Software News   Software News : Bounty to port Gnash to AmigaOS4.1
   posted by Troels on 17-Apr-2009 14:56:54 (12258 reads)

The Gnash bounty is meant to help close the gap in web browsing experience by bringing Macromedia/Adobe Flash support to AmigaOS4.1.

Ultimate goal of this bounty is to get:
a) A standalone Flash player, callable from within scripts, and
b) A web browser plugin based on the NetScape plugin API.
(Please click read more)

Afxgroup (Andrea Palmatè) has asked to be assigned to the Gnash bounty which was originally proposed by Samo79.
The deadline for this project is 1st March 2010 for both a working standalone player and a working NSAPI plugin.

@abalaban

sorry but i don't understand.
the bounty was submitted by samo a long time ago.
I've seen it one month ago and i've downloaded the source code to see if this could be simply to compile (at least) on OS4.
Afteer seeing the dipendencies and so on, i've contacted Troels and i've started to do something before he tell me something about the bounty. Then he has accepted me like developer for the bounty.
What's wrong with this?

Honestly why don't we get the Amizilla funds back in business and perhaps help out here.

My Amozilla donation was given witht the expectation fo a Mozilla/Firefox port in return. I didn't donate that money intending for it to be used for anything else. If they want to give up on Firefox and change what they plan to spend that money on, I expect them to refund my contribution to me.

Personally I would like that the port comes out both in binary and source code and under a license that allows to be ported with the required modifications on the other Amiga OSes

Gnash is a flash (shockwave) player and plugin for Firefox and Konqueror.

What other choice do they have than to do what you suggest?

@afxgroup

Yea I thought that I might be misunderstood when I wrote my post, I think I don't have a rich enough english vocabulary to mean what I want and I might seem rude or something. That's not the case, really, I'm really glad that you are developping for us we would miss many things if you would not be there.

The previous version of gnash did quite well, the last release seems (is) very slugish with youtube, and the video player doesn't work completely. Maybe something was upgrade in youtube to create problms for gnash. Flowplayer based flash video players give a blank square.

It got very close to being able to play myspace stuff, but then myspace went moved the goal posts. Nothing needed fixing in thier player but they had to upgrade it breaking gnash as a side effect.

It doesn't do BBC iPlayer, one of the reasons sited was that there were no uk based gnash developers to test it.

I find really ironic in the world of flash developers that advert authors are far ore sussed about compatabilty than "legitimate" content providers!

Did you use it on Linux?

Used under Debian PPC on my AOne. A custom build (which took a while!) as they don't distribute linuxPPC versions ready built.

I just looked at the site, the version numbers gone up! points, so my current is now out of date....

For me 0.8.3 worked better 0.8.4, haven't tried building 0.8.5 yet, hopefully it'a better

On the Gnash website it says it supports flash 7 and part of flash 8 and flash 9. Every flash video we checked has been converted to, or originated in flash 10, for example on YouTube. How will a ported Gnash cope with this now?

I'm told flash 10 has quite a different internal architecture to flash 9 which is quite different again to earlier versions, quite a moving target!
