Events   Events : Summary of AmigaOS4 presentation in Bremen
posted by MikeB on 8-Mar-2004 21:16:29 (7760 reads)
At the "Computer&Video-Börse" fair in Bremen, Germany, Hyperion developers Hans-Jörg and Thomas Frieden presented the latest version of AmigaOS4 and answered relating questions. Read more for an English summary of Thorsten Mampel's contribution to the German Amiga-News.de portal. First pictures from this event are available here.

Edited by DaveP - innaccuracies now italicized

With the current version of AmigaOS4 the pre-release is expected to become available to all AmigaOne owners within the upcoming 14 days. Currently there is still an error with regard to the interaction between USB and IDE. This will soon get fixed.

All desired functionality has already been integrated into AmigaOS4. Currently work is done on merging a PPC native version Picasso96 with the OS, but the 68k version already works. Also Warp3D works and this was proved by demonstrating Frog noise and a demo version of Freespace.

The USB-Stack is implemented and works. Keyboard, Mice and Joysticks should function, but the MassStorage-Class for USB-Sticks and Memory cards is still missing.

The Onboard-Sound for the AmigaOne does not work due to a hardware failure. Currently this means that people would need an additional soundcard. The MicroA1 does not share this problem. Support for the SoundBlaster128 is under development.

Bluetooth and SCSI support are planned for later versions.

The default 68k-Emulator is currently an Interpreter. The JIT-Compiler Petunia already functions but its automatic use is yet to be implemented.

The integration of the Forefront driver system still isn't completed. The test systems used Voodoo3 graphic cards because these are currently more stable than systems equipped with Radeon cards.

GRex support could not be converted because important developer information from its manufacturer is missing (apparently due to lack of interest on their part).

No final release date has been announced. The time needed for pending Beta-tests and problem solving cannot be determined with certainty.

If that is the case, how can the pre-release be shipped within 14 days?

Petunia still not in place and Picasso not PPC. I don't dare to ask about SNAP. No sign of the Cyberstorm version either, which was hoped to be a summer 2003 release, even by the developers (i don't want to read Fleecy's column again from last Total Amiga where he hoped for a release party before the end of 2003).

With all respect, i do wonder if it will come out one day Im my mind, i have given up on it for quite a while already, but one still keeps hope. I do understand the reasons and i do understand the difficult situation and i have a lot of respect for the whole OS4 team, but at the end of the day, it's the result that counts.

Will there never be any good news?

I never read about Bluetooth support in AOS4 before. Great news! I want to connect my A1 to my Sony Ericsson cell phone.

The driver is as integrated as drivers go, in that it currently on AmigaOne uses the same .card file the voodoo does, and other than that you copy the .chip file to the proper location. The driver had some bugs, one or two of which were showstoppers but the list of Radeon driver bugs I've seen considered as holding back anything have now been fixed. There's still some more stuff to do, but this is a "prerelease", and things will be a lot better for final release, and it's now reasonable for normal use.

Ha!

Calm down a little! :)

It says at the bottom: 'No final release date has been announced. The time needed for pending Beta-tests and problem solving cannot be determined with certainty.'

Does this mean a final release date for the pre-release, OS4 or both?

If the pre-release is out in 14 days I will be happier than a big bag full of very happy things! :).

I will have to think very hard about not buying an AmigaOne and breaking my promise to not purchase until full release!

I wish Hyperion all the best and hope they hit pre-release soon now!

@z5: Will there never be any good news?

What about this? The first release of the beta CD was on January 24th, when it was released to all the betatesters - all independent testers like me and many other regulars on this forum. A number of problems occurred with video cards - there are many variants of them and obviously the developers don't have all of them to test.

That was only six weeks ago. Since then the video card problems have been fixed, the CD installation process has been improved and it's just about ready for widespread release.

I call that good news - but then I'm in a position to see the progress, day by day. You don't hear the betatesters complaining about lack of progress.

Don't take these 14 days for what it looks like.

From Ben Hermans (Hyperionmp) :

Quote:

Those two weeks refer to the amount of time required to get to gold master status.

it doesn't include production time of at least 10 business days.

In this thread.

That means atleast 24 days plus delivery time. And don't be surprised if that ends up being a month away.

So don't come back here complaining about you not having the Prerelese CD in a CD-ROM drive near you in two weeks. Spouting out messages about "they lied!" or whatever.

/Björn

Now that sounds as a decent status report - why couldn't we have something like this all along?

@TonyW

This I why I think a regular status update to the public would be a good thing.

Note that I never every said anything like what is said in this report. The reason we where using Voodoo's was

- I wanted to run some Warp3D demove
- The install CD I sent to Vesalia had the latest radeon.chip but only an age old radeon.card on it.

I never said anything about "integration", since, as you pointed out, there is nothing to "integrate".

But then, I never said anything about "two weeks" either.
