Announcement   Announcement : Amiga Calls for User Groups
posted by HMetal on 17-Dec-2003 5:53:28 (7300 reads)
from http://os.amiga.com

Community has always been the backbone of the Amiga platform; indeed, without it, the platform would have folded long ago. With AmigaOS4.0 approaching release, the community has taken a lead once again, with dedicated individuals and user groups throughout the world working to show AmigaOS4.0 running on AmigaOnes.

Amiga, Inc. is now at a stage where we are looking to bring the user groups together into a more formal forum, providing feedback to Amiga, Inc. on how best it can support the user groups whilst also allowing the user groups to be able to bind themselves together in a mutual organisation for self help and support.

This new organisation will be a crucial element in the growth of the Amiga platform as AmigaOS4.0 is released and the community begins to expand. We are thus making a call to all user groups to submit their details in the form below so that we can begin the construction of this organisation and get the resources in place to service it.

I think it's great too, it's about time that Amiga got the community involved, and now that they have a product almost released it's time to gather the troops for battle

We shall overcome...

Well, when I get AOS4, and got it up and running, I plan to contact the local newspaper, and offer them to show it.

For me, it feels like now or never, if the Amiga shall rice again, it is the AOS4 that's gotta do it!

I don't think I've got the patience to wait another 10 years if the AOS4 fails.

"...like in the good old days" ?

...with such a price ?! So what if the system is ok? Almost nobody in central/eastern Europe, Asia, Africa S.America (?) have got A1. In Poland for example AFAIK NOBODY's got IT !!! -because of IT's PRICE - for now it's a hardware for total fanatics - and amount of them is limited...

AmigaOne hardware is expensive... yes. It is right, you can't think that an Amiga has the same price of a wintel pc. And if all think like you, amiga will never come back. I don't know if you aid true thing but here in Italy there is A LOT OF AMIGAONE, and A1 is selling very good.... Probably you are not amigan.... so see you.

There was no need for that, was there? And he has a point, you know. Do you honestly believe that Amiga will return if the price of the AmigaOne remains so high? And it is extremely high, whatever the reasons.

Some devoted amigans will probably pay that kind of money, but if you want ex-Amigans, who are now used to dirt cheap pc's, to return, then it's not going to work at that price.

My 2 pence worth.

In answer to the above, yes the hardware is a bit expensive, but thats economies of scale for you. Also the A500+ wasn't such a bargin at ~£400 when it went on sale.

We are a very small niche market, and the community does have an important role in keeping the [boing] ball rolling.

I think its a good idea getting your local paper to do a small article on the A1+OS 4.0. Something like the Lifestyle/Entertainment section. It gives them something to fill up there paper with and the Amiga some coverage.

It may be a total disaster trying to brin the Amiga back, but unless we try, we will never know will we?

There is not a single AmigaONE in Hungary, so bravely add it to Poland, and exclude me and all hungarian Amiga users from your "true amigan" list as well. So see you.

Infact i say probably you are not an amigan.. and it is correct.

The A1 model now available are ONLY for Amigans, not for returning ex-amigans. WE must support the comunity, helping it to grow! So in the near future people that say: "Ahhh to expensive!!!!" will have a cheaper A1 version.

Mmmm I already replied. I have not said "true amigan". Only amigans, because who have waited for years a new amiga model is going to buy or already have bought an AmigaOne. I was a student less than a year ago, and now i have only little money.... buy i ordered my AmigaOne.

IT IS RIGHT AND NATURAL that A1 is expensive, it is stupid to come to amiga site and say "too expensive". See the MAC hardware, they sell hundred times amiga but they are expensive. So there is no reason for start a litigation about it.

WHO KNOWS and WHO want to support the comunity can buy a A1, IF Aiga will grow in the near future we'll have cheaper A1 model that can be bought by old returning amigans and new users.

I don't want to be aggressive, i'm not english so try to understand my posts and calm down please.

In fact, I'm rather interested in the Blizzard version of OS4. So there's little need to argue about the AmigaONE, as there are luckily other options available.

ikir's reply was a bit harsh.

But it is the ppl who are willing to pay high prices for what they want who pave the say for the less well off to get what they want in alot of cases.
I wonder if the ppl who forked out big to buy the first A1000 had not that there would of ever been the A500.

I remember paying 2200 german marks for my Amiga 2000, in 1989. I had just finished millitary service and bought it from the money I got there. It was a LOT of money for me.

And remember that there is always the Cyberstorm/Blizzard version of OS 4.

An returning amigan can buy (or already have) a 1200 or a 4000 with Blizzard Cybersotrm or a new SharkPCC. Anyway A1 is the best solution and if you like amiga and amigaos you can buy one also if it isn't cheap. Don't you think?

If yout think pc hardware often are cheap also in the components and often brokes, and again it will be old in 6 months. I work in the computer world so i can see it in evidence. Buy a good platform with a good hardware or buy 2 pcs in a year

And as Rogue said Amiga wasn't cheap in the past, but anyway was the most used computer. Do you remember the Amiga3000 price?

;) I've got 2 classic Amigas [still using].
I'm doing games, hope on OS4 too, if there will be "normal" openGL & SDL implementation...

Just want to say, that in all the regions of the world I mentioned above, the A1 costs about 8-2 [!!!] average salaries [depends on the country], while in i.e. Italy it's about 1, right?
Times are little bit different now than those "old good"...
There are lot of talented Amiga [or ex-Amiga] developers on the world, these potential will be lost if they don't get new Amiga hardware [I mean Amiga in normal price] - and it's rather pointless to make i.e. some games on 603/200 & permedia2 or wandering/calculate how it'll work on A1- is that the return of Amiga?

Saying realistically, the price of A1 should fall down at least to the price of pegasos2 [if it exist ;)]...

i.e in Poland is about ~ 15 Pegasos users. If Eyetech doesn't lower the price [but why should do this, while A1 is (almost) the best selling ppc platform ;( ] , it screw up all the eastern/southern markets.

It'll sound brutal, but I wish Amiga inc have more than 1 hardware manufacturer partner...

The A1000 wasn't cheap (it was good value for money, but definitely it was a lot of money)

When Amiga4000 was released in Spain it was quite expensive... but people with less money could buy the A1200 version, a lot of cheaper...

Don't worry, in a few months the AmigaOne Lite will be here. The difference between this and the past promises is that we already have the high-end model available.

The PegasosG3 is quite interesting, AmigaOneLite will probably match his price...

If you buy your A1/G4 in Forefront it costs 615? and a Pegasos2/G4 should cost 500?, so there's not so much price difference. And the difference is that the AmigaOne IS available.

When OS4 and One Lite arrive it will be more interesting for most of people.

Think in the A1000... it was a lot of money and the people who bought it made the A500 and the A2000 possible.

Hi rolpho. Now i understand what you mean. This is a problem but Eyetech can't make miracles (yet?). If we are lucky we can hope in a lower price from start of 2004.

Pegasos? hardware selled at the price of production doesn't is a good example

Mmmm Why don't you try to win an AmigaOne playing freeciv? here at AW

PS: Agree with Crumb

More than one hardware partner would also mean less money per partner in sales and none would benefit from that. Its bad enough our little market have been divided amongst pegasos and amigaone buyers.

Besides, i believe the prices will go down with more sales and perhaps the mini-itx is the solution for that.

Sweet, two more games just came with the mail, time for some fun.
