Announcement   Announcement : AmigaOS 4.1 Classic Available To Buy
   posted by amigakit on 17-May-2011 16:46:21 (9641 reads)
AmigaOS 4.1 Classic, the long awaited Classic Amiga system update is now available to purchase.

It updates your Classic Amiga equipped with CyberStorm PPC or Blizzard PPC to the latest AmigaOS 4.1 (Update 2) standard and builds on the foundations of AmigaOS 4.0. This is the first major update for Classic Amigas for three years.

Supplied on Amiga CD with Boot Installation Floppy Disk, two printed manuals and box.

Notably this latest system software provides support for ZorRAM Memory Expansion due to the extra memory burdens of modern applications.

Amingst the many improvements, AmigaOS 4.1 Classic also supports Warp3D hardware acceleration support for Radeon, Voodoo 3/4/5 and Cybervision / Blizzardvision PPC (stable beta version for Permedia2-based cards).

Elbox hardware such as Mediator PCI busboard and FastATA are supported. FastATA now has native driver support.

This update is the result of many months of hard work to bring new life to Classic Amigas. Special thanks go to Hyperion Entertainment, Carl Moppett, Darren Eveland, Steven Solie, Michael Boehmer, Elbox Computer, ACube Systems, Martin Merz and the many beta testers.

Where To Buy:
AmigaKit.com
Alinea Computer (Germany)
ACube Systems (Italy)

Great news!!
I'm really curious to see how it works on a classic machine.
If some brave can put a video on YouTube that would be much appreciated.

Hyperion's own announcement contains some additional text at the end, that is not given here:
Quote:
Hyperion and AmigaKit would also like to thank all Amiga Users for their continued support. Without you it would not have been possible. We hope that you enjoy using AmigaOS 4.1 Classic and look forward to the exciting updates that we have planned in the near future!

I added bold on what sounds an interesting teaser (probably aimed at all OS4.1 users?)

Excellent news.
I'm sure some videos will surface over the next few days / weeks as it gets installed.

Any chance of an upgrade offer for existing OS4.0 classic users?

Amiga OS 4.1 is a new product, not a minimal upgrade to be.
Don't confuse the .1 instead of a theoretical 5.0 version. Many features are new and it feels like a complete re-design.
After all, there wasn't such an upgrade path as well for Amiga OS 4.0 to 4.1 when it was released for AmigaOne systems.

Fantastic!

This year I expected Hyperion to do 3 things: Release OS4.1 for classic, Release Update 3, Release the latest version of OS4 on the commercial version for the X1000.

The first is now checked, on to the next :)

P.S
Gotta love the OS4.1 Boot Floopy, it's sooooo classic!! :)

@mfilos

I've bought 4.1 for my A1 and 4.0 for my A1200 despite being a betatester at that time and thus having access to the latest versions for free. I know there was no upgrade path for the "OEM" version of 4.0 released for the A1, but 4.0 for the classic was a full standalone product. Just have a look around. Want to upgrade Hollywood? Pay for an upgrade. Want to upgrade Windows Vista to 7? Pay for an upgrade. Want to upgrade OS4.0 to 4.1? Pay full price!? Doesn't make sense. In any case, unless there will be something like 50% off (for a downloadable 4.1 for existing 4.0 owners) I will not be able to afford it.

@natamix

You dont need a 256MB Radeon a 128MB will suffice.
Running WB in 1680x1050 32Bit with compositing turned on WB reports ~100MB free on the Radeon.

BlizzardPPC is the only PPC that supports 256MB RAM (2x128MB) So look for 128MB Simms

Also check Amibay.com for RAM sellers

JurassicC, thanks for the memory link...
Sapphire Radeon model 256 Mb, people say that only this model is compatible with Mediator 5v only.
