hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Amiga Seeding the Success Campaign from DiscreetFX Rogue's PS3 Instant Bounty
posted by DiscreetFX on 25-Sep-2008 3:45:34 (15208 reads)
Chicago, Illinois – September 24th, 2008 - For Immediate Release

Amiga Seeding the Success Campaign from DiscreetFX

This months Seeding the Success Campaign is going to be a little different. The winner is Rogue from Hyperion Entertainment for all his hard work on Amiga OS 4.1. He will of course get $100 but instead of Paypaling money we have set-up a Instant Bounty for him to receive a Sony PS3. We read with great interest in the recent Ars Technica interview that a port of Amiga OS 4.1 to PS3 had been seriously considered. We then read with sadness a comment from Rogue on aw.net that he did not have a PS3 and could not experiment on doing a port without one.

So getting Rogue a PS3 is the focus of Amiga Seeding the Success this month, We need your help though since Sony's PS3 is $399 plus tax and shipping and we have contributed only $100 of that. Once the goal of $399 plus shipping/tax is reached we will close this Instant Bounty and purchase/ship a PS3 to the address Rogue provides us. We expect this to be a fast and easy bounty so one of the lead OS 4.1 developers can have a PS3 in his possession quickly. Please watch for the following URL to be on-line in the next 3-4 hours for donations to this Bounty.

RoguePS3

DiscreetFX has always strongly believed in OS 4.0/4.1 for the PS3 and has mentioned that to Hyperion many times. Hopefully this Bounty effort with your help can bring us one step closer to making it happen . The PS3 is already very Amiga like and even has one of the creators of the Amiga working on it (R J Mical). Sony's PS3 has millions of owners, many of which used to own an Amiga. Amiga OS 4.1 on PS3 would help expand and re-legitimize the Amiga brand, even if you own a SAM440, AmigaOne or mystery OS 4.1 box. More ways to run OS 4.1 will benefit users and developers. DiscreetFX believes in doing what it can to help make modern Amiga & Amiga like systems successful.

Best regards

- DiscreetFX Team

If Amiga4.x is able to run this well on the PS3 or better I and probably many others will buy it:

PS3 YDL6 running Quake 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5hR32lcrYM

They can add a notice explaining they aren't using the PS3 optimally, not using the RSX directly nor taking advantage of the 6 super fast SPE processors available to 3rd party OS developers.

They can add videos of AmigaOS4.x running on the classics, AmigaOne hardware and Sam440 hardware to show how well AmigaOS4 is able to perform on other hardware.

@DiscreetFX

While I do appreciate your enthusiasm I feel that your actions are highly unprofessional. Especially for a company that has the ambition to be a leader in the Amiga field; remember you were talking about buying A Inc in a public forum!

You are putting pressure on an employee, not a manager, of Hyperion with this action and giving people false hopes. You're doing more damage than good this way, I fear.

If you really want to make a difference use smart diplomacy and contact people directly instead of blasting out on public fora. Also in corporate money a donation of $100,- is very little. I don't want to be offensive but people get more when they ask for compensation for travel costs when travelling to appointments in the company I work for. If someone wants to be taken seriously to invest in something you need bigger R&D budgets... My estimations would be in the tens of thousands; at least enough to pay for year salaries for multiple people. If you want good people to work for you you need hundreds of thousands. It's sad but true.

DukeNukem3D on PS3:

Turrican (Amiga) running emulated (E-UAE) on PS3 Linux:

Of course I will mostly be playing games like Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and God of War 3 instead. No native AmigaOS4 3D driver is going to change that.

But if you still not believe me, argue also against Rogue:

Note that I am arguing not form experience but from what I heard. I don't really have any reason to doubt these people, but still, I am *not* arguing from first-hand knowledge. I simply never saw Linux on the PS 3.

