's software library is impressively large, but most of the applications have not been updated or modernized. Some end users have paid for updates to software that have never come or have incomplete versions.

A wealth of software exists in the open source world that uses the Qt framework. Qt is a cross-platform complete development framework with tools designed to streamline the creation of stunning native applications and amazing user interfaces for desktop, embedded and mobile platforms. Industry-Leading Application Development with One Framework Qt's cross-platform full framework and tools enables developers to target various desktop, embedded, mobile and real-time operating systems with one code base. Qt brings freedom to the developer saving development time, adding efficiency and ultimately shortening time to market.

DiscreetFX has setup a bounty to get the professional package Scibus ported to AmigaOS 4.

http://discreetfx.com/Scribus.html

This modern powerful and easy to use Desktop Publishing software will help fill a needed gap in AmigaOS 4 software suite. DiscreetFX has placed $1000 in the bounty to get it started and will add $100 per month for the next 12 months to keep development interest going.

This is a pay for performance bounty meaning bounty payouts can be given before bounty is complete in four installments. If you can prove you have completed 25% of the work then 25% of the bounty will be paid to you. Completed 50% of the work get 50% of the bounty, and so on. After 12 months if no coder has contributed code to the Scribus Bounty it will self destruct.

We are impressed with Qt and envision it bringing many modern powerful productivity titles to AmigaOS 4. Scribus can be one of the first, but certainly not the last. This bounty is also available to MorphOS coders, but more work would be required since MorphOS does not have a port of the QT framework.

I find it a bit odd that DiscreetFX should (intentionally?) hint at their own past problems (e.g. no Amiga version of Aladdin 4D v6). While I'm not advocating they pretend it never happened, it does seem strange for them to intentionally raise that issue again despite not having anything good to say about it...

As far as THIS bounty is concerned, I'm a bit worried about the "performance bounty" part. I'm really not sure how someone can 'prove' they have done 25% of the work, when 25% of a port will probably be non-functional or at least useless & buggy. Paying for an incomplete version didn't exactly go well for Aladdin 4D v6 either, did it?

So far I don't see much evidence that DiscreetFX have learnt from their (many) past mistakes

It seems you'd need tk/tkinter first... also, you may want to specify which version of the software as the latest needs QT5.

+1

A complex task should be splitted in different bounties that are precise defined and exactly checkable and approvable. "X% working" is not a good definition for a bounty.

@ChrisH, OlafS25 & Nibunnoichi

You make very valued points. Thanx a bunch for your feedback. I'll update the bounty requirements to be more clear.

@discreetfx

Have you checked the Scribus dependencies first before suggesting this bounty? IMHO it will be a giant step to even get all the basic pieces we need.

@Trixie
I often wonder if DiscreetFX do *any* real research (and/or discuss with people knowledgable on the relevant subject) before making these "news announcements". If it was me, I'd email people first or start a thread to discuss options, and only IF things looked positive would I even consider doing a big announcement. Rather more work, and a lot less fun, but you're also much less likely to end-up with egg on your face.

Since that never seems to happen, it does lend credence (rightly or wrongly) to the idea they are doing it more for the attention (and/or temporary boost to their sales), and are less interested in the actual end results. If that's wrong, then they really ought to put in a bit more thought & discussion before any announcements. We still have a lot of smart people left, and I'm sure they'd be willing to discuss things.

Apparently, Andreas thinks that DiscreetFX owes him money. If I had to guess, I'd say DFX had some advertisement printed in Amiga Future and didn't pay the bills. Just guessing though.

We shouldn't speculate in public because it may be wrong, but there is something in the air.
