Internet News   Internet News :  Acube and Nusim Open Bounty For AROS Port to SAM440
   posted by Fransexy on 14-Jun-2007 15:29:23 (8216 reads)
On Amiga.org and Aros-exec has been posted this:

"Acube and Nusim have formed a TeamAROS Bounty to port AROS to SAM440. Official bounty will be open as soon as the AROS Devs have had enough time to give input on the bounty's description"

"Acube Systems SRL and Nusim Ltd are hoping to get an AROS port started to the Acube Systems SAM440 board.
Acube have kindly decided to make available a SAM440 board to the developer who accepts the bounty. The bounty $ amount will start in the same territory as the EFIKA bounty did.

They are seeing the OS4 door closing and AROS is a way to maintain a presence in Amiga community.

Well they said that they wanted as many OSes working on it as possible. The same way that Genesi has an AROS for EFIKA bounty.

I will prefer to buy a Sam440 board and them try it. I'm not a good programmer and probably I won't accomplish it, but I will have a hell of a fun time trying :)

I hope they start to sell the Sam boards soon, they look like lot of fun for geeky projects.

If I would have a better knowledge of System development and the GNU Tools, I would try to port AROS to this Platform:

AVR32

Thats a brand new Architecture and it seems to be really powerful.

MP3 Decoding at 15 Mhz and DVD Playback at 75 Mhz !

And BTW it is Big Endian :)

Then it's nothing up to AROS... it has no relevance whatsoever, it's not as if it's AROS fault, nor will it contribute a dent to it

@Pentrite
@spotUP

Acube were talking about AROS on the SAM in Bitplane magazine last Autumn .

I understand the following from Nusm Ltd;

AROS and Acube were contacted a fair while ago by Nusim Ltd.
Nusim wanted to see AROS PPC available on a choice of platform.

The other litigation case has no bearing on the existence or timing of this bounty.

I am looking forward to AROS on the SAM and EFIKA - it will make a big difference to have AROS on stable and long lasting platforms. Bring it on!

Having just read the latest document from Hyperion in the court case, I wouldn't be too surprised if see OS4 for SAM in the very near future.

@Colin_Camper

Further to that, I'm sure I read a comment on MorphZone that, the Sam team expressed an interest in having MorphOS running on Sam too. This would have been written not long after Sam was shown in September.

Yes, they said that when they came in France too... Does this mean they think they won't be able to have OS4? I think it's too much "trying to read between the lines"

Yes I'm sure I read that as well. That would be cool! I think MorphOS 2.0 will be a killer!

That might take a little more than just a bounty though. Had the SAM had "a different" firmware then things would have been a little easier I guess? Maybe they should consider that?

The timing of this announcement is not exactly a ringing endorsement in confidence with regards to their partnership with Hyperion to bring OS4 to the SAM440 though is it?

At the risk of opening up another can of worms, what exactly happened to MorphOS? Along the way I lost track of the chain of events in the post-Pegasos era but I'm left with the impression that the developers are no longer partnering with Genesi.

Is there a summary available?

I suspect it's more the fact that they just want to increase the overall appeal of the hardware by expanding the list of available operating systems.

The developers kept on developing MorphOS. A few minor upgrades of the 1.4.x was released for the Pegasos and Amiga (some things were not so minor actually, at least not IMHO). During Summer of 2004 the MorphOS Team made this comment on morphos-news.de: "We work on a major OS release update and the name 1.5 is probably not appropriate enough to describe the differences". Indeed the next release will be version 2.0, and it's rumored to have fundamental improvements. The OS has already been showed in public. MorphOS will probably be *sold* to end-users starting from version 2.0, which is also a sign of a higher standard IMHO. Maybe version 1.x could be seen as a start of a journey, now a *second generation* MorphOS arrives (MorphOS "done right"/"as it's supposed to be"), and this time around the MorphOS Team obviously don't feel ashamed to charge money for it. MorphOS 2.0 will support the $99 Efika hardware from Genesi. This is a result of an agreement that involved some kind of payments from Genesi. No-one knows when it will be released, but I don't think it will be too long now judging from reports.
