Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Open Amiga << Hyperion Entertainment Blog
   posted by zerohero on 27-Apr-2011 8:25:23 (15476 reads)
We often hear about software developers and eager users wanting to help the Amiga Operating System move forward with new functionality and bug fixes.

One way to get involved is by joining the Open Amiga effort. The Open Amiga web site has plenty of projects which software developers may want to tackle to enhance AmigaOS.

Open Amiga is not just for developers. Users may also contribute. Needed personnel include:

Developers and others who can join the main work group
Interested parties that provide feedback in the forums
People who can write developer guides and guidelines (how to's, do's and don'ts)
Web developers for building the infrastructure
People who gather available developer documentation from the net
Judging from the dates, many of the projects have fallen on hard times. Go ahead and grab one and start going.

good point.

Not necessarily. They could ask for a free copy of the next paid update or two in exchange for some good contribution to the effort.

I think you are reading a little too much into the announcement. No one is saying that AmigaOS source code is going to be released.

This could take the form of some kind of a premium system or rather a 'hidden' bounty, in which the reward is triggered on completion/invention of some important feature. Of course thinking in these terms brings us to another problem: which feature should be considered important (worth the prize)? And how to manage projects in a way that do not lead to abuses and deepen community division. These are issues which cannot be easily solved (if at all) given the situation in which the owners of the closed source, commercial software want to benefit from the 'open-source spirit' of the community.

@theusualsuspects

Which part of "Open Amiga -- Hyperion Entertainment Blog" says lets talk sh!t and go completely off-topic about a foreign operating system that has 0.0001% to do with Amiga and AmigaOS - yes they are mutally exclusive you can't have one without the other so I ask politely - go away and spout your propoganda on your own frigging forum as you obvious don't care about this topic.

@Arko

I don´t think you want to take part in Open Amiga.

It would be better to donate some money to developers than pollute this thread with OT comments.

Well technically "Open Amiga" belongs to Amiga Inc, Hyperion could do "Open AmigaOS" if they wanted to open up the OS.....

@persia

I assume we both know that Open Amiga project was not started by Hyperion.

However, it would be interesting to know how would look "Open Amiga" in gestion of Amiga.Inc.

@Arko

I know you're familiar with the Amiga history site's take on open amiga.

http://www.amigahistory.co.uk/1999players.html

I gather this is where you're coming from.

Regarding Amiga Inc. and Open Amiga:

Quote:
Gateway were prepared to open source significant parts of the AmigaOS (the exception being ARexx and other items that were licensed) as a goodwill gesture. Unfortunately for COSA, the Amino purchase, forced the group to abandon their previous efforts. In contrast to their predecessors, the new Amiga Inc. had no interest in open-sourcing the AmigaOS. Instead they would use it as a means of focussing the community towards their Tao-derived operating system.

Would that not be odd if they claimed interest in something they so despised and squashed?
Oh wait...we're talking Amiga Inc. nevermind...

OS4 is not going open source!!!
BUT Open Amiga projects are to be offered tp Hyperion for inclusion in OS4.
This is one of the terms of Open Amiga projects.

@Thread
If you purchase OS4, and updates, you are paying for the closed source commercial software, Open Amiga projects are open source software projects, i.e. free.

I reported you Arko, sorry that the system is not showing who did but at least you know now.

Now find an AROS thread or stick to the topic.

@Troells

Accept the facts:

This is not an AmigaOS4 thread, this is an comment to Open Amiga. AROS is more Open and AmigaOS4 is not Amiga.

The Mods should delete all this false titled Hyperion threads and announcements or rename them to AmigaOS4.
