I have a couple of Sapphire Radeon 9250 PCI's (256MB versions) and they are working in the Mediator without modification. Only 128MB of memory is recognized, though, but still more than enough.
You can also buy 5V cards from Elbox with 256MB in a single segment so it's fully visible by AmigaOS 4.1 Classic. _________________ AmigaOS 4.x Beta Tester - Classic Amiga enthusiast - http://www.hd-zone.com is my Amiga Blog, check it out!

| A good opportunity so that the Amiga Classics users join the club of the OS4.1 and enjoy it like that we have modern machines. |

Speaking for myself, i will happily pay full price. It's a small market etc etc etc. And even if you buy classic version it's cheaper than upgrading to windows 7. _________________ I'm an antique. Don't light my fuse

According to Hans no one has tested this card with classic systems yet. |

I bought a Radeon 2400HD for testing the RadeonHD driver, but unfortunately it wasn't electrically compatible with my Mediator (I need 5V) and the card was 3.3V.
I don't think anyone on the Classic beta team tested any RadeonHD cards.
So I don't know whether or not it would work. If you happen to test it you could send me serial debug output - that is, if it fails.
Edit: I assume you also would have to get the driver from Hans and add it to kicklayout. Last edited by HammerD on 19-May-2011 at 12:21 AM.

It does make sense if you consider the amount of work that went into it and how small quantities they expect to sell. You can hardly compare it to something like Windows or a multi-platform program like Hollywood. After 4.0 was released for Classic Amigas it was decided that it will be the last version of AmigaOS for classic simply because the amount of development that went into it did not pay off, e.g. it was a loss. The same is probably true for 4.1 Classic. I think it's more of a tribute to the good old Amiga systems and I'd be grateful that they even considered doing this, rather than complain about the price, which is not that much if you think about how much people spend on their classic Amiga hobby machines. |

| Excellent news.
One question: why you type AmigaOS4 text with some [strange looking?] font [+added lots of "candy" effects with [probably] Photoshop] than you used cool looking and well designed [original] Amiga logo, like in this example here I found on the Internet:

The AmigaOS 4.1 "logo" they present on the packing as well as in the default system installation is indeed terrible. It has been pointed out several times, actually, but no one seems to care.
As for your suggestion to use the Amiga logo we know from OS 3.5 and 3.9, I think it's quite evident that Hyperion has no rights to use it. _________________ The Rear Window blog

| Some quick replies:
- The AmigaOS 4.1 logo was designed by a professional. Even then there is no such thing as universal taste.
- If you compare what you are getting as part of the package with AmigaOS 4.1 for Classic as compared with the original Amiga OS 4.0 such as an additional manual/quick-start guide and a separate emergency bootfloppy, it easily explains the price difference.
- The fact that there is no upgrade option: compared to the original AmigaOS 4.0 for Classic the new AmigaOS 4.1 incorporates an additional 3 years of development (in addition to the extra material in the box) and as always with Hyperion, you can count on free updates, just like there were with AmigaOS 4.0 Classic. The fact that the range of supported (third party) hardware is so large also adds significantly to the cost because both development time and testing are longer. _________________

| @HyperionMP
regarding the logo: I guess, Amiga Users are just used to the original Amiga/Font-logo and wished they could keep it. However, when there's no way for Hyperion to use it due to legal reasons then, of course, there was no choice. So, I guess paying a professional was not done for fun but there was a need for it since taking the original was not possible.

| Pretty impressive. Getting any Radeon working with an A1200 and OS4.1 is pretty cool. Who would have imagined that a few years ago?
Nice work to all involved. |

Looking at the picture on the auction page it is a dual-voltage card, supporting both 3.3V and 5V.
This page explains a fair bit about various video card slots, voltages and such: http://www.playtool.com/pages/vidslots/slots.html.
In theory it should work... Last edited by gregthecanuck on 19-May-2011 at 12:02 PM.

