Great news!

OS4 almost finished. An update #4 in a few days. Several new hardware projects – both low-end and high-end. OS4 running on a PDA...

I only I could buy a computer to run OS4 – even on update #3!

But I'll continue waiting...

Great Work Hyperion!

Great news!

we got update 4# comming next month, scsi drivers, more hardware to run OS4 on
and my personal favorite CELL, coz these chips and tird party hardware (like ps3) will come available the next year(s) and multicore cpu's are the future in my opinion.

all in all good news and i'm looking forward to finally getting my own hands on an OS4 machine sitting proud at my desk!

Its a good job the the questons channel was not posted as well, it was mostly flooded with requests to port OS4 to pegasos, classic 68k & X86 hardware.

wizz.

Hyperion claim that OS4 has no hardware to run on and also claim that there is a PDA which runs OS4. So there is some hardware.

Clearly by the time OS4 hits the shelves the PDA in question will highly likely be on the road to being obsolete so would it not make sense to release the complete package? PDA with OS4 installed as standard.

IMHO, it's not only great news.
I'm quite dissapointed.
OS4 is almost finished but won't be released cause of non avalaible hardware they said.

Why don't they make a release for Amiga classics?
There are plenty around and this could provide them some additionnal cash for the next stage.

It could help us waiting for new hardware.

Probably because it is "Classic" hardware. In order for OS4 to move forward, there has to be modern hardware available to run it on. Surely that's the point of the new OS.

If you look historically, OS3.5 & 3.9 did nothing to improve Amiga sales - there was no (new) hardware available.

Hmm, my opinion is split into two parts.

One the one hand, technical issues sound fine so far. OS 4 running on a PDA is quite interesting in order to show it to potential manufacturers. There's always something one might miss though, of course...

One the other hand, things like that bother me:
"QUESTION: Who will be responsible for the OS4 marketing. We all know how poor C= marketing was after the 64 was released with there be a hi profile scheme ?"
"Erm, good question. I am a developer, it certainly isn't going to be me :)"

Although that doesn't imply that nobody is responsible for the job, I have the feeling that the non-technical issues are neglected. Of course, the Friedens cannot comment on anything but the software part of OS 4, but strategic issues such as business development and marketing are at least as important.

I agree it’s dead boring waiting for the OS4 release – especially since it's now mainly delayed 'cause of lack of new hardware. But even if it would be possible to make a classic release in the meantime it's probably a wise decision not doing so.

Hyperion needs all the marketing hype they can get when releasing OS4 just to make it take off or even survive at all. If they split the release in two phases they loose the one time opportunity to get good press coverage (and internet site reporting). Most non-Amigans wouldn't care at all of a niche OS released on completely outdated platform (i.e. classic Amigas). If you need special hardware to run Amiga OS4 and you cannot even buy it (new) there is no story to tell. Unfortunately.

*sighs*

It has been CLEARLY said: Any final release of OS4 will create a certain momentum. You WILL see that on sites like The Register, Heise, etc.

Now, this momentum should lead to sales. When something's in the news, people are interested for it. But what can we tell them ? No, OS4 can't be bought yet because there is no hardware ?

And don't tell me "classic Amiga": Where can you buy those ? Or PPC accelerators ?

No, sorry, but releasing OS4 now would be nonsense. When hardware would finally be available, OS4 would already be "old news", and thus "awareness" would already have died down. The only sensible approach is to release OS4 _with readily available hardware_.

And, to answer the PDA thing above, this includes DESKTOP hardware. PDA's are a special case of hardware.

"Release it for the classic"

Well there you have the same problem. You might as wel release it for the A1. You see new people wanna have it but there is no hardware to buy to run it on. Oh yes on E-bay you might find some. No hardware for sale means also for the classic.

I see EntilZha posted about it.

Erm, yeah, exactly, and that is what I did... I don't exactly know what other answer you expected, and I don't exactly know why you find it bothersome.

Sorry, but ask any engineer of Microsoft about marketing, and you get a "shove off". Hans-Jörg and me are programmers, _NOT_ PR guys. We don't handle marketing.

You probably overestimate our position here: We are developing parts of OS4... _tiny_ parts I should add. I have next to no inside knowledge in AmigaOS components I don't develop. I know exec, but that's it. I couldn't care less about the inner working of, for example, Roadshow, since I know it's in good hands. It's just not my job.

OTOH, I don't know ANYTHING about marketing. I know that it's taken care of, but I don't know who is going to be involved... probably Hyperion, maybe Amiga... I just don't know, since it's absolutely not my job to know.

I *think* I said this in the introduction. Release it now, and all the hype and momentum you might gain, all the publicity on mainstream websites, is gone within two or three days because you cannot buy the hardware anywhere.

I don't see how this could be that hard to understand.

Thx Hyperion!

Great Work!

I for sure need the SCSI driver! I do have a lot of SCSI devices from my A3000T.

I can't wait to see AOS4 on a PDA!

Best wishes for 2006 to all AOS4 developers!

As I stated, I know that you're not responsible for marketing etc. (although in smaller companies domains tend to overlap) and I didn't expect any deep insights in strategy - in fact making that public would be kind of stupid. What bothered me was that the answer sounded like "Oh, marketing! I knew we forgot something." Something like: "Please ask Mr. XYZ concerning this issue." would have helped keeping me hushed. Since you now clearly stated that it's taken care of I regard this case as closed.
