Software News   Software News : AmiCygnix V1.0 released
   posted by CygnusEd on 20-Dec-2008 23:37:22 (8255 reads)
On OS4-Depot is the final version of AmiCygnix for AmigaOS4 available. AmiCygnix is a Unix environment, which makes it possible, to port unix software easily. AmiCygnix replaces the prereleases of Cygnix.

The software published for Cygnix will not work with AmiCygnix anymore! These packages will be rereleased step by step. The packages of AbiWord 2.6.2 and Gnumeric 1.6.3 will be published first.

The base installation is now separated into two packages:

A basic package, which contains all necessary things to install and run AmiCygnix applications. Important news:

* Complete new desktop.
* New display drivers. One of them can open the desktop in a window on the workbench.
* Mousewheel support.
* Completely recompiled for Newlib.
* Support for amiga clipboard.
* Better stability by avoiding the typical unix assigns (e.g. USR:) and saving the environmant variables into an own subdirectoy.

A second tools package contains following software:

* The filemanager ROX-Filer 2.9
* The webbrowser NetSurf 1.2
* The editor Leafpad 0.8.12 with UTF-8 support
* The picture viewer GPicView 0.1.9
* The PDF viewer Xpdf 3.02
* The GTK2 prefs editor LXAppearance 0.2
* The window manager prefs editor ObConf 2.0.3
* ...

On just a quick first test it looks a lot more stable than the older releases. Good job!

Only the 1st link works.
Launches a hell of a lot quicker.
Nice work.

hello

The first reason for ordering a SAM is AOS4.1
The second reason is AmiCygnix !!!!
The third reason is to use also linux on a same machine.

Reason 2 and 3 are for also use software not actually on the AOS4.x side (but soon I know

Thanks a lot for Amicygnix !!!

Worked first time, for both packages once I read about the tools package being in the uploads section still.

Much better than the last version, very nice package indeed. A lot of UNIX programs can be used on Cygnix once ported then I heard.

This should assist the Amiga community, while Amiga Native compiles and ports are done, also.

Thanks You Very Much... You are clever people.

Is it possible to have the old Cygnix & the new AmiCygnix installed & working at the same? It seems a shame to loose AbiWord/etc until they are re-released.

@ ChrisH

Why bother mate? On SAM at least the previous environment was so slow, which was impossible to work with. I don't know about the new version though.

It works great. Although I had a few freezes, but it seems mostly stable. In fact, I'm posting this from NetSurf, AmiCygnix version.

I hope that there is hope for keyboard layout changing, so that when Abiword becomes available, I can write in Greek and English at the same time.

Keep up the good work. Great new software,really...

I've not had any luck with amicygnix . First I could hardly install it, it crashed when I was about to select where to install it. I got a DSI error and when I choosed to ignore it it wouldn't continue the installation. So I selected "beginner" and then it installed to Work: . Now I can't run it since it freez when starting. I get a shell windows and it opens a new screen and then it freez .

i got this dsi too when i wanted to list volumes. i had to manually type in the partition name.
and then i read about it not working on jxfs partitions, which is the only kind i've got. bummer.
i am making room for another partition now.

@hotrod & SpotUp

me too got irrecoverable DSI when trying to change dest dir for installing so I've to keep "Work:" as instal volume...
Now posting from NetSurf1.2 on AmyCigniX

The only prob was that the gfx refresh wasnt so high... like old install but now was really nice to use and well configured
Hope that gfx speed can be improved a bit in future...

GOOD WORK!!!!!!!!!

Now I'm waiting for Gnumeric/AbiWord/GQView and TheGIMP

Cya!

Hi,

sorry for the problems. I can confirm, that AmiCygnix does not work on JXFS partitions. It was also mentioned in the info window at the beginning of the installation process.

If the installation process crashes, please check your installer binary! I was told, that there are problems with older ones!

Also there could be problems with the clonewb driver on OS 4.1. Sometimes the system freezes, when you switch the screen. Please try to use an other driver!

Have fun!

CygnusEd

BTW: AbiWord and Gnumeric will follow soon

@Tuxedo

Don't know - maybe. I will upload the complete sources now - including the sources of the server. Maybe someone else will have a look at this. My knowledge is limited in this case, but I think this is the only chance to make the server faster. Let's see
