Software News   Software News : Sputnik for AmigaOS bounty canceled - further info
   posted by ssolie on 27-Dec-2008 15:51:35 (10640 reads)
Posting 1:
Due to lack of communication, slow development and broken deadlines I am sorry to inform you that the Sputnik bounty has been canceled. (Read more)

Posting 2:
With the recent announcement that the Sputnik bounty is canceled I feel that it is of great importance we support those browser projects that is actively developed for AmigaOS4. Amigabounty was not created with the intention to focus on existing projects but when we are talking browsers I would like to point you to two (very) active developers that deserves all the praise they can get.

Chris Young is porting the CSS capable browser NetSurf. Visit Unsatisfactory Software to read more about NetSurf and download the latest release.

Jörg Strohmayer is porting OWB to AmigaOS4 and it can be downloaded from the OWB website.
OWB is also CSS capable and based on the well known Webkit rendering engine used by companies such as Nokia, Google and apple.

Both browsers are looking really promising and I hope every AmigaOS4 user remember to thank those doing something for the platform. I am also sure that a donation is more than welcome, take a look at the respective websites to find the donate buttons, or at least keep them in mind for when you get money from the Sputnik bounty returned.

Posting 3:
How to get your money back.

All money from the closed Sputnik bounty will be returned to the people who so kindly donated. I just have to ask that all people who donated send me an email with their name and Paypal address(email).

Many people stated that they wanted to donate their money to other OS4 developers, if you want me to do that (to avoid further paypal fees) remember to say so (and to which project) in your email. I hope many people choose to support the actively developed OS4 applications.

Please send me the email before 31.01.2009 so I can get the money back to all of you (or to other OS4 projects) ASAP. If I haven't received any email by the end of January 2009 I will donate your money to the developers of the OS4 version of either NetSurf or OWB.

Sorry for the trouble this caused.
My email is tersking(at)gmail.com

Mod edit, here is the text from the news item posted by Petah, deleted that one due to this item having more comments, we missed that this news item was already submitted, apologies for any inconvenience /tomazkid

A copy of the text from the news item submitted by Petah as follows:

Quote:

In a brief but shocking note, bounty manager Troels Ersking at AmigaBounty.net recently announced that the infamous Sputnik web browser bounty has been pulled back. Ersking states that the any further development efforts are unrealistic, and that the previous deadlines has been broken. On top of that, Ersking suggests that there would not have been a finished AmigaOS version of Sputnik in a foreseeable future. (Read more)

The Sputnik bounty was originally set up on February 14th 2007, raising a grand total of ¤3124.72 from AmigaOS users across the world. The bounty stated that a first working version should be released in the beginning of 2008. The bounty, minus service fees, will be repaid to all donors via the PayPal transaction service "as soon as possible".

It is currently unknown whether of not author of the closed source Sputnik web browser will continue developments for the foreign operating system it is currently targeted at. The statement doesn't specify whether or not the Sputnik developer will keep the AmigaOne computer that was sent to him for porting purposes.

I'd love to see some of the funds transfered where it would do some good if those who donated were willing.

My idea was to help out the man from NZ working on the graphics drivers. We need to get all or as many of the graphics features upgraded.

Need to look for posts on AW for more info......

That's a real shame. I was looking forward to Sputnik on OS4.

WARNING.... I totally reject the notion of canceling bounties.

1st time it happens, it leads to the likelihood of it happening to other bounties.

Each time it happens, it builds up fear in the community. Possible bounty hunters think 10x longer when they know, there is a bad history / reputation of cancellations.

I would encourage those who value the fair Terms / Conditions of bounties, to place your money back into the Sputnik project, via an escrow service or another Bounty site.

@meet.mrmrg

Whilst I don't like cancelling bounties either, the Sputnik bounty had a deadline after which the money would be refunded to donors if the port wasn't done. This deadline expired ages ago. Therefore this cancellation is not unexpected, and is fair.

Hans

This sounds good to me also.

But if you don't ask for your money back it will go to either OWB or NetSuft. This is good for my money donated.

You guys can just email me and I will return your money. Or if you want me to I can send it to any other OS4 developer if you provide me with the right Paypal address.

I will of course make a list of what went where, so everyone can see what happened to their money. But the best would be if I send the money ahead so we could avoid further paypal fees.

This is good news.
I'm impressed that you are doing the work to make full accounting for both the programmers and financial contributors.
Removing this bounty allows us to focus our resources, and we are spread way too thin across everyone's wish list of applications.
At minimum, we only need one great web browser and we already have 3 good ones released and in continued development.

The AmigaOne that was provided for this project either needs to be returned or used towards another software project. Who has it?

That's why my idea to transfer some of the funds for your work Hans is a great idea!

Do you still have need of a lcd screen for HD drivers etc?

I didn't donate to the Sputnik bounty but just today I donated to Netsurf and a couple of days ago donated to OWB.

I think it's important we have 2 CSS capable webbrowsers to choose from and since Firefox wasn't and isn't going anywhere I thought that would be a good idea.

I have a suitable LCD screen now which was partially paid for with donations (so thank you to everyone who donated so far), but donations are always gratefully accepted.

@meet.mrnrg
As someone else said, the deadline for the bounty has long-ago expired (nearly 1 year), with almost no communication from the developer. This seems pretty fair, if sad news.

IMHO this is *good news*, because it will encourage users to donate to bounties again, rather than feel burned & never do it again. It is also good for developers, because it encourages them to agree to realistic deadlines BEFORE agreeing to the bounty, and keep them motivated once they have agreed (rather than letting it slide when RL proves troublesome).

IMHO this cancelling of the bounty is something that the author of Sputnik should have done himself, since he is obviously unable to meet the conditions of the bounty.

So, let's forget Sputnik and put the money in OWB and Netsurf...
The goal, should be a browser with:

- full CSS support
- full Javascript support
- Flash support (and this is the biggest problem: let's put money for it...)

@ALL

If you donated to the Sputnik bounty please read this.

As I will be away all of January I hope many of you decide what I should do with your donation ASAP.

If I haven't got an email on Tuesday it won't be processed until the beginning of February, as I probably won't have internet access where I'm staying in January.

@Troels

It's a real shame to hear about the cancellation of a bounty, even more when it's for such an important piece of software for OS4 like a modern web browser, but I must say that even if I was really wanting it, I never saw Marcik too motivated, to be fair.

Anyway, while waiting for it, some other motivated and pro-OS4 programmers have developed some very good alternatives, being OWB from Jörg Strohmayer my favourite, so transfer the money I donated for Sputnik to his account. Thanks.

I'll send you an email, but I want this to be publicly known.

Saluditos,

Ferrán.

Edit: I'll send the email ASAP since my flat is being completely refurbished, I'm on a temporary house and my A1 is on a box...

I'd rather have a 'bounty' fro the guys behind IBrowse.
Lets get full java, CSS and flash for THAT ! Otherwise it's an excelent browser. Even without being OS4 native. Imagine it also being OS4 native...

my 2cts....

btw, where's version 3 ??

Sad to hear anyway,
If somehow MOS - OS4 converting could be made easier or emualtion made possibile
by a extra layer with benefit of both OSes (eventualy evolving to real OS 5).

However, it would be good if you could decide to support some really promising Amiga Bounty

LIke Java

Or Flash Player
