   posted by elwood on 21-Oct-2012 11:21:17 (14184 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, 20 october 2012

On our never ending effort to always offer the best support to our customers, we are delighted to announce the availability of another operating system for our Sam460ex/AmigaOne 500 products.

Thanks to our agreement with Jason McMullan and before that with Michal Schulz, a native version of AROS has been presented at Amiwest and will be shown at the upcoming Pianeta Amiga in Italy (30 nov. 1-2 dec, 2012). AROS will be soon available for all our boards.

Many thanks to Jason McMullan, Michal Schulz and all AROS developers and community for their work and contribution.

manu, lets not be so oversensitive, i actually agree with pavlor here, and think it is genuinely alright to mention it.. lets not follow bad customs of suppressing criticism. listening to it can only help.

@Manu

This thread had zero to do with AROS default theme

AROS for SAM460 was promoted with some default theme. I don´t like that default theme and I wrote it. Simple.

Was it really necessary to invite everybody to derail the thread from something positive into something negative.

That was not my intention!

As I wrote, I´m using AROS for my experiments and like it.

@wawa

I was 3 days without internet access, I couldn´t see uproar my comment created.
I promise I will not mention AROS theme in the next AROS news item.

It seems it is needed. Change of window theme is now realy simple in AROS, I don´t get, why it is still the same horrible theme. Default theme should be useable and appealing for new users, this one isn´t.

I don't like it either, but what should we use instead? We don't have permission to use the icons used in Icaros for example (I should add that it isn't Paolo who would need to give permission).

If you like, you could always use AspireOS icon-set.
I be glad to help out with that, so they are default in night builds.

Sure we would need to take out some of Jasons icons, but that would be no problem.
I got premission from Jason to use his icons, I'm pretty sure AROS would get that if you asked. I could always ask for you if you wish Jasons icon set as defalut, more like Icaros iconset.

I have to agree. Default AROS theme is ugly.

As for the icons, I asked Ken quite a few years ago about it and he was happy to let us use them, he just wasnt too up on licenses and he wanted to "own" them still (iirc this was the only caveat).
This was years ago during the time of my "Velocity" distro, and Ken even helped me with some extra icons that were lacking. (never publicly released, but at least they ended up getting used in Icaros. Wouldve felt bad for his efforts to go to waste :))

That aside though it is something that gets bought up from time to time 'cos I dont think many people like them, let alone want to use modified linux icons.
For whatever reason though theyve never been changed. Dont quote me on it but I think it's in part from a lack of alternatives the majority like. The size of Ken's icons (or lack of) has been a part of the reason theyve been refected by some people thus far. Being that the majority of desktop machines are running at last 1920x1080 these days I do see the point, although personally I like icons not being too big (what's the point of a bigger display if youre going to counter its usefulness with large icons?).

How about doing some benchmarks between the two OSs on your SAM when AROS-PPC is released?

What do you mean 'is released'? AROS-PPC has already been 'released' since the Sam440. Oh, you mean updated for the 460...

:-p
