@ DaveP

Yes, amongst others including Ron van Herk of Computer City.

I also plan to attend CeBIT this year.

Any plan to port OS4 on this set-top-box?

There are some interesting things mentioned in German comments to this news item on www.amiga-news.de. Like comment 11 by Senex.

@ ikir

Main addressed points:

- Senex is sceptical about being able to show AROS running on their STB at CeBit 2005.
- Senex does not want to go into specifics, but they were not able to get into an agreement with Amiga Inc. Of course, he seems to suggest that they are not to blame.

Anyway I hope this will help push the AROS project forward and allows them to make some good progress for the long run. Just hosting AROS on top of LinuxPPC doesn't look that tempting to me, also compared to other more widely available AROS solutions (Windows/Linux x86 powered PCs).

In short:

The did try to get OS4 on it and came to terms with what they thought were the right person (Hyperion and maybe P96 I might guess), but than came AInc with some restrictions and demands that they viewed as inacceptable.

I think the last past hits the nail on the head (loosley translated):

"We talked to one of our advisors, a big add-agency which also works for Mexx and ABB and they had this to add: 'So you plan, after years of failed attempts, to make the Amiga-trademark more known with your promising product - how much is AInc paying for the favour ? ' "

Please note that Senex specificly said that he did not want to go into details with regard to the differences between the involved parties. So coming to conclusions, like you seem to do here is IMO pretty premature and one sided.

You might want to read Senex comment on amiga-news.de again and see that Kronos is paraphrasing him and also offers a translation (my native language is german, so I am able to verify this).

I can't see him coming to conclusion or anything premature like you seem to think.

Well, judging by my bad german skills and crappy systran translation Senex suggests they tried to get an Amiga license but Amiga Inc demanded too much. How much is too much, I don't know. Nevertheless this is good news to AROS and the Amiga community (if there is still one) in general.

I read those and I didn't say he comes to conclusions, but only that he *seems* to come to conclusions. Just read his comments within another AW thread where he suddenly decides to bring up this news item.

BTw "seem" means: " To give the impression of being; appear".

@Mike

You imply that he comes to conclusions. It *seems* to *you* that he comes to conclusions. Which basically just means that you *think* he is coming to conclusion which he isn't actually. So anything stated this way is to manipulate other readers to convert this *seems* to a fact

KMOS. Remember we wanted the name licence. Anyway, it's all water under the bridge now.

The same could be said of any interpretation of another persons words - e.g. a manipulation.

When Senex makes a statement in English, or someone else close to the project does, Im sure we will know more.

That is a bummer that OS4 will not be on those machines. That surely would have boost some things. Aros? Dunno.

According to my information Garry Hare wasn't the main obstacle here. Kronos used Garry Hare as a reason to bring AHT up within the linked thread.

Anyway without knowing all the specifics from both sides of the story shouldn't we really refrain from any finger pointing?

AROS is improving all the time.

I took the liberty of google translating that comment from Senex in amiga-news.de and it of course makes little sense but it might help:

Quote:

And which concerns the Amiga license... Nunja, we want and here naturally no details of our months-long negotiations with the parties concerned will publish, therefore only as much:

We were us with that of our judgement for this relevant parties so far united, so that it would have required only still the signatures and transfers. As itself then however surprisingly also AI switched on and new conditions brought in. And as now times with negotiations like that is, becomes one either united or evenly not. And the extent at control and restrictions, wished by AI, was for us stop directly inakzeptabel, therefore we had to remain-let it.

Particularly us our advisors - among other things PriceWaterhouseCoopers - anyway suggested to establish better our own label. Whereby also the discussions with one of our remaining advisors - a larger advertising agency, which cares for among other things ABB and Mexx - in those days were quite illuminating. Corresponding quotation: "Soso, you want to make thus after all the years of futile attempts the label name Amiga again more well-known by means of your promising equipment - how much AI pays you...?"

Ill keep my long held opinions about PwC to myself, but anyone can read Private Eye and find out about them....

Dave.

Here's a bad translation (Altavista + some obvious corrections) to make things clearer. OK - perhaps not really clear still

We're not fixed to one ideology, and are open to all : -)

In view of the more advanced level of development compared to AROS and not least the 68k-compatibility, your question is naturally justified. However, the MorphOS developers at present have different concerns.

Concerning the Amiga license:... Nunja (?), we naturally will not publish details of our months-long negotiations with parties here, therefore I'll tell you this much:

We were so closely united with the relevant parties, that that it would only have required the signatures and transfers. Surprisingly, however, AI brought in new conditions. And as happens with negotiations like these, one becomes either united or evenly not. And the extent of control and restrictions desired by Amiga was unacceptable for us, therefore we had to let it go.

In particular our advisors - including PriceWaterhouseCoopers - suggested to us that it would be better to establish our own brand. Also, the discussions with one of our other advisors - a larger advertising agency, with clients including ABB and Mexx - were quite illuminating. A quote: "So, after all the years of futile attempts, you want to make the brand name "Amiga" famous again though your promising equipment - how much are AI paying you...?" Therefore it is now called "ARIANA" instead of "Amiga 700".

---edit---

Grrr - beaten to it

Through thick and thin AROS has managed to keep at it. I was very impressed with their effort while reading the new AROS "Portal" .

This can only help get the Amiga name out there again and it seems to me combining efforts somehow would be a major benefit to all parties concerned.

I wish these guys the best.

Again?

Sorry, I feel like I already read that a few years ago.
