Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Small utility that may increase performance on Sam460/AmigaOne 500
posted by gtmooya on 14-Dec-2014 11:33:41 (2455 reads)
This utility works on both Sam460ex and Sam460cr.

Once L2 cache write is enabled, Ragemem will report around 35% speed increase in the L2 WRITE32/WRITE64 tests, and some applications may see improved performance too (for example 3-5% speed increase in MPlayer with some videos).

Download: L2cache-1.0.lha

You didn't report that this utility could damage the files on your hd, so the suggestion is to activate it just before performing an activity for which the L2 cache would be useful (i.e. watching a film) then reset your system

The news is taken from ACube's website. Anyone using this utility should make sure they read the included readme file first.

Nice, but don't complain to me if things starts to crash in LiveForIt-MPlayer.

This is a perfect example of something that should be built into the OS. The HAL and chipset drivers for the SAM460's SOC should have the knowledge built in of exactly when it's safe to turn on the level 2 cache, and turn it on and off transparently. Then users can get the best performance without worrying about accidentally trashing their data. It's great that this utility exists, but I hope it's meant to be just a temporary measure until the next set of OS4 patches.

@ Codesmith

I heard from other users it is not matter of the OS.

AMCC PPC CPU cache L2 is bugged at circuit level so it could corrupt data read/write once enabled

I hope that what I heard was wrong info and it is only a matter of software issues.

This is great news for SAM board owners. Disabling caches on classic Amigas or the trusty PC has a profound effect on performance so I would guess the difference will be noticeable.
