Software News   Software News : Stratagus & FreeCNC ported
   posted by Mr_Capehill on 28-Apr-2005 21:52:26 (8029 reads)
Stratagus 2.1 and FreeCNC 0.3 were recently uploaded to OS4Depot. Both are open source real-time strategy game engines.

Stratagus supports games like Invasion - Battle of Survival (included), Wargus (WarCraft 2, needs original datafiles) and Astroseries. WarCraft 2 maps are confirmed to work. Astroseries works but there are some sound related problem.

FreeCNC supports early Command & Conquer games. C&C 1 demo was succesfully tested although some random crashing may happen when exiting. Unfortunately Red Alert demo didn't work (missing files). Anyway, RA isn't yet fully supported.

Stratagus
FreeCNC

Please make sure that you read the instructions before making desperate things after unsuccesful attempt to run a game.

miners is the workers..so click on thoose to see what u can build (lowst icon in the corner)

to make miners..click on the main building and make people..

to make warriors use a miner to make a house where they develop warriors (of sorts) ... its pretty elementary and most of all its identical to warcraft 1 , warcraft 2 and dune 2 for that matter..

if u cant find docs... then grab a warcraft2 cd as that will help (same docs for both more or less (and any stratagus game) ..

cheers

plays about as fast as in shapeshifter here (if not a tad faster...) i used 060 and turboevd in shapeshifter.

anyway i noticed people on other plattforms complaining about speed aswell but then again sdl might be the reason or the stratagus team screwed up.

Thanks, but I'm pretty thick, and I've never played any of those games, so it's a little tricky making the rules up as I go

When I get to the list of buildings I can construct, there don't seem to be any descriptions of the buildings, so I just have to try each one and see what I get. Then when I'm busy building, the other army appears and kills all my engineers. Grrr, it's difficult to play long enough to learn anything.

RedMelon:try some simpler levels at first, then u might learn it tooo (just noticed that its very hard....i got killed before i had made some figheters)

anyway one of the best tips would be, dont show too much of the map before youre ready, ie dont walk around before you have a proper army both to walk around with and to protect your base.

About speed of Stratagus...the FAQ mentions that:

"Q: Stratagus runs really slow in large resolutions, what can I do?
A: Versions of Stratagus from 2.1 update the screen every frame, and are designed to be used with OpenGL support. Using Software/SDL to update large screens is too slow and will cause the game to be slow. Use OpenGL if possible, or play in 640x480."

I just noticed that Stratagus seems to have an OpenGL backend so in theory using miniGL might boost things up.

@Orgin: still about MAC version. When checking Wargus FAQ, I found:

" Q: What W*rcr*ft 2 CD's do work with Wargus?
A: If you have any trouble with extracting, please contact us. Also if you have a CD not listed here, please send us the test results.

* US Expansion (both MAC/DOS)
* US Original (both MAC/DOS)
* UK/Australian Original
* UK/Australian Expansion
* German Original
* German Expansion
* Spanish Original "

So your CD should work. I wonder if 'wartool' gives any error during extraction? Could you list the files on the CD? My installation script isn't very sophisticated so it might no copy all stuff.

Hm, I have the Sega Saturn version of Warcraft 2 at home, I wonder if it might work; it seems like I have to test this, but i would be surprised if it worked.

Ciao, Alfred

If any of you have been having problems with Wargus crashing with an AI error in late games, I have posted a fix to os4depot.