| the problem is that although there are cards with 5v and 3.3 v slot, do not usually run on a single 5V Mediator (there's a technical explanation according Elbox) _________________

| I agree with AmiDog, there should be an upgrade path/discount for owners of OS4.0 Classic.
Full price for an upgraded product is not fair on previous owners, who got the worst Amiga OS release ever, IMHO.
I personally had never, until Classic OS4.0, regretted buying an Amiga OS, which was so temperamental at installing, and came with such a list of unsupported hardware for a Workbench system that worked so well under OS3.9, and hasn't been updated, apart from a minor fix, and which has seen virtually no new PCI hardware supported. Ever felt dumped ... I did then.
I've basically never used it, as it was such a bad product, and frankly for all the hardware you cannot use on Classic OS4.1 I'm sure there's little incentive for me to upgrade any further. At the moment for me, it's a dead fish in the water.
Who's to say what will happen in the near future, after Hyperion have filled their pockets with the cash from people who opt to buy this OS .. end up dumped like the users of the last Hyperion Classic OS4.0 release !!
People may complain about Amiga Inc. but when OS3.9 was released thanks to Amiga Inc. and Haage & Partner who stood by their product, and added some additional features to it, that lifted it way beyond it's inital release, for no extra cost - Boing Bags, Euro Update remember those, Ahh, those were the days.
There's virtually no support from Hyperion or ACube, no FAQ pages on their web pages, no area for asking questions about problems using/installing the OS.
It seems to me like, give us your money and don't complain when you realise you got short-changed.
Frankly I'd rather installl OS3.9 on Amiga Forever than buy Classic OS4.1 at this point in the proceedings. |

Unsupported hardware was known before purchase, you can´t blame company for that.
If I had Blizzard603e in my A1200, I would buy both OS4.0 and OS4.1. Not for daily use of course, but it could be nice toy for my pleasure. |

i'm sorry you had a bad experience. in fairness, though, everyone else who made the transition from 4.0 to 4.1 on the various 'next-generation' systems also had to pay full price. of course if you had such an unpleasant experience, perhaps you might want to wait and see from other users who do make the move to 4.1 on their classic boxes fare. then you can make a decision if it sounds worth it for you to try again.

a rather delayed update to be sure, but classic users weren't dumped; after all we're now discussing the release bringing them up-to-date with everyone else.

that is a very fair point. i do think hyperion, et al, could do more in the support area. public fora like these are wonderful, but they can never take the place of formal support from the developer. i would also like to see more in the area of documentation and support, and i'm sure hyperion would also agree. it's just a question of resources. that being said i've never had an issue i couldn't solve after reviewing the documentation which came with my system or asking on AWN.
i do hope you find others who have had a good experience after installing OS 4.1u2 for classics, and you give it another chance. the difference between the last OS 4.0 release and OS 4.1u2 is very, very substantial.

| There is an extensive FAQ and brand new installation guide that is shipping with AmigaOS 4.1 Classic (which, by the way, the FAQ already has an update to it and will be made available).
Hyperion is improving their communications - see the blog site where you have seen a far greater release of information about AmigaOS 4.1 Classic than any other 4.x release.
There's more news coming soon so keep posted. They aren't blind to the shortcomings and have largely tried to address all the issues with 4.1 for Classics. They have already said further updates are planned.
Is it perfect? No. Is it way better than 4.0? Absolutely. Last edited by HammerD on 19-May-2011 at 04:14 PM.

| I should correct you first of all on the issue that there were no updates for AmigaOS 4.0 Classic. There were.
Secondly, what you are no doubt complaining about, is the lack of out of the box support for some third party hardware in AmigaOS 4.0. This is why a compatibility list was published so people could make up their own mind.
A lot of the 68K drivers use exploits which are illegal, rely on certain undocumented behaviour or "features" of the 3.1 API, contain self-modifying code or were simply buggy which went unnoticed in a system without any form of memory protection, not even of the base page.
AmigaOS 4.0 provided more system stability for well behaving applications but if your goal was to run hardware banging software or shaky, barely working 68K drivers, you should have checked the compatibilty list first.
On top of that, setting up a dual boot system was not hard to do. _________________
