Idea #1: In wb3.9 you changed the icon dragging it over the info window, would it be possible to allow the user to drop in an image, and the info program would convert it to a real icon using datatypes?
Idea #2: It would be quite comfortable and users wouldn't complain about not being able to use PNGs... another nice feature would be that if workbench finds a "XXXXX.info" file and it doesn't have a .info structure (it's not a real icon) it should try to display it with datatypes (or convert it directly to a real icon). The real pngs, etc would be safe because you don't rename PNG files to ".info"
I know I know... Workbench status is more or less fixed and if you keep on adding stuff you'll never finish testing :_(
But the first Idea wouldn't change WB and would be a very small change (I still don't know how drag&drop works with reaction, but I think that I could do it)
Question #1: Do you plan to release your OS 3.x gcc 68k compiler? I can't compile sources which use Reaction with the geek gadgets one... :-/ _________________ The only spanish amiga news web page/club: CUAZ

The details in the info bar are interesting re memory usage. If I'm reading it correctly, the 1st shot is using 31MB Public ram and 4MB Video. Second is using 42 and 5.
Very frugal!!

| Looks really good. Agreeing with SlimJim here: looks really relaxed... With a new icons set by Mason, this could turn into something really good looking.
Keep up the good work. _________________ A.miga D.emoscene A.rchive

In the mean time, keep up the great work. _________________ logicalheart wrote: You know that pretty sound you play when the computer starts? You need another one to play when the computer is actually ready to use. Maybe add more for malfunctions and then we'll have music all day.

Indeed , however an alpha layer can do a lot to the appearence of icons.
You can do antialiasing of edges no matter what the background happends to be by using an alpha layer. PNG icons can provide just that.
@ Rogue
Perhaps not PNG icons, but perhaps an alpha layer can be added to the current system?
(Edit, I don't mean the 4.0 release here, but in general terms modifying the icon.library)

| I think there should eventually be an option for vector-based icons, AND bitmap icons. In other words create a new .info format which can contain both sorts of data, with backwards compatibility for the old format. |

| Eyecandy is nice, but I think we shouldn't push for 32bit icons in this release.
After all AFIAK it would be easer to implement such things when the whole gfx system (2D/3D) is refactored.
Oh btw, I like the drop shadow on the text.
But most importantly of all, can you play squares?
This is where in Windows you minimise everything, (noticed the minimise icon on iBrowse btw) then you hold down the left mouse button and draw "squares" with the select rectangle.
This is a *MUST HAVE* for any new OS.

| Does anyone else find the memory displayed in the title bar a little confusing?
I think showing [free mem] / [total mem] isn't very clear (in jd997uk's post above he's either confused or not very good at maths ).
I think better would be:
Just the free memory or [used mem] / [total mem]
Only a minor thing i know, but i thought i'd mention it. |

| IIRC there used to be a utility called iconify which reduced all open panels to desktop icons, while the app runs in the background. It would be nice if a similar feature was included.
Those screenshots are mouthwatering btw, i'm so hungry for OS4 right now |

Yes, a new icon set will arrive. Mason is very busy doing that, and I've only seen glimpses of it, too |

Yeah, ok, I'm knackered at the moment, so my brain hurts.
So it should be (for the 1st shot) Freemem only 22MB used, Virtual 9MB used = 31MB total usage. 2nd shot should be Freemem Used 31MB and Vmem used 11MB = 42MB total
Either way, it's still a very small footprint, when you consider what's running.
As for the Title Bar being confusing? I'd reckon that it won't be long before little meters are written, that make it obvious as to what Mem usage is.

>Alpha channeling could still be done with an 8-bit palette, tho it probably wont be as effective
You mean allocating a part of the bit range for alpha channel data? For example like 3 bits for alpha channel and 5 for bitmap?
Yeah that would work. Though perhaps not very pretty :)
The best result would come from using a separate bitmap and alpha channel map. With 8 bits in both of them. Perhaps by adding a 3rd and 4th image to the icon data.
