Software News   Software News : Battle of Wesnot for OS4
   posted by afxgroup on 28-Sep-2005 22:43:23 (17106 reads)
I've successfully compiled Battle of Wesnoth.

The Battle for Wesnoth is a free, turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme, and is now available for Amiga OS4.

Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands … Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and write your own scenarios – or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge your friends – or strangers – and fight multi-player epic fantasy battles.

I'll post it on my site and then on os4 depot because the archive is really big. So if os4depot's admins want to download it from my site it would be really appreciated..

to run it (for now):

Assign USR: YourPath:path_where_wesnoth_exec_is
run wesnoth

f.e.
assign USr: DH2:Wesnoth
run wesnoth

When it starts, it is a little bit slow. so don't worry for the black screen. It has many options that can be passed to the command line. So a Gui (DANIEEEELLLL!!!) it is needed as usual..

Enjoy

@ace:

I installed today's version just a moment ago and it worked (except the music).

Here is the shell output:

a new version is on the road.

i'm uploading it on OS4depot.

this version has the Audio enabled and so the music and the sfx work correctly. The assign is no more necessary. only make sure that the timidity.cfg is in the same place of wesnot executable.
The only available locale is the english (look at translation dir)

On the original site i have added the AmigaOS4 version link that now can change to os4depot instead my site

mmm.. for the messages that appear on console. don't mind..

Will it be in lha format. I found my problem was rar didn't create the necessary folders and hence I couldn't start it. Seems to be working well now.
Thanks for your efforts.

@afxgroup

your new avatar is sexier than you previous... At last to my male eyes

BTW in your previous version there was all the translations but it seems they weren't in the right drawer (using snoopdos IIRC this was the 'translations' that should be moved into '/local/share' instead of just '') but this was not the only problem, it seems that even after that there is a problem with the setlocale() call...

i'll check it.
for the set locale problem.
The program now use a dummy function instead the "official" setlocale() function so it should work. but i'll take a look at this

Andrea

@afxgroup

Are you sure it is a bug in SDL? Well, you must know better than me but I've been using your first release with music, no problem after a few tricks.

I used sox to convert the .ogg files to .8svx thinking that could work, but the output showed it was unable to locate WAV files. So I converted the .ogg to .wav and then renamed them to .ogg and music is working fine.

I'll download the new release anyway.

BTW, this is a really fun game. Thank you very much.

it is not a general SDL bug. but it is a bug for the os4depot version that doesn't recognize the files. I have recompiled all dependencies of SDL_mixer and the music now work without converting any files.

Don't know..

I've only played for a few minutes and can clearly see that it's what I've been waiting for some time!
It creates a world we can immerse ourselves in, which I haven't seen in the Amiga for quite a while.
The only downside is that it takes a while to actually start playing!

Other than that, this games really and truly rocks!!!

Thanks, afxgroup!!!

Got it running, now just to find some time to play it.
Cheers for another cracking port.

@Nuder_Try

I had that with the first (rar) version of Wesnoth.I tried to dabble with the icon, maybe that's what caused it.
The lha replacement ran first time!

@thread

In the first mission of the first campaign (the only one I played yet) each turn takes between 5-10 minutes to complete. It almost makes the game unplayable,I expected more from my G4 A1...
In the "non-campaign" scenarios (human vs AI), it's much faster, but still a bit slower than I hoped.

Is this normal or am I missing something crucial here?
