I also wish that it will be sold with OS4 in Jan-Feb 2006, but I don't believe it.

Until now, they haven't done anything to make me trust/believe in their capabilities.
I have rather seen a lot of unprofessionalism.

@Samwel

Thanks Sam. To simply run OS4 I doubt Troika need a license because PC manufacturers don't need a license from microsoft to build an Intel box that is simply capable of running windows.

Comi,

Whats to stop Genesi from building a box that can run OS4? Answer is nothing.

If someone were to buy such a box from Genesi and then buy a copy of OS4 from an Amiga dealer what is to stop them from putting it on the said Genesi box? Answer is nothing.

They already DO have hardware that can run OS4.

It seems you have no clue where the real problem lies...

Well the last thing that I heard was that Genesi tried to force OS4 to be ported so that it could run on Genesi boards.

As for me not having a clue where the problem lies then tell me this, can I go to PCworld and buy a mother board, intel processor, memory chips, case etc etc etc and also purchase a copy of windows, assemble it all and put windows on it or do I need to obtain a license from Microsoft before doing so?

Oh, and if Troika to need a license which they don't have then where are the lawyers and court cases?

Either the lawyers are eagerly awaiting for Troika (or Hyperion!) do to something that's actually illegal (it's only been words so far, and carefully phrased ones at that), or Amiga Inc simply don't have the cash to hire lawyers... Or perhaps Troika DO have a license, but don't wish to antagonise Eyetech (yet) by waving that fact in their face? Place your bets!

It is probably a good guess to say that Hyperion's contract with Amiga Inc says that Hyperion can write OS4, but that Amiga Inc must certify any hardware it is sold to run on.

But Hyperion can easily prevent Genesi (or whoever) from *legally* runing OS4 on their hardware, (a) by withholding support for the necessary drivers & HAL, (b) requiring some form of copyrighted ROM code for OS4 to work, and (c) only selling OS4 bundled with hardware.

What? And what do you mean by "forced" anyway? If there are no licensing issues involved, as you stated, why would they need to "force" somebody for porting?

If no license issues would be involved, the existing platform would be a viable platform for OS4 and would allow Hyperion to release the final version, since hardware would exist, which could generate sales.
"Porting" (rather adapting) is very simple and would not constitute a major obstacle: As the OS4 website states, it is a "a simple and speedy matter".

But as we (nearly) all know, there are certain issues which PREVENT OS4 to be released for a Genesi platform.

Website of Amiga Inc. clearly states:
"AmigaOne Partners have the right to distribute AmigaOS 4.0 into the AmigaOne desktop computer market and into Cyberstorm PPC enabled devices. Distribution into any other market or device requires a licensing and distribution agreement with Amiga, Inc."

Ever heard of U-Boot by the way?

Thanks, finally somebody who understood what the (critical) point is.

Why? That would just be common market competition - left aside that Eyetech has no hardware, so they would even have pure monopoly.

Judging from the impression I got from Troika, I do not think that they have a license (yet). If they would, you could immediately read it on their website:

"For immediate release: Troika is proud to announce to have successfully acquired license for Amy '05!!! for running OS4 on see screenshot of email from Amiga Inc. (small).!!"

ChrisH,

My understanding is that the final release of OS4 will be available for general sale, I might be wrong though so please correct me if I am. That is the basis I am working on though and if it is correct then even Genesi coul dproduce hardware for OS4 to run on.

Depends on how you understand "general sale". If you mean that it would not require any licensing or "dongling", yes, then you are wrong.

having to face everything from mild piss-offs to death threads,

Thank you thank you and thank you again, all of you, all at Hyperion, Rouge, everyone.
I know "we" the AMIGA community piss you off regulary and can seem quite in tollerable at times, I think it's mainly out of passion, however I think i speak for everyone when I say we wish you and yours only the very best in life and no one wants you gone!, well except perhaps the compertition but that's only because they are scared because you have such a kick-ars# product to show ;)) I think the community would deliver multiple bashings to anyone who tried to stop you even then lol ;)

I for one can only thank you all for the time and effort you all have put in to developing the AMIGA OS and giving it a chance for the future. I'm also one of these people just hanging out here :) Personaly I can't wait to see it and have felt this way for years.

I also absolutly love it when you people get the time to drop by, hang out and answer questions even if they are the same old ones the 60th time over :) I love the little hints you drop and tid bit pieces of information you tempt us all with, it only makes the excitement more.
I'm going to try tune in, I think it's +11 hours for us Aussies so round 6 am. I'll go check it out, but I can't wait for just a little bit more info :) lol

I'd now like to take this oppertunity to wish you all a most happy Christmas (if you celebrate) and fantastic new year and once again, thank you.

This topic seems to have gone somewhat off-topic for my liking.

Looking forward to the IRC session, just hope I'm not working that night...

I'm pretty confident that the news will be an available download of OS4 final (or final beta?) for A1 owners and news of a full launch with new hardware early next year.

Or maybe an announcement of a deal with some mobile hardware manufacturer?

(yes, I'm speculating slightly here)

@SHADES

Wow, I think you must be breaking some sort of record there for the most number of thank you's in a single post!

I completely agree with the sentiment of course, Hyperion have really given the Amiga a new future by developing OS4 and I think the end product is really going to show that we were all right to stick by our beloved platform all this time.

Skunkfish

PS. Merry Christmas everyone!

I rarely post here, mainly because my Amiga knowledge is limitted to average user level, and I can't really contribute to many discussions. But this thread seemed important to add to.

I just wanted to personally thank Hyperion for carrying the water of the Amiga community, and developing OS4 out of love for the platform. It sure isn't the money you hope to make, and the more reasonable of us know that. We all 'vote' with our dollars and I will buy OS4 when it comes out, and a new Amiga...even though they will likely be very pricey compared to a Windows box. I don't care...I want to reward the folks that put in the effort to keep the Amiga alive/resurrected, and while nice posts in threads, showing support are nice, in the end we have to buy.

Thanks Hyperion, your efforts are greatly, greatly appreciated. Have a Merry Christmas, and I'll try to catch you on the 28th!