Let me re-state that the decision about what hardware to support is Hyperion's and not mine, and that it is extremely unlikely (bordering impossible) that Hyperion will change their minds about a PS 3 port. Whether I have a PS 3 or not will not make a difference in that. It will 99.9% likely NOT happen.

I cannot stress this point enough.

I also do not think it likely that Sony will lift the restrictions. And I don't even know RJ Mical personally, not did I ever have contact with him, so there is no way to "slip in" there either.

And even IF Sony would lift the restrictions, it is unlikely that enough documentation about the graphics chip even exists, or would be forthcoming from nVidia, to actually support it.

Really, I don't want to appear ungrateful or anything like that, I appreciate the fact that it's up to $360 in a mere two days, but I don't want you to have false hopes. My current workload will very likely not allow me to do much in this respect anyway.

I really hope everybody understands this. I am sorry to disappoint you.

Everyone the totals have not been updated yet but this Instant Bounty has been achieved in record time! Now the question is do we keep it going so Rogue's brother can also have a PS3? We would not want him to get jealous of Rogue's PS3.

In all seriousness it would probably be best if both of the Frieden Brothers had a PS3.

Rogue don't you think it's about time you have a few e-mail chats with RJ?

http://www.mical.org/

He might love talking with you, he is a very nice guy.

Mike Bouma's videos show that PS3 can show stuff full screen thanks to SPEs despiting the fact that video is not hardware accelerated.

There are also videos showing Linux PS3 playing fullscreen HDTV videos (1920x1080) using the SPEs so I'm sure that writting some SPE code it would be possible to write decent 2D/3D drivers that perform nicely, probably better than current PPC machines in some aspects.

Xubuntu Linux on PS3 perfoms faster (in terms of GFX- & especially in CPU-Tasks) then OS4 on A4000PPC with Mediator and Voodoo4500 . Desktop handling of PS3-Linux is responsive & quick. Movies can be playbacked which my A4000 never would be able to play and the PS3/Linux can even scale it up to FULL HD resolution.

So, speed is NOT the point in not porting AOS4 to PS3.

greetings,
nexus

Judging from the news here:
http://www.tehskeen.com/modules/skeenew/index.php
the door will be open soon for homebrew on the PS3 (it's already wide open on the Wii)...

Also on that page, a Wii homebrew port of Paradroid has been released.
As OS4.1 works on 64MB Amigas...there shouldn't be much of an issue with it running on a 88MB Wii with full open access to the hardware (which happens to be faster than SAM)...

Oh, SDL is already ported for the Wii, those there is one less thing that needs to be done...among many other things that are already done...

My thoughts are that BOTH should be done. Since the PS3 lacks access to the gpu, it should/could be used as a server machine as it has a 3.2GHz core... Clients (SAM, A1, Wii) could access it on a network. Applications would be LAN-based games, web-based apps (PS3 being the webserver), etc... Is there a MySQL port for Amiga OS4.x yet?

One of the things that would make more usable for business is an ODBC client port. Is this on the cards?

This is about as useful as trying to turn an ice-cream truck into an armored personnel carrier.

Srsly, if the lot of you and DiscreetFX really want to buy HJF a neat toy to try out developing AmigaOS on, buy him a Cell reference motherboard from Toshiba, not this junk.

@Lou

Have you ever tried to run OS4 with 64MB? You run out of ram almost instantly. 96MB is definitely not enough. IMHO the minimum to do useful stuff is 128MB.

BTW, AmigaOS is not a server OS. Linux does that task very well.

What constitutes a "server OS"? Any box can be a server if it is running software that "serves" clients. If it's running Apache w/php and MySQL, it's a server machine. If it's acting as a firewall and providing DHCP to clients, it's a server.

You missed my point of the Wii being a 'client'. An A1, Wii or PPC'd classic could easily act as a point-of-sale or data-entry system that connects to a PS3 with a massive harddrive running MySQL...

I'm a VB.net developer for a business, so you are not seeing all the "business" applications that can be done with client/server based environments.
