Software News   Software News : MakeCD now freeware!!
   posted by VooDoo on 10-Mar-2007 17:31:40 (5675 reads)
MakeCD used to be shareware and some shops sold boxed versions together with a license. This worked well in the past and we are thankful to everyone who found MakeCD worth paying for. However, MakeCD sales have long ago stopped being a relevant source of income for us. At the same time it has become harder and harder for interested users to get hold of a MakeCD license as more and more Amiga shops ceased business.

Therefore we decided to draw a line and stop selling MakeCD altogether: now it is available for free. You still need a valid license key for the existing binaries. Here is a valid, unrestricted key:

on a "true" Amiga or under emulation?

I have used my licensed MakeCD under WinUAE for several years, so I expect this to work the same.

It is nice that the software has now been released to the general public, but at the same time it is a sad reminder of the state of things for us. There are several aspects I would have liked to have seen remedied in MakeCD, not least of which would be a form of Drag 'n' Drop capability, and something a little easier than having to add files/directories and their icons all individually when creating things, and something similar to Neros' graphical display bar telling you how much space your current project will take on the media you are burning would have been a nice little addition.

That said, MakeCD has served me well since 1997 when I first purchased my copy.

To all those commenting about a possible "MakeDVD" (or lack thereof)...Amiga still sadly lacks a way to make a video DVD, one of several reasons I decided to make the switch to non-Amiga. :(

@Framiga

I think he means you could have phrased it differently..
Like "On classic Amiga or under 68k emulation?" for example.

unfortunately you got it wrong both. I meant to say under "emulation" aka WinUAE, Amithlon and such wich have problems with such a thing.

So far, I have only used MakeCD to burn ISO images, but it has allowed me to burn OS4 pre-release update #4, backup my hard drive in preparation for OS4 final, burn OS4 pre-release final update, and perform an occasional backup since then.

Thankyou,

@Framiga

My problem should have been resolved by me at once because
it was (1) just failing to enter all fields in the requester
and (2) hit return each time. Once I went back and cycled through
the returns the save button came up and all was well.

Alas, I've got used to those infuriating things one has to fill
in online in connection with registrations and payments where
hitting return invalidates the whole operation and string
gadgets are marked as must be completed or optional.

However, all is well and at last I can write a CD and put a
name on it. Thanks.

then you're doing better than me. under winuae I can enter the serial but it
will not let me save no matter what. after I quit and start, it will ask me
to enter the serial again.

unless I'm doing something wrong?

you might wonder tough why I would still use makecd. well, this is how I can
keep 'comments' attached to the files. it's my way of keeping things under aos.

MakeCD is not able to save the registration data to Windows directories, unfortunatelly. It should work with hardfile, though.

Wow that is quite a surprise, I am a registered MakeCD user and have been for years. But I am glad people will still be able to get the full (DAO) product because I think it is just the best out there accross many platforms

Does this mean all future development has ceased?

It is a real shame there isn't (as far as I'm aware) an OS4 native version of MakeCD and indeed a "MakeDVD" which would be awesome.

Maybe we should set up a fund for such things I would pay for such an upgrade without thinking about it for sure!

In these days of no commercial (or very few is more accurate) I think the way forward is to make donations for such products, I am willing to put money where my mouth is!

We need on the Amiga and OS4, a choice of browsers, a modern (Word compatible) Word Processor, CD & DVD burning software, something similar to iTunes (a fully featured TuneNet maybe?) and ArtEffect or something similar.

We do have some really top quality applications that are in development such as Hollywood & Designer, Pagestream, TuneNet, DVPlayer etc. But we need more!

Would anyone else be up for such a thing?

What a great shame to see that the development of MakeCD will almost certainly cease now that it is freeware.

I first bought this extremely powerful program back in 1998 and have been happily using MakeCD for everything from audio CD's to data backup and of course producing the ISO CD's for OS4.

OK, great! Considering "dvdauthor" was from after I sold my A1 :( ....

And what about an easy menu creation system with custom graphics?

Changes are if they did continue to work on it, I might have registered it.

DVD support, etc.

If you had bothered reading it;

"Future Development and Support

Understandably this issue has been brought up more frequently lately. We regard MakeCD in its current form as a very stable and mature solution for CD writing on the Amiga, which is one reason why development has slowed down.

We are aware that there are things to do and to improve, but we cannot make any promise when or whether any of it will be realized. A version 4.0 of MakeCD would require a considerable amount of time and effort and in the current situation of the Amiga market it is simply not likely that this would pay off.

Besides, we both have a job that requires all our attention (and a life to live, which is by no means less important). Please don't use MakeCD unless you are convinced that it already fulfils your needs (we trust that it already does, though . Holger Kruse has emphasized this point in a thread on our mailing list about expectations of (Amiga) shareware users; we couldn't have said it better and agree with all of his statements wholeheartedly.

Having said that, please rest assured that we are still dedicated to MakeCD and will provide bug fixes and adaptions to new drives as far as necessary.

Even if not listed in the Compatibility list, modern drives usually work with the
CDR_SCSI3_ATAPI.driver right away. Since V3.2d beta DAO is also supported for ATAPI drives (as promised earlier)..."

sorry for the bump here but ..

i moved my makecd around to a new place while doing backups and now it asks for registration again.

The MakeCD website is down so the free version + key is long gone.

anyone have the key and archive?

PS: sucks to lose emails with regcodes etc (as i regged makecd 3.x back in the early 2k)...
