hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Amiga Seeding the Success Campaign from DiscreetFX Rogue's PS3 Instant Bounty
   posted by DiscreetFX on 25-Sep-2008 3:45:34 (15835 reads)
Chicago, Illinois – September 24th, 2008 - For Immediate Release

Amiga Seeding the Success Campaign from DiscreetFX

This months Seeding the Success Campaign is going to be a little different. The winner is Rogue from Hyperion Entertainment for all his hard work on Amiga OS 4.1. He will of course get $100 but instead of Paypaling money we have set-up a Instant Bounty for him to receive a Sony PS3. We read with great interest in the recent Ars Technica interview that a port of Amiga OS 4.1 to PS3 had been seriously considered. We then read with sadness a comment from Rogue on aw.net that he did not have a PS3 and could not experiment on doing a port without one.
(Read more)

So getting Rogue a PS3 is the focus of Amiga Seeding the Success this month, We need your help though since Sony's PS3 is $399 plus tax and shipping and we have contributed only $100 of that. Once the goal of $399 plus shipping/tax is reached we will close this Instant Bounty and purchase/ship a PS3 to the address Rogue provides us. We expect this to be a fast and easy bounty so one of the lead OS 4.1 developers can have a PS3 in his possession quickly. Please watch for the following URL to be on-line in the next 3-4 hours for donations to this Bounty.

RoguePS3

DiscreetFX has always strongly believed in OS 4.0/4.1 for the PS3 and has mentioned that to Hyperion many times. Hopefully this Bounty effort with your help can bring us one step closer to making it happen . The PS3 is already very Amiga like and even has one of the creators of the Amiga working on it (R J Mical). Sony's PS3 has millions of owners, many of which used to own an Amiga. Amiga OS 4.1 on PS3 would help expand and re-legitimize the Amiga brand, even if you own a SAM440, AmigaOne or mystery OS 4.1 box. More ways to run OS 4.1 will benefit users and developers. DiscreetFX believes in doing what it can to help make modern Amiga & Amiga like systems successful.

Best regards

- DiscreetFX Team

@Zorro

If the brothers only wanted to play games all day they have had many options to do that for many years. I think it is their dream to create an updated exciting version of Amiga OS and they have done that.

Did this actually come out. I can only find old articles stating that it will be coming out in 2006.

The only CELL related stuff I can find on the Toshiba microelectronics site is about SpursEngine which contains 4 SPEs from the CELL processor and no PPC.

Xubuntu Linux on PS3 perfoms faster (in terms of GFX- & especially in CPU-Tasks) then OS4 on A4000PPC with Mediator and Voodoo4500.

You dont even need the speed of a SAM-Board to be a faster than that...

Desktop handling of PS3-Linux is responsive & quick.

???
Desktop handling on my PS3 is very sluggish.

So, speed is NOT the point in not porting AOS4 to PS3.

I think it is a point in not porting AOS4.

@DiscreetFX

"Plus Taxes/shipping"

Wouldn't it be smarter to order the PS3's where the Brothers live, no need to pay taxes or shipping (most places got free shipping).

Get the Adress of Rogue and check the prices of a PS3 where he live, sure it would be cheaper and less risky than shipping overseas.

Good luck with the project. Even if there's only a slight chance we will see OS4 on PS3 I think it's a good bounty project.

@DiscreetFX

Yes, we all know (hope ? ) it...

And, if it wasn't clear (from the smileys), it was only a joke... I really love the Frieden's and the AmigaOS Dev Team work...

Since I've been added to the list of PS3 recipients as well, let me re-iterate what Rogue said:

Sending me hardware will not make OS4 happen on it. This is regardless of whether it's a PS3, a MacMini or other hardware. Neither me nor Rogue are in any position to decide on hardware support.

Again, sorry to disappoint you, but it doesn't work that way.

Right... sorry to have to jump in and be the Bad Cop here, but needs must.

When you asked me to approve this News Announcement, DiscreetFX, I was under the impression (wrongly) that this had been cleared with Rogue, at least in theory. I was wrong in my assumption. I would like to publicly apologise to Rogue for not checking more thoroughly, I thought it was a great idea and a great way to avail a PS3 to someone who could get the best use from it from a coding standpoint.

Rogue and EntilZha have posted time and again that sending them free PS3s Will NOT Have Any Effect Whatsoever Towards a Porting Solution. Yet, the people in this thread are turning a blind eye to their responses.

How do you think this must make them feel?

So. Here we now have a lot of money donated freely by people under rather a false impression that something would come of their cash. And... nothing will happen from the money collected save sending a game console each to two people who would rather not have them, frankly, since there is an implied condition attached. And regardless of what anyone says here on in, there will ALWAYS be an implied condition upon receipt.

Can we all just stop this now and try to salvage the Good Will that has been displayed so far from so many people?

Is there a way to send the donations back to the people who have sent them?

They don't want to do the work or rather they can't because of contracts.
The idea remains good even if the means are ridiculous,a ps3 Sdk means at least 10000 $.For such sum you have the means to work.

But as i wrote already,Linux is available on Ps3 and this works on Linux:
rocklyte

The bid is unsufficient since the start because discreet fx hasn't the money and Hyperion hasn't the skills(the os was supposed to be delivered between 2002 and 2003).

@Yo

Thanks, that is exactly how I feel about this. I really wish that I had been asked beforehand.

@rogue
i am talking about the result.
We are in 2008
You agreed with Amiga inc,eyetech, in 2001 if am right.
A donation of a ps3 does'nt allow to port anything without the needed tools.

On the other hand,Morphos is borrowing elements from Linux(cube,etc..)so i am about to expect .If not one side,the other one.

Agreed what? I don't think that a PS 3 was available in 2001.

Are you trying to make some point? Because I seem to totally miss it.

You made me giggle there...

Well, in any event, I filed for a refund via PayPal seeing that my donation will not be put to good use. If DescreetFX is worth his salt, he will follow up with the refund ASAP.

EDIT: Juts received my PayPal credit last night. Thanks DiscreetFX for your prompt response!

Just checked my PayPal account - no refund.
Okay, I did not file for one as it should not be necessary anymore at this point.

And the donations page hasn't seen any update in weeks now.

So - what now?

Have all the bounty amounts been returned, now, to the donators?
