Software News   Software News : Aquaria for AmigaOS4 released
   posted by afxgroup on 24-Jun-2010 7:42:25 (10706 reads)

We are happy to announce that a preliminary beta of Aquaria is available to download.
You need to buy the entire game from BitBlot to play it.
Included in the package the demo of Aquaria.
The package size is ~250MB so if you download it with OWB take a look at its size
If the included scripts fail to copy the support libs, copy them manually

What is Aquaria?

A massive ocean world, teeming with life and filled with ancient secrets.
Join Naija, a lone underwater dweller in search of her family, as she explores the depths of Aquaria.
She'll travel from hidden caves, shrouded in darkness, to beautiful, sunlit oases, all lovingly handcrafted by its two creators.

Naija's story, narrated fully with voice overs, will become yours, as you join her on this magnificent adventure.

-------------------------
System requirements

* An AmigaNG (SAM,microA1,A1,Pegasos2)
* 512MB of RAM (1GB reccomended)
* A video card with at least 64MB of Ram (128MB reccomended to play the game correctly)
* Latest SDL library (included in the package)
* OpenAL (the included cause an error at exit of program)
* MiniGL 2.2

* The original Game. You can buy it from Bit Blot web site (www.bit-blot.com).
* Once you have the original game, copy the data to the game dir and replace the script original game dir included in this package

------------------------
Installation

Aquaria require some not yet released libs like SDL or MiniGL that are included in this package.
Run the script "Install Support Libs" that will install them for you.
It will backup the current libs as #libname#.preaquaria so you can revert to the original one if you have problems with other packages
Nothing else is required

-------------------------
Known problems

* If you have a system with 512MB and a 64MB of Video ram is better to close all prgram before run Aquaria.
Use also a 16Bit Workbench screen with compositing effects off to save Video RAM

* You could have trashed textures during the menu (and also the game). This means that you are out of memory (Video and/or System).
The game is still playable but you should free something before continue playing but a video card with 128MB of RAM should cure all problems (and sorry.. this isn't a problem on the game..).
If this happens you can close the game and restart from a saved location.

* When you click ESC during the game the machine could freeze.. I don't know why but i have nothing on serial and i don't know why it freeze..

Awesome! Thanks!
Works well on A1XE, played 40 mins straight without lockups or else!

How can people complain these days? The last two years has been filled with new software, and hardware!

Indeed! And this marks the return of modern 2D gaming on the Amiga! There are a ton of next Generation 2D games in the works, it would be great to make of Amiga a special "hive" for this kind of gaming (ie: if you can't beat PCs on 3D, specialize in something else)

Personally, I mostly prefer 2D games instead of 3D...

But I'm not against "some" special 3D effects in 2D games, though

some quick feedback on trying this last night on my SAM:

1. needed to turn off compositing as stated in the readme
2. the videos don't play quite so smoothly
3. once the gameplay actually starts, it's absolutely brilliant!

terrific, terrific job! i know some have criticized all of the SDL-based ports coming to OS4, but this one is really something special.

fyi: my SAM is a SAMflex @ 667MHz with a radeon 9250 (128MB) video card.

Sure we can have it, for Windows it cost 17¤ so we'll have it for ~117¤...

If you have only Linux, roughly the same price applies for running natively the Windows version (unless it runs under Wine, though).

Can't wait to try the demo this evening.

I do too. The fact is these new 2D engines (like this or the one used in Muramasa the Demon Blade) can use a lot of effects generally associated with 3D games.
It's the new way of doing 2D look at this too:

http://kotaku.com/5503881/bionic-commando-meets-blaster-master-meets-metroid

Now don't let all those layers of parallax (and the guy shooting at an angle) fool you into believeing you are looking at a 3D poligonal game with 2D gameplay, if you look closer you will notice it's all 100% flat, hand drawn 2D.

This kind of 2D can be very appealing and the Amiga would be the ideal platform for them "heritage" wise.

And i really i don't understand why people critics SDL. I really don't understand what is the difference between OpenGL and SDL or Allegro or somethin else.
SDL is a library like any other. Why someone should avoid it?

@afxgroup

For 2D games, SDL often adds quite some overhead compared to more direct system calls (depending on how well the game is designed), and some programmers sometimes abuse event polling, leading to constant 100% cpu usage. For instance, in MAME, i made the blit routine 4 times as fast as the original SDL MAME implementation.

I have less objections for SDL/OpenGL games, because SDL basically just provides a context, and then it's mostly the GL implementation that matters. Of course, SDL can still add a bit overhead in event/input/sound areas, but it's less important, at least.

Anyway, back to topic, it indeed seems like a good game. Very pretty, at least.

ok, this is normal.. maybe someone can complains about the speed but the SDL is only a library like any other. maybe a little slow but this means that someone (as you did) can optimize it. But this library allows the developers to develop games more simply than using some proprietary libraries and is more portable than other libs.

BTW...
Please don't port Aquaria to MOS.. :D you know why.. :P

@afxgroup
By the way, after playing the entire demo all I can say is WOW, looks and play like a Nintendo Wii 2D game ("Muramasa level" not Nintendo retro downloads)), when you stand still it zooms in to the main character so smoothly without loosing fidelity and the music is hipnotic.
The 4 available menus (for songs, recipies etc) hint at a very deep gameplay, might have to buy this one

I can't seem to get the archive to unlha. Keep getting error "Error unpacking body.png wrong checksum" then unarc quits.

Downloaded twice in OWB and once in IBrowse, same each time, archive is 217.2mb all times, what's wrong?

uhm.. no one has this kind of problem.. it seems like something on your machine (maybe the memory) is breaking something. Do you have another pc (win or linux) to downlad and unpack it?

Tried downloading on my Mac, got estimated time 7 mins then went up to 4 hours, I'm thinking there must be some server busyness or issues. I'll try again later in week I guess.
