Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Open Amiga << Hyperion Entertainment Blog
posted by zerohero on 27-Apr-2011 8:25:23 (15477 reads)
We often hear about software developers and eager users wanting to help the Amiga Operating System move forward with new functionality and bug fixes.

One way to get involved is by joining the Open Amiga effort. The Open Amiga web site has plenty of projects which software developers may want to tackle to enhance AmigaOS.

Open Amiga is not just for developers. Users may also contribute. Needed personnel include:

Developers and others who can join the main work group
Interested parties that provide feedback in the forums
People who can write developer guides and guidelines (how to's, do's and don'ts)
Web developers for building the infrastructure
People who gather available developer documentation from the net
Judging from the dates, many of the projects have fallen on hard times. Go ahead and grab one and start going.

@Arko

News item is about Open Amiga not about AROS.

"The Open Amiga web site has plenty of projects which software developers may want to tackle to enhance AmigaOS."

From the Open Amiga web site: "
- Enhance the AmigaOS 4 experience
- Provide useful information for OS4 developers
- Research advanced topics like multi user support

Everything that Open Amiga produces shall be done with the intent of some day including it in the main AmigaOS4 distribution made by Hyperion. "

I have nothing against AROS but I hate to see every AmigaOS thread dragged offtopic by supporters of other OS's.

Aha, so the original Open Amiga was a project for the benefit of all Amigoid OSes, and now someone has hijacked the name for an OS4-only projects site? Not very "open" if you ask me. And quite dirty.

I´m sure their intention was not to harm anyone. They only want to help improve their favourite OS - AmigaOS.

@djrikki
Oh yes - I've seen people here at AW.net, who had reported themselves out of pure desperation.

Quite shocking! So when did "Open Amiga project" become "Free labor for Closed OS4"?

So essentially it's not about Opening anything? Why "Open Amiga" if indeed it's about a CLOSED source OS? Should it more properly be called "Closed Amiga?"

Well technically "Open Amiga" belongs to Amiga Inc, Hyperion could do "Open AmigaOS" if they wanted to open up the OS.....

Wrong as well. Technically OpenAmiga belongs to orgin (Björn Hagström) since 2008.

AmigaOS4

Problem is as of right now, AmigaOS4 will not run on the new Commodore Amigas. Also, Hyperion does not have the right to issue any license for "Amiga" only "AmigaOS" or "Amiga OS" sites. Setting all that aside, Openamiga.org is nothing like what the original openamiga.org was about.

Correction... Commodore USA Amigas. If everyone has nothing better to do than be pedantic then so shall I.

Correction no.2... Hyperions owns AmigaOS so yes of course they can purchase their own domain name under any of the two later site names you mentioned.

No, they will be named "Commodore Amiga"

Hyperion is officially endorsing a site that claims to be "Open Amiga", yet targets only AmigaOS4 which is not licensed to use the name "Amiga" nor runs on Commodore Amiga hardware.

This may be splitting hairs legally, since I doubt Amiga Inc or CUSA take legal action right now. Also, I personally do not care. I just find it rather silly to hijack the name of a movement that was intended to benefit not only the real original Commodore Amiga user base, but also ALL NG variants and change it completely to a pet project to benefit a closed source, commercial product that is not "Amiga".

Why on earth are you using such inflammatory (and incorrect) term as "hijack"? Are you intentionally trying to start a flame war?
(Not that the-usual-suspects aren't also doing their bit too - rather sad really that they have nothing better to do.)

As to why "hijack" is incorrect: That implies the domain name was obtained by force or underhand tactics. But I rather suspect that the original "Open Amiga" project had woefully optimistic goals, completely failed to get anywhere (like Amizilla), and let the domain name lapse. It is then perfectly valid for someone else to buy the domain, and make use of it in an Amiga-related project.

So you are keying in on a single word "hijack", would you rather I used a different term to make the same point? Would you be any less angry and accusatory in using such terms as the-usual-suspects

Put the shoe on the other foot and OS4Depot domain expires, Piru registers the domain and starts promoting OS4DEPOT as the best place for your MorphOS software. How about one step further and Amigans.net lapses, CUSA buys it and puts a forum dedicated to their new tablet?

So KOSH would be fair game for CUSA's new Commodore OS?

I think that would be the same some people feel now having CUSA selling PC running Ubuntu called Commodore Amiga. Nothing to do with the previous but that is business.

I see the case of Open Amiga like that. Once there was an Open Amiga initiative, and now there is another different one. But no one has hijacked anything.
