Didn't Rogue also say that the PS3's graphics performance on Linux was disappointing because of limitations Sony had put in? I am 100% in agreement with getting him some token of our appreciation, but let's go for something more useful...

Rogue has a advantage that Linux developers don't. One of the original designers of the Amiga RJ Mical is also one of the lead PS3 developers and he works for Sony! Rogue should contact him if he needs help or has concerns. I bet RJ would love to play with Amiga OS 4.1 on PS3.

That asumes that RJ would break all sorts of code of conduct, and most likely internal agreements he has with Sony.
That would not be the least bit proffesional.

The ide to give Rogue a PS3 is nice, though.

Or it could mean that Hyperion Entertainment and Sony enter into an NDA agreement via RJ, you never know what the future may hold. We are not looking for any rules to be broken because of our gesture for Rogue. Maybe he will get it and have some coding fun.

I'm pretty sure that Hyperion have ruled out a PS3 port because of the limitations imposed by Sony on third party operating systems, and sending a PS3 won't solve that.

Well.. I've donated a few bucks.
Of course Rouge has earned the right to have a PS3!

Even if the gfx performance is poor on the PS3 it should be usable in 2D.

Giving Rogue a PS3 will also give him access to a Cell based system and the ability to port to that architecture. Even if the PS3 port doesn't pay off there may be other Cell based HW in the future, who knows?

So if Rogue likes the idea I'm all behind it

I agree with CodeSmith, I would like to see OS4.1 on the ps3 like many others here, but i do not see the point having a 'crippled' OS4.1 on the PS3 (no Cairo no openGL etc support) due to restrictions wich sony will not give away sadly, but hey if rogue get's a ps3 just for playing around with OS4.x or just for fun why not the man earned a thank you gift for all of his hard work on OS4.x and also the rest of the OS4 dev's ofcourse!

Good idea, i will also donate a few bucks when i get cash.
But i'm not sure $399 (+ tax) will be enough. In Sweden a ps3 is 4000SEK (approx 610USD). Well perhaps they are cheaper in Germany.

Yip! Many of us in the wider community have believed in the potential of the PS3 being a great alternative to "geniune" Amiga-compatible hardware... however one wants to define it, whether good or bad!

A couple of things though!

1] Will Rogue want to be put in a position where now he must do this because of the pressures from the community, eventhough they are positive :) I guess he needs to make a decision with Hyperion on that...

2] If it is positive, I would like to donate toward this cause, but I would need more clarity on this on whether it would actually get done or not... I am a firm believer that with the small footprint of AmigaOS, it would work well on a PS3, however if I wanted to play Amiga specific games that required GPU acceleration it wouldn't be effective. It may be possible to some degree with highly optimised software rendering techniques but I think memory limitations and the like could still pose alot of limitations... we really do need a "free" and "open" hardware platform without restrictions, that is more powerful than the current SAM boards and finally, after all these long long years, the memory bandwidth to do some amazing things graphically

...Natami has promise, but I can't say how expandable it will be in the future. With a CELL processor board expansion, OS4 could run on it too I assume... maybe that is our "PS3" in the waiting...

3] It would be nice also to get an idea of ACube's plans... what have they got in the pipeline for SAM. Could they not look at a SAM CELL board with an RSX or similar GPU with a decent amount of memory so that finally an AMIGAOS can really really fly and rise again... it so deserves it now... it is not that it can't fly now... it is... but like everything there has always been... AMIGA IS GREAT... BUT ...we have this hardware problem, this restrictions, this and that... when can we see and read... THE AMIGA IS GREAT ...and there are NO ISSUES to complain about...

So limitations of the 3D-performance is not a valid concern for a port of AmigaOS4.1

A PS3 can currently be bought for 350 Euros at Media Markt, this unlike for the US includes taxes. Media Markt stores are all over Europe, so shipping costs may not be needed.

Actually I think it's a great thing to have AmigaOS 4.1 on PS3.

Will it use the machine to it's fullest?! I don't think so. Sony policy is to provide some rings and bells for some "geeks" but it's fully aimed to the software buyer - gamers!

R.J. Mical may shed some lights on how to get the AmigaOS 4.1 running better than other offers - so far i've seen some linux distros, but they lack in fundamental areas for the common user - but he won't give full access to the HW.

But PS3 AmigaOS 4.1 will not sell more PS3's - it's the other way around. And besides, with a crippled machine (even if it had full access it would only have 256 mb), it opens more space for dedicated hardware for AmigaOS, like SAM.
It's just a way of promoting the Amiga brand and it's OS.

It's a way of saying "we're back and we're alive"... No we are not p*ssed!... I think every1 is getting a little more happier with recent news...

Actually, I am using a PS3 and i have installed Linux xubuntu on it. For me, it works nicely.
Ok, I'm not using linux to play games (here, I use my Amiga or PS3 ), so I can't say how well
Linux games could perform, but for work, like writing documents with openoffice, browsing the
internet with opera, programming etc, it simply works perfekt at FULL HD RESOLUTION (1920x1080p).
The PS3-Framebuffer, which only can be used by a guest OS for graphical output,
seems to be fast enough.

I even installed e-uae on Linux-PS3, but this is unfortunately to slow to use. I don't think because of
the gfx issue, but due to the missing JIT for powerpc.

I definitely would like to see AmigaOS4 on my PS3

What RJ would benefit from this pestering? I mean, he is a professional who charges for his time and help. Amiga was not his only pet project, he also worked on 3DO and many other. He even likes 3DO better, "Amiga done right" in his own words.

I can already hear RJ asking "where is the chipset emulation"...
