Software News   Software News : AmiCygnix V1.0 released
   posted by CygnusEd on 20-Dec-2008 23:37:22 (7675 reads)
On OS4-Depot is the final version of AmiCygnix for AmigaOS4 available. AmiCygnix is a Unix environment, which makes it possible, to port unix software easily. AmiCygnix replaces the prereleases of Cygnix.

The software published for Cygnix will not work with AmiCygnix anymore! These packages will be rereleased step by step. The packages of AbiWord 2.6.2 and Gnumeric 1.6.3 will be published first.

The base installation is now separated into two packages:

A basic package, which contains all necessary things to install and run AmiCygnix applications. Important news:

* Complete new desktop.
* New display drivers. One of them can open the desktop in a window on the workbench.
* Mousewheel support.
* Completely recompiled for Newlib.
* Support for amiga clipboard.
* Better stability by avoiding the typical unix assigns (e.g. USR:) and saving the environmant variables into an own subdirectoy.

A second tools package contains following software:

* The filemanager ROX-Filer 2.9
* The webbrowser NetSurf 1.2
* The editor Leafpad 0.8.12 with UTF-8 support
* The picture viewer GPicView 0.1.9
* The PDF viewer Xpdf 3.02
* The GTK2 prefs editor LXAppearance 0.2
* The window manager prefs editor ObConf 2.0.3
* ...

@broadblues:

disable the keyboard extension, I modified the launch script (added -"kb"):

12.AOS4.1:> grep -n kb Cygnix:s/Start_XGeek.bat
20: Run >NIL: \NIL: Cygnix:CygnixPPC/X11R6.3/bin/XGeekPPC :{DISPLAYNUM} -kb -pri 0 -screen CyberGraphX@800x600x16
23: Run >NIL: \NIL: Cygnix:CygnixPPC/X11R6.3/bin/XGeekPPC :{DISPLAYNUM} -kb -pri 0 -screen `GetEnv Cygnix/CYGNIX_SCREEN_MODE`

Edit: "less than" in front oh second "NIL:"-s messed up things. Replaced by "\"

Thanks for that. Adding '-kb' seesm to allow Firefox to connect to the XServer.

seems very slow thoug, much slower that connecting to an Xserver running under Debian linuxPPC on the same AmigaOne.

What factors could be affecting this? Any configuration options I could tweak?

@broadblues

I think that it boild to 2 things:
1. there's additional s/w layer between the server and the hardware in AmiCygnix

2. some extension that are present in linux are to speedup rendering and use some functionality directly implemented by at least some hardware drivers themselves (kernel modules)

extension loaded in AmiCygnix
BIG-REQUESTS
DOUBLE-BUFFER
LBX
MIT-SHM
MIT-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD
RECORD
SECURITY
SHAPE
SYNC
XC-APPGROUP
XC-MISC
XIE
XTEST

in debian x86 (pretty much up2date):
BIG-REQUESTS
Composite
DAMAGE
DOUBLE-BUFFER
DPMS
Extended-Visual-Information
GLX
MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
MIT-SHM
MIT-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD
RANDR
RECORD
RENDER
SECURITY
SGI-GLX
SHAPE
SYNC
TOG-CUP
X-Resource
XAccessControlExtension
XC-APPGROUP
XC-MISC
XFIXES
XFree86-Bigfont
XFree86-DGA
XFree86-DRI
XFree86-Misc
XFree86-VidModeExtension
XINERAMA
XInputExtension
XKEYBOARD
XTEST
XVideo

I guess at least one from DAMAGE/RANDR/RENDER is related.
Will try dig some info on them.

Jack
