That would also be a good choice, not only is it still sold. It wouldn't be that hard to have production runs done to make more, with parts being available and it having RoHS compliance.

A Pegasos I version might follow. Nothing decided yet, mostly since we do not know how many Pegasos I are still out there. IIRC bPlan/Genesi once offered to exchange Pegasos I for Pegasos II relatively cheaply.

Understanding isn't really necessary.
The Pegasos II Firmware has something calls RTAS (Run Time Abstraction Service) that makes supporting the chipset itself (for which I had zero documentation) quite easy. As the name implies, it is a part of the firmware that stays around and allows access to some of the features of the board without knowing the hardware.
Guess what Apple's are missing.

It seems that the can and will port OS4 to anything they want now.

Exactly the same reason there won't be a mac mini port.
It is closed hardware, and apple are very unlikely to divulge enough info to Hyperion to enable such a port without a substantial return.
