Close, but not quite correct. OS4 itself does have overlay support, and as I understand it's supposed to work with Voodoo3.
The Radeon driver lacks overlay support at the moment, but that's not OS4's fault, it's mine. _________________ All glory to the Hypnotoad!

It was build with broken includes and crashes becasue of that if you try to enable overlay in DvPlayer. But with very old versions of DvPlayer and probably the next release version of DvPlayer again, MPlayer, MooVId/Action, etc. overlay is working on at least Voodoo and PicassoIV gfx cards, and probably some other classic Amiga gfx cards as well (no idea which of them, additionally to the PicassoIV, had overlay support). |

| Not without risking legal action in some countries. Better to leave it separate, then it's up to the user to take the risk (if any). _________________ cheers tony

| Yeah, unfortunately the DeCSS algorithm that decrypts DVDs is on shaky legal ground. On the USA it's strictly speaking illegal (it's a circumvention of a copy protection scheme, it doesn't matter that the intention is to simply watch the movie), dunno about Europe. |

If Hyperion would buy a DVD player licence it couldn't be integrated into CDFileSystem either since the licence only allows to play, but not read/copy, DVD movies and CDFileSystem can't know how the data read from it will be used. |

| I had troubles getting this to work, but then fixed it by setting the "executable" protection bit on the plugin file.. my old unrar didnt set it.. (I used "protect file rwed" in shell)
then it still wouldnt work with anything properly.. and I realised I was using Dvplayer wrong! You have to use "open dvd/vcd" from the pulldown menu. You cant just load the VOB file with "open file"! and now it's playing back really well. I was sceptical that this would work well. I was proven wrong!
I'm on an AmigaOneXE G3. This is smoother than mplayer. In fact, I cant detect any playback imperfections. I tried Justice League season 1, and it played back with what looked like about 75% cpu usage. I'm playing back Korn Live at CBGBs, and it seems to be using up all the cpu.. maybe ranging from 97% to 100%.. but I still cant see any imperfections in playback quality. I'm switching screens and typing in IBrowse and the system feels pretty good still. The audio isnt even stuttering while I multitask heavily.
One bug though: when you make dvplayer go full screen and then access the pulldown menus, they leave a shadow in one of the screen buffers.. so the menus flicker during playback. Easily fixed by going from fullscreen to window, then back to fullscreen again though.
Good work. If dvplayer wasnt a must have app before, it definately is now! |

However, all attempts to prosecute the programmers that made DeCSS have failed so whether it really is illegal or not is still not 100% clear. Technically, CSS is violating consumer rights by preventing them from copying for backup/educational purposes.
Getting a license for CSS costs $15000 US per year (paid to a "non-profit organization") so that's not feasible. Even Linux doesn't have a DVD player produced by someone with a license.

Just like writing viruses isn't forbidden in most countries, only spreading them is. Initially the libdecss code was only available from servers in Sweden (IIRC) because it's one of the very few countries where it's legal. As long as such code is only used in free software most companies don't care anyway, but if it would be used in a commecial product like AmigaOS4 or DvPlayer it's something different. That's why for example the dvdvcd.plugin distributed with DvPlayer will never be able to play encrypted DVDs, the commercial DvPlayer doesn't crack the CSS protection, only the free dvdvcd.plugin distributed separately and by someone else does that, and there is no way the DvPlayer author could prevent it

Technically, CSS is violating consumer rights by preventing them from copying for backup/educational purposes. | For example in germany, very likely all EU countries, you don't have such rights anymore since some time if copying requires bypassing/cracking a copy protection, and it doesn't matter for what you want to make a copy, creating backups from your copy protected CDs and DVDs is as illegal as any other copy. Only if there is no copy protection, as it's the case for example with all audio CDs which are really audio CDs (the ones which have the CDDA logo, Philips doesn't allow to use it on CDs which don't conform the the CDDA standard) and not some broken 'copy protected' crap violating all CD standards, it's still legal to make backups and personal copies. With things like the DMCA I would be very surprised if you still have these rights in the USA, if you still have such rights in Canada it wont take long until they are gone since they make any DRM void as well. |

DvPlayer loads and plays encrypted DVDs fast here, anyway with some of them i can't see the movie in any scene, only extra. For example in "Underworld" and "Matrix Reloaded". _________________ ikir

Ouch..... A GPL based plugin for a Closed source application ?????
Is it compatible things ????? or did DVPlayer recently changed licence ?

DvPlayer does not rely upon the GPL plugin for general operation. DvPlayer does not come supplied with this plugins. It is up to the user to copy the plugin to their system. The author of DvPlayer had nothing to do with the GPL plugin and has no control over what plugins people write for it.
So, DvPlayer itself and the DvPlayer author are not liable for any laws that may be broken by people using this plugin in their country. _________________ Playstation Network ID: xeron6

Please put the movie disc into the drive instead of the bonus disc.
Seriously: Can't you even see the movie by changing the tracks by hand? (by up/down arrows in the bar where usualy you see the title of the played files) |

@Falcon1
DVPlayer have not changed liscense and to my knowledge it won't either anytime soon, and you also say "A GPL based plugin" ..well infact you said it just there, ie it is unaffected by the GPL rules as it is a plugin and most of all it is not a official plugin but just a 3rd party plugin. _________________ See my blog and collection website! . https://www.blog.amigaguru.com
