software OS4   software OS4 : A-EON acquires exclusive RadeonHD ownership

A-EON acquires exclusive RadeonHD ownership
Underlining our commitment to supporting AmigaOS graphics development

Cardiff 28th July, 2016

A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased to announce that is has acquired exclusive ownership of the RadeonHD source and binary code for AmigaOS 4.x. The agreement with developer Hans de Ruiter transfers all existing and future RadeonHD intellectual property rights to A-EON Technology and underscores our commitment to supporting AmigaOS graphics drivers for our AmigaOne systems and compatible hardware.

Over the past 5 years we have funded the continuous development and improvement of the RadeonHD driver under an exclusive licensing and distribution agreement with Hans de Ruiter. During this period, numerous updates have been released and the latest versions of the driver support a wide range of RadeonHD and Radeon Rx graphics cards.

Most recently the RadeonHD driver has become an integral part of the ever growing Enhancer Software distribution for AmigaOS4 platform.

The main features of the RadeonHD driver includes:

* Support for a wide range of RadeonHD graphics cards from the RadeonHD 2xxx-7xxx series through to more recent Rx series
* Provides 2D graphics acceleration, including compositing for allsupported graphics cards under AmigaOS 4.1
* Supports output via VGA, DVI & HDMI
* It's 3D ready and provides access to the GPU for the development of 3D drivers through Warp3D SI and Warp3D Nova
* Support for AmigaOne AmigaOS next-generation machines and compatible models.

We asked Hans de Ruiter for his comments on the RadeonHD technology transfer. He said: "A-EON have already been funding continued development of the RadeonHD driver, so giving them complete ownership was the logical next step. Ownership gives them complete freedom to continue its development regardless of my involvement. I'm confident that its future is secure in their hands."

The acquisition of the RadeonHD rights, together with our ongoing work on Warp3D Nova and Warp3D-SI and our financial support for the complimentary development of OpenGLES2 underlines our ongoing commitment to supporting AmigaOS graphics development.

Specifications & Requirements*

Support for most graphics cards in the RadeonHD & RX series including:-

* R520 (X1300-X1950 series)
* R700 (HD4000 series)
* Evergreen (HD5000 series)
* Northern Islands (HD6000 series)
* Southern Islands (HD7000 series)
* Radeon R5 230/235/235x
* Radeon R7 250x/265 series
* Radeon R9 270/270x/280/280x

*AmigaOS 4.1 FE or newer recommended

little bit worried by this part
"Ownership gives them complete freedom to continue its development regardless of my involvement. I'm confident that its future is secure in their hands."

Does that mean the developer is thinking of leaving the Amiga scene, if so I think that would be a bit of blow, its hard to get such talented developers involved in the Amiga world.

but the good part is that it does keep saying support for RadeonHD & RX, which sounds as if support for the new RX 4xx range will be supported which would be nice.

Anyway hope this is good news and that development continues.

@amigang

It's definitely open to interpretation but it does sound like they are assuming control rather than just securing exclusive rights to the code.

Good news?

I thought Radeon HD driver supports also R600 cards (HD 2000/3000), press release mentions only R500 and R700+.

@cgutjahr
My guess: Given that Hans has previously said he has limited time for Amiga developments, this gives A-Eon the freedom to contract someone else to work on Radeon HD stuff (if they wish).

@A-EON

"*AmigaOS 4.1 FE or newer recommended"
Where can I get a newer version than 4.1 FE?

I haven't ordered a new graphics card yet (due to lack of Warp 3D programs/games)...

Still no chance of Warp 3D for the older cards?

Since many game dev use Vulkan instead of DirectX 12, is it possible to be Vulkan compatible later on?

@kamelit0

Warp3D Nova already uses the SPIR-V shader language the same a Vulkan and many modern concepts shared between the both.

@Nicsoft

Probably more cost effective for A-Eon to do a special bundle for Sam460ex with the Enhancer software and a Southern Islands graphics card at a "ridiculously Low" price than to have some one spend time on Warp3D Nova support for the Radeon HD 4000 series cards.

Warp3D Nova support for HD 5000 and HD 6000 cards could get A-Eon some Sam440ep users though.

Would buy too the newer version of Final for the XE and maybe stick a new graphics card if the 9250 as recommended could be replaced?

@Spectre660

I don't know if the A1 SE/XE has an upper limit on what cards can be used so it could be beneficial to users of those systems too if Southern Islands cards don't work with the A1 version of uboot.

There is a possibility that R9 cards from MSI may work with the Sam440 since they have a dual bios which is activated by a physical switch on the card. It may be the case that switching to the legacy bios will allow older hardware like the Sam440 recognise the cards.

http://event.msi.com/2014/vga/Hybrid_BIOS/

I don't know if there any any Sam440 or SE/XE owners near me but if there are I have such a card that could be tested but they'd have to pay for the PCI to PCIe x16 bridge and flexi-riser.

@PR

You can only add Radeon X and HD cards to the the 33Mhz slots in an A1 so you'd be able to retain the 9250 for a dual monitor setup if you wanted.

I wish someone with and A1 and Sam460/X1000 or a user group would get on with it and test out SI with the A1 to confirm if they work or not.

If I knew they were confirmed to work I'd just recommend getting a PEX8112 bridge card and the same low profile R7 250 that Acube sell but as it currently, you'd be spending over €100 with disappointment and frustration being a very possible outcome.
If you're willing to risk your money to play the guinea pig then at least you know the option is there.

I've been looking at some new 4k monitors. Does anyone know which graphics cards support 4k resolution??

The Radeon SI cards are recognized by the Sam440ep-flex but something causes the driver to fail.

@Spectre660

It may well be Uboot related, maybe m3x from ACube can help?

That version of RadeonHD is very old, have you tried it with a newer version?

@Rob

Thanks for the info. Then we wait for the proper card and the old fixed gets some new power like the pc did with NVidia.

Just info when the drivers are available and for Radeon xxx?

I hear we are getting some net programs + Speed with the GFX card, Hopefully heard right;)
