hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : New consignment of AmigaOnes soon available
   posted by ssolie on 17-Jul-2006 21:58:25 (15986 reads)
We recently received delivery of a small consignment of AmigaOne motherboards for testing prior to redistribution among all AmigaOne dealers worldwide.

Update 18 May 2006 Quantities are limited and it appears that the CPU modules (G4 1.1 GHz for the XE boards) will not be available before the end of June 2006.
We will, of course, need some time to test them and prepare the new configurations, but you will very shortly be able to order a reconditioned AmigaOne from your favourite dealer!

Warning: quantities will be limited.

Don’t forget to bookmark this page for the latest info.

Update 16 July 2006 Some µA1-Cs are already ready to go out to dealers. News of the G4 modules is expected some time next week. Those wishing to trade in their existing G3 800MHz modules should contact their local dealer for a possible trade-in (not all dealers may offer this).

News taken from Amont Informatique.

But do not worry, I offered my µA1 and our webmaster (amigaclub.be) also offered his amigaone for use by a developer and we never got any reaction.....

Too bad, sounds like a good initiative though

I myself have been thinking about setting up a VNC-connection via the Internet, and perhaps offer people to both try OS4 on my XE and use it for developing when I'm not using it myself.

@realize

I can't speak for everybody but I do know that some were not happy that you brought the PEG II into this thread. Added to that, no-one here knows: how much they're going to cost, how many boards there will be, or, what kind of warranties will be given. You have been asserting that there will only be a few, they will be too expensive and have absolutely no warranty. That is another aspect that people are complaining about. You may well end up being right. But for now, better make sure people realize that what you're saying is speculation.

Personally I think that this is good news even though its impact will be small. It's not something to sing and dance about, but it is positive. Anyone that buys these refurbished machines will know the risks. If they've read your posts they'll definitely be checking what sort of warranties will be offered.

@aminicle
I do think that some more developers will get access to OS4 machines because of this. If I didn't have an A1 and wanted to develop for OS4 and expected the Powervixxen and other hardware to become a reality, I would buy one of these machines. That way I could have software ready for when the new machines arrive. If they don't, I'd still have my (expensive) toy. Others of course would take the wait-and-see approach you outlined.

Hans

As toaks said already, it depends on the shop someone buys the A1 from. As Amont Informatique is a french business, there is a limited warranty guaranteed by law (even for "refurbished" goods), which is applicable in many countries in the EU (but not all and Germany raised this limited warranty to 12 months, so the German dealers perhaps won´t sell these boards because of the warranty limit difference of 6 months, if I remember this number correctly. If not, feel free to correct me).

You know, when I think about it, I'd much rather see at
least a few of these µA1 boards go to some cash poor,
but dedicated developers. Perhaps something could
be done along those lines. I'm just someone interested
in the completion of the OS 4 project, not a developer.
I'm willing to stay on the sidelines for this limited batch
so that someone actually trying to produce software will
have a better chance at getting one.

@realize:

In case you don't get it (but I think you do...) the reason why people are calling you a troll is that we have a news posting about new A1s, and you pop in solely to put the A1 down and tell people to buy a Pegasos instead. If you're still selling Pegs, that makes it blatant advertising to put down a competing product; if not, it makes you a shill for those who are. Either way, it's unwelcome.

I'm sorry amiga inc told you to take a hike, but you don't have to behave like a spoilt kid because of it.

1. I dont sell pegs

2. Amiga inc didnt tell me to take a hike. However, they pretty much have told the Amiga COMMUNITY to take a hike, so dont' know how you feel about that one...

3. THe point was that refurbished teron boards shouldn't be sold as new retail pricing with no warranty. I should never have mentioned peg.

Sorry, I got you mixed up with Acill. I was under the impression that magnetic systems was a Pegasos dealer?

You are making the assertion that they ARE going to be sold this way, do you honestly have the information that states this? Anything you purchase from a reputable dealer will have some kind of warranty attached and I am sure these boards will be rigorously tested before redistribution... so, whats your beef?
However, I think it is important that you did highlight the warranty issue for those purchasers who might be naïve enough to buy an important piece of computer kit without any kind of guarantee that the thing even works....

I am glad you have realized this fact. Can I take that as an apology?

@realize

Thanks for your concern. I don't need you to "wake me up". In the time that the Pegasos and Pegasos II have been on sale, I've spent enough money on AmigaOne and classic Amiga hardware to buy a Pegasos II several times over, and I don't regret not getting a Peg one bit.

My AmigaOne has given me years of hassle free enjoyable computing. I have had hours and hours of enjoyment out of OS4, and I'm glad I spent every penny that I did on my A1.

If people want OS4, let them buy an A1. Honestly, you're like a broken record. Any news about software or hardware for OS4 and you have to chime in... "looks great! I wonder if it runs in OS4Emu on my Peg!", "Well thats probably good news but you could get a Pegasos for 50p!!!" blah blah blah. Its not like nobody here is aware of the Pegasos, its just that most of us don't particularily want one, or if they ARE interested, they've probably already got one.

I am sorry, magnetic, but WHY would you be in a position to judge the quality of AmigaOne-related news?

Foolish commentary? No one asked you for your opinion; you should be prepared, however, that there are some that do not share it. That doesn't make them foolish; it only makes you appear immature.

He has been a Pegasos dealer, but did stop "end last year"/"beginning of this year".

@all
This is no intention to flame or anything, just to inform that he is no longer a Pegasos dealer.

@moderators
I know this is OT, you are free to delete/edit it, if anyone reports it - no mater what.

Nah, you're right.

@all

OK. Could we all please just drop it now? Focus on the merits of the sales itself, please.

@ssolie

I haven't read the whole thread yet (one of the reason being that I saw too many "trolling & OT" Comments on the one page I read...). But IMHO it's really good news !
It shows that some people are involved in trying to solve the HW Availablity Issue !
